CONSTRUCTION projects on the wetlands near the OxfordVillage in Hillcrest have sparked a major outcry from thepublic and conservationists.Residents claim that local business has destroyed the flora andfauna of the area and there have been rumours of Brett Latimer,Oxford Village owner, planning to extend the shopping centreonto the wetland. In addition, it is alleged that no permission wasacquired to clear the municipal property.Lilian Develing, chairman of Confederation of MistbeltRatepayers’ Association (Conomirra) told the Hillcrest Fever thisweek that environmentalists are desperately fighting for thepres-ervation of wetlands.“Theproblemwehave is that there are laws involving wetlandsand these have been broken by the businessman. The situationhas been reported to the Department of Environmental Affairsand I received an e-mail saying that the matter is being attendedto,” she said.

Develing said the fine for disturbing awetland is anything up to R1m andanother is levied at up to R3 million fora late application for an environmentalimpact assessment. She said: “Theprogressof the fillingofthe wetland and the destruction of thewhole environment has continued at arapid rate and we are hoping that theauthorities will put a stop to it soon.”Marge Mitchell of the Keep HillcrestBeautiful Association was also con-cerned about the filling of the wetlandand construction vehicles on the site.“We cannot sit back and watch theenvironment being destroyed. Destroy-ing a wetland is a serious offence andwe hope the situation can be rectifiedsoon.”

Latimer said he has received numer-ous complaints from thepublic about thewetland (which is onhis property), beingunkempt and doubling as a criminalhide-out.“When I investigated these claims Ifound people living in this wetland, andI decided to bag the endangered plantsand cut down the alien trees to clear thearea,” he said.

“My aim is not to destroy the environ-ment, as I will be replanting the endan-gered trees. I aimtomake ita safeandse-cure space where families can get to-gether and enjoy nature.”Latimer says he has also acquired theservices of an ecologist and a landscap-er to create a playground for children.“I assure residents thatwhatever I amdoing will be for the benefit of the com-munity.”Ward 10 councillor Rick Crouch saidthathe isawareof theclearingof thewet-land, and is aware that Latimer is goingto rehabilitate the wetland.

Both incidents took place in broaddaylight,” he said.

However,hesaidthatmostofthein-cidents reportedhad takenplaceafter6pm.

“Unfortunately, due to the spiral-ling fuel price, petrol-station ownershavenowbecomeeasypreyforoppor-tunistic criminals and gangs to stealfrom as they cruise the suburbs.”

Van Bemmelen advised petrol-sta-tion owners to install CCTV cameraswithvisiblesignagewarningeveryonethatvideo footage is recordedofall ac-

to contact their security company toreport incidents as soon as it becameevident that a theft was in progress.

“It’s also import for staff to remem-ber to record vehicle registration

numbers before customers are al-lowed to put fuel in,” he said.

“Somegarage ownershave also in-vested in pumps that enable staff tosiphon petrol out of vehicle tanks todeal with instances where thievesclaim they ‘forgot’ their bank card athome inabid todriveoff andnever re-turn to pay.”

Van Bemmelen said it was impor-tant for petrol-station owners to re-port incidents to their local police sta-tion.

“There has been an upward trendin this typeof theft latelywhichmakesitessentialforpetrol-stationownerstolay criminal charges against perpe-trators to ensure they are made anexample of and [to send out the mes-sage] that they will face the full wrathof the law.”

The Internet: friend or foe?

STEPH MCLENNAN>>[email protected]

THE worlds of work, play, shopping andresearch have all undergone a revolution over the past 20 or so years, as

a result of the evolution of the internet.Technophiles and technophobes alike havebeen flung into a new, exciting and sometimes scary world. In this new sphere, someone at the other side of the world can stealmoney from your bank account at the pushof a button or access your mailbox on awhim and send rude messages to yourfriends.

When I arrive at work on a Monday morning, my inbox generally has at least 100 newmessages awaiting my attention, and I assume the same can be said for the 20 or sopeople with whom I share an openplan office. If the internet and emails did not exist, those seated at the back of this office wouldhave to swim through stacks and piles of2000odd envelopes that would have arrived containing our mail. In that sense, tree

huggers, officecleanersandthosewhocan’tswim can be everlastingly grateful for thearrival of the internet and electronic mail.

The Internet is solely responsible for theeverwidening generation gap that existswithin families, with the elderly needing tobe informed that an Ipad is not a femininehygiene product, and that WiFi is not a question followed by an expression of disgust oroutrage.

For stalkers, perverts, and those whosimply wish to surreptitiously get to knowa little more about a potential suitor or business partner, life has never been easier. Between Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, andGoogle search, you can know everythingabout somebody, short of perhaps their IDnumber and the name of their great grandparents, at the click of a button.

The research capabilities of the Internetdo not end at learning about people. Goneare the days when school children must goto the library and spend hours pagingthrough dusty copies of Encyclopaedia Brittanica to complete projects — when journalists must leave the sanctity of the office toresearch a feature piece, and when businessexecutives had to drive across town or relyon the postal service to get a contractsigned. Everything can be done behind one’sdesk while drinking copious amounts of coffee in the eversedentary lifestyle of the 21stcentury.

In the good old days, work at an officewould come to a standstill when the electricitywentoff.Nowadays, thankstotheanticsofEskom, generatorsareinplacetokeepcomputers and essential lights powered upat all times. When the Internet goes down, however, productivity grinds to a halt andthe proverbial wheels fall off spectacularly, leaving office workers with nothing to dobut make more coffee, scream at the IT department with increasing voracity as deadlines approach, and hold one unproductivemeeting after another.

What does the Internet have in commonwith nicotine, alcohol, and whoonga? Allthese commodities are addictive, thoughsome perhaps less destructively so thanothers. While a lack of internet will not leaveyou feeling like ants are crawling under yourskin, as I believe is the case with whoonga,it certainly makes highlystrung peoplemore uppity than ever. Between social media, Candy Crush, Reddit and material of anillicit nature, the internet has something toappeal to that part of every soul which isconducive to addiction.

Where to next in the digital revolution? Will we become walking WiFi boosters? Willthe average Joe trade in their rosecolouredglasses for Google glasses? Who cares?Turn off your computer, go outside and enjoy the blissful sunshine of winter in the climatic paradise of KwaZuluNatal.

EVERY morning when I wake up Iam greeted by wonderful soundsproduced by birds utilising thegreenspaces inmyneighbourhood.

Regardless of our destructivewayoflife, somebirdspeciesarestilla commonsighting inoururbanen-vironment. We can see them utilis-ing our trees in our backyard fornesting and as a source of food. When I see this, itmakesme realisehow valuable these green spacesare not only to birds but also otherlife forms that use them.

It is based on this simple obser-vation thatwere interested to knowmore on how some bird species aresurviving by utilising these frag-

THIS year marks six years that rape survivorJes Foord has risen beyond her circumstances and has used her experience to changethe lives of many women around the world.

Foord’s first step was seeing her perpetrators convicted and sent to jail. Thereaftershe opened the Jes Foord Foundation whichoffers support to rape survivors.

Foord is constantly invited to speakabout her tribulation and the foundation’smessage around South Africa.

The foundation team also went on education and awareness programmes that impact on all ages, races and genders to support rape survivors, educate the men andboys in the country and to help girls realisewhat their rights are.

However, her determination did not stopthere, Foord took her passion to help othersto another level, and in March she open hersecond counselling centre — the MultiPurpose Community Centre in Mariannhill, which provides need counselling for theMarianridge community, including nine other surrounding communities.

“We will be making this possible by partnering with other organisations, so this willbe a collaborative project in order to meetall the needs of the community by bringingtogether different expertise,” said Foord.

“We will also be concentrating on upliftment programmes for the children and yout.We are looking for sponsors for a soccer field, basketball court and cricket pitch, which willencourage the youth to find constructivewaystospendtheirtimewhilelearningvalu

“Our objectives are to render services tothe community they currently do not haveaccess to. We want to partner with stakeholders as well as community members toincrease support and development to thecommunity and facilitate upliftment of theyouth and children in these communities.

Giving parenting a new meaning>> Contemporary Parenting – growing conscious children, one parent at a timeKALISHA [email protected]

HILLCREST friends, Colleen Wilson and CandiceSmith of Contemporary Parenting knew thatthere must be a more meaningful way of com

municating with, setting boundaries for, and motivating children.

According to the duo, it took a lot of hard work andmotivation to make a success of their business.

After completing a B.Comm and her Honours in Entrepreneurship, Wilson worked in a myriad of businesses. She ended up running a training and developmentcompany for previously disadvantaged business startups, her first foray into social entrepreneurship.

“After five years of this, BEE started to play a majorrole in the business arena and I realised that I needed

toshiftthefocusofmybusinessandsawanopportunity to work for myself while still making a difference.I started a company with my brother which concentrated on creating effective BEE compliant companies,’’ said Wilson.

While running this business, she started a familyand this is when a new, and often over whelming, challenge reared its head.

“At work, I was thriving. I was in control and couldsee how my strategic planning and training resultedinapositiveoutcome.Imanagedtheprocessofchangeand cooperation in a well thought through, logical andpositive way which was the polar opposite to whatwas going on at home.’’

“I decided to shift gears and moved from businesscoaching and transformation to personal change. Fortwo years, I poured myself into research and completed personal development and parenting courses, locally and internationally. During this time, I did the‘Six Second’ Emotional Intelligence training coursewhich is where I met Smith,” said Wilson.

She said that, Smith and herself shared a passion

for changing the historical approach to parenting.“Every generation seems to mirror the way their

parents parented, and yet so many adults have to dealwith the emotional and psychological hangovers oftheir upbringing,’’ said Wilson.

After finishing her B.Comm degree at StellenboschUniversity, Smith travelled extensively, spending timeand working in the States and the United Kingdom.

Thereafter, she completed a postgraduate degreein Education and moved to Cape Town where she wasinvolvedinteachingEnglishtostreet children.Thiswasfollowed by a teaching post in Limpopo, which setSmith on her current path.

‘’I loved my teaching job in Limpopo but felt thatthere was something missing in the syllabus – something which would create resilient, conscious and resourceful pupils,’’ she explains.

‘’Although corporal punishment in schools hadbeen eradicated, it had simply been replaced with others forms of punishment, which had the same goal ofbringing about change through applying enough pressure.’’

Smith there after launched her business which involves oneonone and group EQ consultations as wellas ‘Emotional Adventuring’ group classes with children and teens to help develop their emotional intelligence in a fun way.

Simultaneously, Wilson started consulting to parents about the challenges they experience with raisingtheir children. “Raising children in today’s hedonisticsociety, dominated by materialism and social media, can be overwhelming. It is very difficult to be an aware, present and conscious parent without the insights, methodology, tools and support to do so.’’

At this time, Wilson and Smith both attended additional qualifications with ‘Six Seconds’ and realisedthey shared a passion for philosophies on personal development and parenting, and thus the discussion tocreate ‘Contemporary Parenting’ started.

‘Contemporary Parenting’ – growing consciouschildren, oneparent atatime runfourmodulecourseswhich are held over four sessions, either weekly ormonthly. The course is designed to focus on the parentand to empower them to bring about the changesthat they would like to see in their family.

NESTLED in the breathtaking Valley of a1000 Hills, 40 kms outside of Durban, is arural Zulu community called Inanda. It is atypically poor community, consisting

mainly of subsistence farmers and migrantlabourers who make the 40km commuteinto the city ever day. Thatch and tinroofed rondavels dominate the architecture, chickens roam freely, and every lotcontains a maize or vegetable garden ofsome sort. Children dressed in handmedown rags play in the streets, chasing tyreswith sticks and kicking around clumps ofrags as soccer balls.

It is the stereotypical scene that everyperson across the planet has come to associate with rural Africa, which is why theemergence of a massive halfpipe as youdrive deeper into the valley is such a shock. This is the Indigo Skate Camp, the brainchild of Element skater Dallas Oberholzer, whose dream is to "Let skateboarding takeyou places" and this has become the skatecamp's motto.

The idea of introducing skateboardingto a rural Zulu community has proved tobe a stepping stone to the opportunitiestourism and a skate camp can provide.Skateboarding to the community's expanding group of youths is more than a funactivity, it is a way to meet friends from faraway places, develop social skills and learnfirsthand about the hospitality industry.

There is tremendous synergy in this environment as visitors and campers experience African culture, and in return theAmazulu skaters are inspired by visitingskateboarders.

The camp is providing employment, skills development and education for thecommunity, and the Isithumba residentsrealize their responsibility in developingtourism in their area.

Dallas Oberholzer, the founder, was inspired to build the skate camp while traveling overland from Canada to Argentina.Through experiencing warm hospitality

and friendship from fellow board riders,Dallas set out to build a village for skateboarders in South Africa a place whereone could always be sure to meet likeminded people who live to ride.

The Valley of a 1000 Hills is rich in culture and natural beauty. All the elementswere there for the location of a permanentskate camp.

The local Zulu chiefs in the valley gavetheir blessings to the project and allocatedlandtoDallastobuildaconcreteskateparkand further accommodation. The camphas begun an organic farming project to reduce the impact on the natural environment, and the intention is to live in balancewith nature and respect the ancientknowledge and customs of the Zulu nation.

So if you're looking for an amazing cultural experience, and an opportunity to getcloser to nature, be sure to check out theIndigo Skate Camp.

Remember those days? Dayswhen life was less frenetic andfrenzied. Days when profit

uber alles didn’t seem to be society’sprimarydrivingforce.Dayswhenyouactually knew store owners by name, and the rampant, clinical corporati-sation of retail hadn’t yet begun.

Well, those days are gone. For themost part. But not at Hillcrest Kwik-Spar, which still operates in that hal-cyon era.

After all, the storewas established25 years ago to serve the community– which is something it still does, 15hours a day, seven days a week, 365days a year. Back then the redoubta-ble Des Quin was the main drivingforce behind Hillcrest KwikSpar.

Today Des still remains a share-holder in this much-loved store –joinedbylocalcoupleMikeandLeigh-Anne Egling, who have their rootsfirmly anchored in the community, withMikebeing aproduct ofHillcrestHigh School.

‘‘We,” says Mike with a hint ofpride,“aredeeplyrootedinHillcrest.”

And that, incidentally, stretches togivingbacktothecommunitythroughcharitable drives and donations.

Indeed,manyofthestaffknowcus-tomersbyname, fromPhindilework-ing at the cigarette counter toMala inFresh Produce .

And let’s not forget Kevin, whoheadsupthenewandextraordinarilypopular Sushi Bar, while the Eglings’

two daughters, Carmen and Savan-nah, are a familiar sight in the store.

Now,ofcourse,HillcrestKwikSparstocksacomprehensiverangeofmer-chandise. You’d expect that. But theyalso stock an array of goods and gro-ceries thatmakes thestoreaveritableAladdin’s Cave.

Think artisanal cheeses – withLangbaken Karoobossie being one ofMike’sownfavourites.Arangeofcon-veniencemealslikenootherfromTheFoodFarm–and these include Joey’sChickenLasagne andColleen’sOxtailin Red Wine Sauce. Indezi River full-cream yoghurt, goat’s milk and farmbutter. And that’s just skimming thesurface of it.

Ofcourse, inkeepingwiththere-cent revamp there’s now also anonsite butchery which has dou-bled in size. And that’s not tomention the on-site bakery,whichusesonlystone-groundflour.

“Another thing,” saysMike, allowing himself a small smile,

“is that Leigh’s touch is evidentthroughout the store.”

Headds thatmuchof theproducestocked is locally sourced.

“Thestore,”addsMikewithanoth-ersmallsmile,“hasdoneexceptional-lywellovertheyears.Andthat’spure-ly because of quite incredible supportfrom the community.”
