A Festival for the Living

10th-19th May 2019

York's Dead Good Festival

We recognise that, as a society, we’re not particularly good at talking about dying, death and bereavement. This festival will help people express themselves in different ways, whilst giving advice and support on a number of practical matters. Our festival is part of a network of events across the UK for Dying Matters Awareness Week.

Please note, events are free to attend unless stated. For further information visit www.yorksdeadgoodfestival.co.uk or contact the individual speakers.

THROUGHOUT THE WEEK

THE LAST POST THINGS LEFT UNSAID TIME Throughout the weekVENUE Libraries, York Hospital and Festival eventsINFO theresa.barrett@ stleonardshospice.nhs.uk 01904 777 777

We all have things we wish we’d said to a loved one who is no longer with us. Look out for our special post boxes around York and post your private message to them. There will be post boxes in the libraries and York Hospital, and we will also be bringing one to festival events throughout the week. Your message could be the one thing you wish you’d said, an update

or something they have missed since their death, or a personal letter. We hope to make a short film with anonymous snippets from the letters but you are free to opt out and we will recycle the rest.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE DOODLE ART

TIME Throughout the weekVENUE York Hospital Foyer Wigginton Rd, York YO31 8HE INFO www.yorkhospitals.nhs.uk/news

Local artist, Stephen Lee Hodgkin, will be chatting to visitors and staff in York Hospital’s main entrance during the week, helping capture moments and experiences that celebrate life. Visitors will be encouraged to use postcards to contribute stories and drawings to a large doodle. Stephen will then create a final piece inspired by these conversations for display within the hospital.

People are beginning to talk openly about death and dying, and this is a chance to gain information and dispel long-held myths and taboos. This is the perfect opportunity for people to meet up and have a chat whilst becoming informed: and enjoying tea and cake! Thinking about the inevitable in advance ensures good preparation for us and our families, and better choices to suit our individual needs. This is not a bereavement group, but a chance to speak freely about any aspects of death or dying whether good or not quite so good.

It’s important for everyone to talk about end-of-life wishes, as dying is the one thing we have in common, and it would be foolish to leave it to different minded people to decide how you want to be treated when you can no longer influence the outcome.
