Mission:SLIsupportstheeffortsofindividualswithdiverseabilitiestoachieveindependenceandactivelyparticipateinthecommunity

SLIprovidesresidential,communityintegration/dayservices,casemanagement,andskilldevelopmentprogramsforover200childrenandadultsintheTopekacommunity.AllfundsraisedfromtheFestivalofTreesgotosupportunfundedneedsofourclientssuchasdentalcare,nursing,transportation,medicalsuppliesandmore.

DescribingYourEntry

Thetitleanddescriptionofyourdesignwillbeplacedinfrontofyourentryandotherpromotionalmaterials.AsyoubrainstormideasandbegindecoratingyourtreeorwreathwritedownsomeofyourwhimsicalthoughtsoftheChristmasseasontouseincraftingyourtreedescription.Thiswillhelpwhenyouarereadytosubmityourdesignercontractanddescription.

Bespecificwithcolorsandtheme,listspecialaccessoriessuchaslighting,uniquesizeorshapeandornamentsthatplaymusictoenhanceyourdescription.Only100wordswillbeallowedandtheFestivalofTreeshastherighttochangeifneeded.Belowisanexampleofawell-writtendescription:

UnderstandingProspectiveBuyersOurhopeisthateveryentrywillhaveatleasttwointerestedbiddersandwillbemoresuccessfulwhentherearethreeorfouractivebidders.Festivalbuyersareasdiverseasyourcreations,buttherearesomekeyelementstoconsiderinplanningyourtreeorwreath.

• Individualbuyersarelookingfortrees,wreaths,etc.todecoratetheirownhomesorafamilymember’shome.Theyareoftenlookingformoretraditionaldesignswithholidayelegance.

• Businessbuyersarelookingfortrees,wreaths,etc.thatwillenhancethebusinessoffice,lobbyorshowroom.Oftentheyarelookingfortreeswithitemsorornamentsthatcanbegiventokeycustomersoremployees.

nonprofitorganization,schoolorhospital.Theirinterestcanvary,buttheywantatreeorwreaththatwillappealtotheorganizationtheyaresupporting.TreescanalsobepurchasedanddonatedbacktoSLItoplaceinoneof21homesthatclientslivein.

TreeDesignerRules&Regulations• Allgreeneryandtreesmustbeartificial.

• FestivalofTreesprovidesacustomplywoodbaseatcheck-inthatwillbeattached

tothemetalstandofyourtree.ThiscustombaseenablesvolunteerstomovetreesaroundduringtheFestivalanddelivery.Pleaseprovideyourownmetalstand(seepage4fortherequirements)asrequiredbytheFOTCommittee.

• Treesmaybeupto7½feettall,butnotaller.Widthisalsoanimportantconsideration.Fullydecoratedtreesmustfitthroughdoorwaysandresidentialhallways.

§ Thetreesareviewedfromallsides.Yourtreemustbedecorated360degreesaround.BIGtreesarefun,butthat’salottodecorate.TableTopTreesarefun–butyoucantdisplayasmuchasyoumaywant.

§ Treeswithhookedbranchesorlooselimbsarenotallowed.

§ Yourartificialtreedoesnothavetobebrandnew–butitmustbeLIKENEW.Brokenorrepairedtreesarenotaccepted.

• Lightsarerequired.Strandsmustbenewandsecurelywiredtothetrees.Ifthetreeisprelit,pleasetrytoavoidtreesthathaveallwiringinsideofthetrunkofthetree.Ifyouareusingatreewiththatwiring,telltheParkRangersbeforetheystartworkingonyourtreetoavoidlightsandwiringbeingdisconnected.

• Yourtreewillbepickedupandmovedatleastthreetimesanddeliveredbytrucktothepurchaser.Forthatreason,itisessentialthatALLdecorations,lights,etc.arewiredtothetreewithfloristwireorpipecleanerstopreventdamage.

§ Remembertousethesamecolorwireasthecolorofyourtree,i.e.greentree=greenwire,whitetree=whitepipecleaner.

§ Ornamenttoppersmustbegluedtogetheraswelltopreventornamentsfromfallingoff.Nogluingofornamentstothetreeisallowed.

• Atreeskirtorotherappropriatecoveringforthebaseofthetreemustbeincludedwiththedesign.

• Thedisplayareaaroundthetreeisacircularareaof2feetfromthetreetrunk.Allitemsunderthetreesarepartofthetreepurchase.

§ Includingitemsunder/withthetreeisnotarequirement,butitcanbeafunadditionthataddstoyourvalue.Forinstance,ifyourtreeskirthasmatchingstockings,youcouldincludethat.Ifyourwreathismade

ofcork,youcouldincludeabottleofwine.Or,ifyourornamentsaremoviethemed,youcouldincludeaBlu-Ray.

TreeStandRegulationsSelectingthepropertreestandisjustasimportantasdecidingthedesignofyourtree.Whenmakingyourpurchase,ifnometalstandiswiththetree,youwillneedtopurchaseametalstand.ThestandscanbefoundatWalmartandotherareastoresforaround$10.

Thestandneedstobeasteelconstructionwithpreferablyfour(4)legs(seeillustration)tosecurelyholdyourtree.Thetrunkshouldfitsnuglyinthecenterhole.Whenyousetupyourtreeonset-upday,therewillbevolunteersavailabletoputaself-tappingscrewthroughthebase/trunkandfourscrewsintothelegstosecureittothepallet.

PLASTICSTANDSAREPROHIBITED.

Plasticstandsarenotsturdyandeasilybreak withthemovementofafullydecoratedtree.

Ifyouplanondecoratingyourtreebeforeset-upday,firmlyattachtherodsofthethree(3)sectionsofyourtreewithself-tappingscrews.Pleasetakenotethatsometreesincorporateaconductorforthetreelightsinthetrunkofthetree.Takespecialcarethattheself-tappingscrewsdonotpenetratetheelectricalconductors.

Onceyouhavefullydecoratedyourtreeitissomewhatdifficultandcoulddisruptyourdecorationsforthevolunteerstotryandfindwherethesectionsareattached.Alittleplanningupfrontwillmakeeveryone’sjobmucheasierandprotectthebeautifultrees.

WreathDesignerRulesandRegulations

• WreathdisplaystandsareprovidedbyFestivalofTrees.

• Yourwreathwillbepickedupandmovedatleastthreetimes.Forthatreason,itisessentialthatALLdecorations,lights,etc.arewiredtothewreathwithfloristwireorpipecleanerstopreventdamage.Remembertousethesamecolorwireasthecolorofyourwreath,i.e.greenwreath=greenwire,whitewreath=whitepipecleaner.

• Ornamenttoppersmustbegluedtogetheraswelltopreventornamentsfromfallingoff.Nogluingofornamentstothewreathisallowed.

• Toincreasethepurchasevalueofanitem,theFestivalofTreeshastherighttoadjustanyentryasrequired.

• Brokenorrepairedwreathsarenotaccepted.

MantlescapeDesignerRulesandRegulations

• Allgreenerymustbeartificial.

• MantledisplayisprovidedbyFestivalofTrees.

• Decorationsmustbeattachedtoaboardthatwilllayontopofamantle.Theboardshouldhaveadepthnomorethan1.5inches,awidthof8.5inchesandnolongerthan58inches.Theboardshouldbecoveredwithfabricorothermaterialtoeliminatescratchingthepurchaser’smantle.

• Thegreenerymustbestapledtotheboardandthedisplayitemsmaybewiredtothesecuredgreenery.Wemustensurethatfallsandgetsbrokenduringthefestivalortransportingtothepurchaser’shome.

• Displayswillbemovedduringtheauction.Secureasmanyitemsaspossibletotheboard.

PorchscapeDesignerRulesandRegulations

• Porchscapesshouldincludedecorationsthatprovideabalanceddisplaywhetheritbetwotrees/topiariesflankingtheentrywayoracombinationofdecorativeitemsthatprovidebalanceandsymmetrytotheoveralldesign.Awreathorswagforthedooraddtothedesignwiththegarlandoverthedoorfinishingoffthelook.

• Allmustbeartificialandweatherproof.


• AsimulatedporchdisplaywillbeprovidedbyFestivalofTrees.Theporchareawillbeapproximately3’x5’andincludesadoorfordisplaypurposes.

• Thiscustombaseenablesthedisplaytobemoved.TheForrestRangerswillassistdesignerswithattachingtheitemsfortheporchdisplay.Pleaseensurethattheitemssittingontheporchdisplayhaveasolidbasethatcanbesecuredfordisplay.

• Yourentrywillbepickedupandmovedatleastthreetimes.Forthatreason,itisessentialthatALLdecorations,lights,etc.arewiredtothewreathand/ortreewithfloristwireorpipecleanerstopreventdamage.Remembertousethesamecolorwireasthecolorofyourentry,i.e.greenwreath/tree=greenwire,whitewreath/tree=whitepipecleaner.

DesigningandDecoratingLightsManytreesandwreathsarepre-litsoyoumaychoosetoaddmorelightstogiveyourtreeorwreathaddedappeal.Ifyouhaveatreeorwreaththatisnotpre-lit,alllightsmustbenewandhaveatleasttwo(2)stringsof100traditionallightsperfootoftree.Uselightsthatareindependentofeachothersothatifonelightburnsout,thereststayon.Donotplugmorethanthreestrandsoflightstogether.IfusingLEDlights,thenumberofstringswillvary.

• Testthelightsbeforeputtingthemonyourentryandagainbeforeaddingdecorations.Lightsshouldremainonwhileattachingthemtobesurenonearelooseorfaulty.

• Morethan5strandsoflights—pleasewireapowerstriptothebaseofyourtree.• Lightsshouldenhancetheentry,notdetractfromthem.Usestrandsoflightsthathave

thesamecolorwireasthecolorofyourtreeorwreath.Hidethewiresoitcannotbeseen.• Coloredlights.Dependingonyourtheme,coloredlightsmayenhanceyourdesign.

However,sometimeswhitelightsarethebesttouse.• Lightsmustbesecurelyfastenedtoyourtreeorwreath.Usethesamecolorwiretiesas

thecolorofyourtreeorwreath.Twotwistsaresufficienttosecurethelightsandstillmakeitpossibleforthelightstoberemovedlaterbythebuyer.

• Buymoredecorationsthanyouthinkyou'llneed,thenbuyevenmore!

FillingEmptySpacesAvarietyofmaterialscanbeusedtofillemptyspacesandaddshapetoyourentry.Suggestionsinclude:driedfloralfiller,floralandpaperribbonwrapsandbows,raffia,tulle,pinecones,moss,holly,flowers,etc.Useyourimagination!

Bowsandribbongarlandscanbeaneconomicalandappealingfinishingtouch.Somethingstorememberwhenselectingribbonare:

• floristsatinwireribboniseasiertotiethananyotherkindofribbon.Itcomesindozensofshadesandpatterns.

• velvetisbeautifulbutbecauseofthickness,itismoredifficulttotie.Ifyouplantousevelvet,youmightwanttofindsomeonewithexperiencetyingbows.

• ribboncomesinmanywidths.Thewidertheribbon,themoreyardageittakestomakeanicebow.Ittakes2to4yardstomakeabow.
