1. In what ways does your media product

use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real

media products?2

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I have looked at a variety of magazines from a similar genre for my inspiration that could be aimed at a niche market such as The Fly and DIY magazine as well as mass market magazines such as NME and Q, each take a different approach on how their content is laid out.

3

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I think it is clear that I have based my magazine on the style of NME especially on the content page as I have used a similar layout as I found it aesthetically pleasing and convenient as the sections are clear to follow. I have chosen this magazine as it is has the simple design of a niche magazine but with more content.

2. How does your media product

represent particular social groups?

5

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I believe that gender is represented in my magazine in an equal, non-stereotypical way. Both genders are shown and there are artists such as “Stone Cold” who has the tough persona shown through her careless expression and dark clothing and leather jacket which has connotations of ruthlessness which is not usually associated with female artists. I have also represented the more traditional idea of female artists through “The Things” which could be shown through their clothing and poses.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Neither of these girl bands conform to gender such as girls being a passive voice as through the pull quotes I have shown the artists to have very strong opinions on the topic and an air of confidence with what they say.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute

your media product and why?

8

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Major distributors such as Bauer and Time inc. are responsible for making kerrang and NME. Niche magazines that I have looked at are created by an independent company called Mama&Company.

9

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Either of these distributors would fit my magazine as its target audience would most likely be interested in the artists present. I believe that my magazine would be something that a major company would produce as I have decided to choose Mama&Company as my magazine would have content which would be aimed at more of a niche market.

4. Who would be the

audience for your media product?

11

Who would be the audience for your media product?

I have tried to represent the age range of my target audience by making my artists around that age group such as Meg Rowl whom is 29. This is important as the audience may lose interest if they find a magazine is too young or old for their range so by making the artists within the age group of the target audience the magazine is relatable.Including existing artists such as Miles Kane, Hozier and Jake Bugg within my magazine would also work as they are both popular artists within the genre.

12

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

13

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

I think that by choosing the colour scheme that I have, a wider audience is catered for as there are no gendered colours within the scheme. The headlines used also attracts my audience as the headlines would not be suitable for a younger audience and an older audience would not usually be interested in such things anymore. I believe that my headlines would be suitable for my 13-39 year old audience as they relate to the extreme side of youth culture.

14

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

I think the masthead that i have previously created would be seen as childish which is why i changed it to a much more formal look with a font similar to that of Q which still appeals to the target audience.

15

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

The cover lines revealing exclusive articles using triples and repetition creating rhyme would appeal to the magazine's target audience as it brings the feature to life and makes it appear exciting.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of

constructing the product?

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?

Whilst creating my magazines, I have come across a range of programmes which have helped with the process.

Blogger was an easy way to keep track of what I have done. Also easy to edit and delete posts and convenient as it meant that i did not have to waste my time looking through folders for papers. It was also better for me to use blogger as it was a way of seeing all my work without needing a lot of space. Organisation was easy as everything is dated and the posts could be edited any time so if i forgot to mention something previously I could always go back to it.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?

Programme Pros Cons

Paint.net Able to manipulate photos with ease and change round elements of my magazine. The layers mean that I could do that without affecting any of the other layers

While experimenting I found some of the tools such as the cut out tool were not as effective as the one on PagePlus. It was also almost impossible to wrap text around images with ease.

PagePlus Easier than paint.net to crop photos and wrap text around them. Layers helped with the editing process.

took a while to learn where everything was and what they did as it has a slightly complicated format

Publisher Simple software with a range of fonts and a variety of sizes and colours to change them to.

Did not have layers so I could not hide anything to focus on one element.

7. Looking back to your preliminary task, what

do you feel that you have learnt in the

progression from it to the full product?

7. Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to

the full product?

Since my preliminary task i have gained new skills and developed the ones I had beforehand. I understand elements of a magazine such as layout and features that help make a magazine look better.

7. Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to

the full product?

I have added additional photos and a colour scheme which helps make the magazine look more authentic and the text on the cover links in with the text on the contents page.

7. Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to

the full product?

I have also found how work with the background of the actual image and use it to my advantage. By using a blank wall I was able to incorporate it into my colour scheme and this also meant that I did not have to crop the artist out and put it on another background.Preliminary Front CoverPreliminary Contents Page 23

8. How successful do you feel your end

product is in fulfilling the task? How well does it fit the brief?

24

Overall I believe that the brief for my final result has been successful since through my research I have made a music magazine that will appeal to a certain audience and I have made a substantial amount of progress compared to the preliminary task. I am particularly happy with my contents page as it came out exactly as I wanted it to since the layout and colour all came out well. 25
