An overview of fertilizer statistics in Ghana from 2012 –2015.
More emphasis is given to the year 2015 and each analysis is based on the products with higher quantities.
Official trade data obtained from Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and Validated by CountrySTAT Fertilizer Technical Working Group – Ghana (FTWG-GHA)
2015 data validated from the 23rd – 25th May, 2016.
Outline Background information
Fertilizer production
• There are no primary productions of fertilizers in Ghana.
• Three of the major importing companies; Yara Ghana, Chemico Limited and Louis Dreyfus Commodities Ghana are also involved in secondary production (blending) of fertilizer formulations, fully operational with varied capacities located in the port city of Tema and Kpong(LDC)
• A small percentage of organic fertilizer is also produced locally.
Fertilizer imports
Comments:
• Over the years, NPK’s with different formulations have been the most imported fertilizers in Ghana. In 2015, NPK’s accounted for 48% of all official fertilizer imports.
• The top 5 products imported for the past four years have been consistent. However, Urea imports in 2014 reduced because there was no fertilizer subsidy that year.
• Other fertilizers include about 7,500MT of Kieserite which is a source of magnesium in blended NPK with a large amount going to the cocoa fertilizer blends. Occasionally, Oil palm estates apply Kieserite directly to provide magnesium to their plantations.

Other fertilizers includes products like; DAP, Phosphate Rock, SOP, Calcium nitrate, etc

Comments:
• Some products can be used for both agricultural and industrial purposes depending on the importer.
• In Ghana, products like Ammonium nitrate which are imported are mostly used by the mining industries as explosives.

Comments:
• NPK’s are the most consumed fertilizers in Ghana (Accounting for 48% of Ghana’s fertilizer consumption in 2015)
• In 2015 total apparent consumption of fertilizers in nutrients were 106.6 with 48.6 N, 32.5 P2O5
and 25.5 K2O.
