• Recovery of the Capelin ?:• Management plan in two steps

• first step in this plan is to set a preliminary TAC

• The second step is based on the results of another survey conducted during the fishing season for the same year classes.

• The fishable capelin stock has been at a low level during the last five seasons

• MRI have been able to measure immature capelin of the 2009 and 2010 year classes enough to recommend a preliminary quota

• Recovery of the Capelin ?:

• ICES workshop was unable to approve the assessment of the Icelandic capelin stock

• Revision of the factor for natural mortality.

• Work is now ongoing and is supposed to be concluded before early June

• Changes in the Fishery Management System

• government is preparing a proposal for changes

• changes will include changes in the allocation of quotas

• quotas will be allocated to limited pre-determined time

• allocation only include the right to use the quota

• in the future part of the quotas will progressively go into pots

• No changes will be of the methods used to determine fishing quotas.

• Best scientific methods will still be used to determine the size of the fishable stock.

• not expecting these changes to have much affects on the fishmeal industry

• Green Industry

• The fishmeal industry in Iceland is heading to be green

• 43 % of the energy used by the Icelandic fishmeal factories came from renewable energy in 2011

• One Icelandic fishmeal plant is 100 % driven by renewable energy.

• In 3-4 years about 80% of fishmeal and fish oil will be produced with renewable energy.

• IFFO RS certification

• 7 factories have been certified and two are pending

• Summer spawning herring, Atlanto spring spawning herring, Blue whiting and Capelin have been certified

• 7 byproducts have been certified

• 85 % of fishmeal and fish oil produced in Iceland will be IFFO RS certified.
