I Was Glad When They Said Unto Me C. Hubert H. Parry

I was glad when they said unto me, “We will go into the house of the Lord.” Our feet shall stand in thy gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem is builded as a city that is at unity in itself. O pray for the peace of Jerusalem; they shall prosper that love thee. Peace be within thy walls, and plenteousness within thy palaces. From Psalm 122

Psalm 84: Cantique de Jean Racine Faure/Arr. Hal H. Hopson

O Lord of Hosts, how lovely are thy dwellings. My soul longs for thy courts, O Lord of Hosts. My heart and fl esh cry out; O Lord, for thee my heart and fl esh cry out. O blest are they whose hope is forever in thee, who praise thy name, who sing their songs within thy holy house. O Lord, incline thine ear; look down, my spirit longs for thee. A sun and shield is the Lord of Hosts. O Lord of Hosts, how lovely are thy dwellings. My soul longs for thy courts, O Lord of Hosts. My heart and fl esh cry out; O Lord, for thee my heart and fl esh cry out. In thee I trust; look down and hear my prayer. O Lord, hear my prayer. From Psalm 84

The Heavens Are Telling from The Creation Franz Joseph HaydnTrio: Marilyn Irons, Peter Tiggelaar, Jason Lamb

The heavens are telling the glory of God. The wonder of His work displays the fi rmament. The day that is coming speaks to the day, the night that is gone to following night. In all the lands resounds the word, never unperceived, ever understood. The heavens are telling the glory of God. The wonder of His work displays the fi rmament.

Amazing Grace Arr. Stephen Hatfi eldEric Bailey, Bagpipe

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found; was blind, but now I see. T’was grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fear relieved. How precious did that grace appear the hour I fi rst believed. When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we’d fi rst begun.

Deep River Arr. Norman LuboffThomas Cannon, bass

Deep River, my home is over Jordan. Deep River, Lord, I want to cross over into campground. Oh, don’t you want to go to that Gospel feast, that promised land, where all is peace.

My Eternal King Jane Marshall

My God, I love Thee, not because I hope for heaven thereby, nor yet because who love Thee not must die eternally. Thou, O my Jesus, Thou didst me upon the cross embrace. For me didst bear the nails and spear and manifold disgrace. Why, then why, O blessed Jesus Christ, should I not love Thee well? Not for the hope of winning heaven or of escaping hell; not with the hope of gaining aught, not seeking a reward; but as Thyself hast loved me, O everlasting Lord! E’en so I love Thee, and will love, and in Thy praise will sing solely because Thou art my God and my eternal King! From an Anonymous, 17th C. Latin text

TRIBUTE TO JANE MARSHALL

Tonight we honor one of church music’s fi nest composers, our friend and colleague Jane Marshall. The choir will be singing one of her beloved anthems, “My Eternal King.” We give thanks to God for this committed servant who has enriched our lives and contributed to our growth in the faith for so many years.

HYMN COMPETITION WINNER

The Church Music Institute and the Hymn Society of the U.S. and Canada sponsored a competition for a new hymn text celebrating music as a gift from God. The winning entry is by Stanley K. Engle, Minister of Music at Messiah Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, who wrote the hymn “For Breath of Life and Voices Strong,” sung for the fi rst time tonight. He says, “I grew up in the Mennonite Church with their rich tradition of 4-part, a cappella hymn singing. My later experiences in the United Methodist Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America have broadened both my hymn repertoire and my understanding of the role that hymns play in worship and in life. I believe that hymns are important vehicles for transmitting theological truths, committing those truths to memory, uniting believers from varied traditions, and growing and maturing personal faith.”

ABOUT THE CHURCH MUSIC INSTITUTE

Mission:

The Church Music Institute is dedicated to the practice, advancement and stewardship of the best of liturgical and sacred music for worshipping Christian congregations. The Institute offers educational courses, workshops, on-site and online resources, fosters conversation among musicians, pastors and laypersons, and sponsors research in the fi eld of church music.

backgrounds.• That leaders of music in worship must fi rst be equipped with the fi nest skills as musicians, and further

with the theological and musical skills to enable congregational song as prayer and praise.• That leaders of music in worship must have available resources that refl ect the best of literature and

practices available from current and past contributions to the music in Christian worship. • That pastors/priests and musicians must be equipped to work together so that they can combine word
