• Punjab shares a long and a shameful history of female foeticide

• Punjab has the ratio of 776 females to 1,000 males- the 2003 data sex ratio.


•Nawanshahar district in Punjab is a serious offender

•The district had a sex ratio of 808 females in 2001, which has fallen to 775 in 2004


• Out of the 477 villages in the Nawanshahar district,

•16 villages have a male-female sex ratio of 500-1000

•65 villages have a ratio of less than 700-1000
