What is Feng Shui?Feng Shui is a design system for

arranging your interior environment in balance and harmony with the natural world around you. The words mean “wind” and “water.” Feng Shui principles can be incorporated into the design of a spa to make clients feel more relaxed and staff more comfortable working in the space, which results in increased business success.

Understanding Feng ShuiChi is energy. It is the constantly moving and changing life force that

we feel around us making us feel either good or bad in a certain location. Chi can accumulate in the objects around you. In your home or office, the chi will flow in through the door and out through the windows. The goal of Feng Shui improvements (or "cures") is to keep the chi flowing gently throughout your environment rather than running straight through it. Chi can have a negative effect on your surroundings when it gets stuck or blocked.

Bringing it all together for your spaEntrance Door: Entrances represent how the world meets your spa and symbolize opportunities flowing onto your

business. The main door should be attractive, open easily, and nothing should be stored behind so it can open completely.

Reception: Place mirrors, a small water fountain, and a ceiling fan in the reception area to create flow and movement of

positive energy (and clients) into the space. Decoration for this area includes landscape artwork, lush plants, or an aquarium.

Waiting/Quiet Area: When using Feng Shui principles in the design of a spa, it is important to create a space with soft

edges so that nothing sharp or pointed is aimed at your clients. This translates into soft chairs and gentle lighting in a clutter-free waiting area, and plants placed in front on any harsh angles to soften them.

Colors: Colors for walls can make a huge impact on how clients experience your space and will ultimately contribute to

the success of your business. For both the waiting area and practice rooms, choose either soft “skin-tone” colors, or muted shades of green, which is the color is associated with growth, healing, and new energy. The administrative and office areas can be enhanced with the color red.

Practice Rooms: Whenever possible, position your client’s head so she/he can see the door, and avoid placing them

close to the room entrance. The most vulnerable position is lying with the feet facing directly out the door, which is considered the “death position” because it is the way coffins are carried out of the room in Asia. Placing the table at an angle and using a screen near the door can give your client a sense of comfort, privacy, and power.

Decoration and Art: Place a bowl of smooth polished river rocks in the reception area and in each treatment room to

encourage grounding. Stones connect us to the earth and represent stability. For inside rooms without windows, hang “landscape” art and images of nature as a connection to the natural growing world outside.

Plants: Choose full, bushy plants with rounded leaves whenever possible. Avoid cactus and any plants with spiky leaves.
