Lesson Review and New Concepts of the Week:

We have learned that beat is steady like a heartbeat and rhythm works with beat to make music more interesPng. We also learned that tempo is how fast or slow the beat of the music is. In this lesson we will learn about form and dynamics.

Form is the pa<erns that the parts of the music make. When listening to, or looking at different pieces of music and trying to figure out the form, you will want to listen and look for two things: 1. SecPons that repeat. 2. SecPons that are different.

Dynamics is how loud or quiet the music is. Here is a chart that shows some of the words that musicians use to describe dynamics:

NoPce that the words in the second column are Italian words. Many music words are Italian. NoPce also that the le<ers in the first column are a shortened way to write the dynamics words. OLen there isn’t enough room in a piece of music to write the whole words, so we use these abbreviaPons.

We want you to be able to answer these quesPons:

• What is one example of musical form? • What are dynamics? • Can you perform Beach Speech and describe its form?

Songs for Singing and Making Music

Warm up your voice: Have someone in your family trace shapes on your back with their finger. When their finger goes up, make your singing voice go up. When their finger goes down, make your voice go down. Once your voice is warmed up, sing a song that you know. Try singing forte (loud) and piano (quiet). Be careful to never use a shouPng voice when you sing forte!
