Retained by the US. Department of Energy (DOE), CUED is an organization comprised o f economic development practitioners from around the country. CUED's primary mission is to help communities, affected by DOE downsizing and site closures, develop and revitalize their local economies. DOE recently established the new Fernald Community Reuse Organization to serve as the Fernald communities' focal point on such issues as future land use planning of the Fernald Environmental Management Project (FEMP); disposition of excess facilities and equipment: and community transition and economic development opportunities for the surrounding communities following remediation of the FEMP.

During CUED's two-day visit, team members will gather participants' interpretation of the opportunities for, and obstacles to, successful economic development in our region; identify existing regional economic development programs; and determine whether additional regional economic development services are needed. Based on participants' feedback, the CUED team will then recommend to the Fernald Community Reuse Organization an overall strategy to promote regional economic development and community revitalization.

The t w o days have been organized into topic-specific, informal roundtable discussions between the CUED team and participants.
