5 Feelin’ blue(in a good way)

Explore the possibilities of a signature color

by Cathy Jakicic

These crystals are a new shade, denim blue.

1necklace • On a head pin, string a 4 mm pearl. Make a

plain loop (Basics). Make the following bead units: 10 to 12 12 mm pearl units, six to eight 5 mm pearl units, 20 to 24 4 mm pearl units, six to eight 8 mm round crystal units, one or two rondelle units, three to five 6 mm round crystal units, three to five 6 mm bicone crystal units.

3Cut two 8–10-in. (20–25 cm) pieces of chain. Open a jump

ring (Basics). Attach the chains and the dangle. Close the jump ring. Attach two 12 mm pearl units to the jump ring.

2 Cut a 23⁄4-in. (7 cm) piece of chain. Open the loop of a

4 mm pearl unit (Basics). Attach the bottom link and close the loop. Attach 12 to 14 bead units with larger beads at the top of the chain.

4On each end, starting near the center dangle, attach 12 to 17

bead units in descending size (Tip). Skip a few more links, then attach the last bead units. On one end, use a jump ring to attach a lobster claw clasp. Attach a jump ring to the other end.

Feelin’ blue(in a good way)

For this Y-necklace and matching earrings, I dove deep into the blue pool, but you can also add colors and create variations to stretch your color and design muscles.

“This color always makes me feel like I’m at my best.”

1earrings • For each earring: Cut a 1-in. (2.5 cm) piece of chain.

Following necklace step 1, make one 12 mm pearl unit, one 8 mm round crystal unit, one 6 mm pearl unit, and two 4 mm pearl units. Open the loop of the 12 mm pearl unit and a 4 mm pearl unit (Basics,). Attach each to an end link and close the loop. Attach the remaining bead units close to the 12 mm pearl.

2Open the loop of an earring wire. Attach the loop of the

12 mm pearl unit and close the loop.

1bracelet • Follow necklace step 1 to make eight 12 mm pearl

units. Use heavy-duty wire cutters to cut a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece of memory wire. Use roundnose pliers to make a loop on one end. String a 12 mm pearl, then an alternating pattern of six 4–5 mm pearls and five pearl units. String a 12 mm pearl. Make a loop.

2 Using two pairs of pliers to open links as you would a jump ring

(Basics), separate a 2-in. (5 cm) and a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece of chain. Open an end link of each chain and attach a loop of the beaded section. Close the links.

3 Attach a lobster claw clasp and the end link of the shorter chain.

Attach a pearl unit and the end link of the longer chain.

Cathy JakicicBefore her blue period, Cathy was all about purple. Maybe it’s because purple is associated with a sense of magic, creativity, and eccentricity, and blue represents peace, trust, and dependability. While she hopes she still has some purple in her, her blue qualities are deepening with time.

TipThe bead spacing on

either side of the necklace doesn’t have to be a mirror

image; just make sure to evenly distribute the

visual “weight” of the beads.
