5 simple tips to beat the winter blues

(NC) As the temperature grows more frigid, snow pileshigher, and days get shorter, just the thought of leaving thehouse can seem like an insurmountable feat. When yourmood is dropping as fast as the temperature outside, thesetips and tricks may help to boost your spirits and make themost of the season. 1. Snack smarter. While the cold winter months might makeyou crave comfort foods and junky snacks, these options aretypically loaded with sugar and refined flours, making youfeel even more sluggish. Opt for whole grains and complexcarbs like spinach, yams, broccoli, beans, zucchini, andlentils which will fill you up while also providing long-lastingnourishment.2. Plan a warm weather vacation. Turn your dreams into areality by planning a trip to warmer weather. “Sometimes allwe need is a change of pace and scenery during the wintermonths to recharge and unwind,” says Pierre-Jean Mayol atAeroplan, one of Canada's leading loyalty programs.“Whether you're longing for breathtaking beaches and sun-sets in Sydney, Australia, or a relaxation getaway to the whitesandy beaches of Turks and Caicos, Aeroplan's FixedMileage and Market Fare Flight rewards make it easier totravel to over 1,300 destinations in more than 190 countriesand start at only 7,500 miles”. 3. Make your environment brighter. Shorter days filled withmore darkness can have a serious impact on our physicaland mental wellbeing. Opening blinds, trimming trees in yourbackyard, and sitting closer to windows can help provide you

with an extra dose of sunshine. 4. Get active. The winter usually makesus want to curl up in a blanket and glueourselves to the couch for hours. Makean effort to break that cycle because ex-ercise can actually help improve yourmood and raise the brain's levels of sero-tonin and endorphins. 5. Embrace the season. Instead ofthinking of ways to avoid the cold andsnow, take up a sport like ice skating orhockey. Make the most of the slopes andplan an adventure to the world renownedmountains of Whistler, British Columbia. With access to any seat at any time onall Air Canada flights, Aeroplan's flightrewards make it easier to start planningyour winter adventure right now. Tue November 10, 2015 The City would like to inform citizens of changes toovernight on-street parking restrictions in the north, east and west sides of the City. An amendment to theCity’s Traffic By-law was passed by Common Councilat a final reading on November 9, 2015. The restric-tions will take effect immediately.

The parking restrictions mean that an overnight on-street parking ban in the North, East and West partsof the City will be called when snow clearing is re-quired. The parking ban is referred to as the “North,East and West Temporary Overnight Parking Ban”.The only area of the City exempt from the North, Eastand West parking ban is the South Central Peninsula, where the separate and traditional on-street parkingbans (also known as “snow bans”) will remain inplace.

On-street parking between called bans is permittedunless otherwise prohibited by on-street signage andthe Motor Vehicle Act.

As is the case with the overnight parking bans called

in the south central peninsula, the City will advise citi-zens through www.saintjohn.ca and several othermedia when a North, East and West overnight parkingban is called. To receive notifications direct to email, citizens can sign up to receive City News. Citizensmay also call the parking ban information line at 658-4040. Should a ban be declared, the City’s website, information line and local media will all be updated by3:45pm.

To prepare for an overnight parking ban, citizenswho rely on on-street parking in the North, East andWest parts of the City are encouraged to make alter-nate off-street parking arrangements ahead of the firstsnowfall. Citizens looking for off-street parking and cit-izens who have additional off-street parking can makeuse of the site www.shareyourride.ca to connect.

Citizens have a responsibility to secure off-streetparking and to seek information on when these park-ing bans are declared. The City thanks citizens fortheir cooperation as efforts are made to enhance thesnow clearing service.

24 FOCUS Saint John Fall 2015

Proper footwear is much more important than you maythink as is the quality of your footwear. We often, in thiseconomy, purchase footwear based on the price and es-thetic without taking into account how many steps we takein a day and how often we are on less than ideal terrain. When fixing the foundation of our house, we certainly wouldnot take any short cuts in it's structure; same goes with ourbodies. Our feet are the very foundation of our body's align-ment so, without proper support, we are leaving ourselvesopen to discomfort and instability. Having your feet meas-ured and properly fitted is a practice used far too less thesedays. A professional fitter can help you ensure the size andvolume of the footwear is appropriate for your particular feet.

Different things can hinder your shoe fitting experiencesuch as wide or narrow feet, bunions and general foot de-formities. It can also be a challenge if you wear custom footorthotics (corrective insoles). Whatever the case may beand whatever your particular obstacle is, it is important tochoose footwear that is appropriate for your foot shape andlife style. Much like clothing, it can take some trial and errorto find something that fits just right. Just know that it will def-initely be worth it!

There are some important things to consider when look-ing at quality footwear. A good, strong heel counter will giveyou stable rear foot support. This is the part of the shoe thatwraps around the back of your heels. Give it a squeeze tomake sure it is not flimsy. You also want to be sure that thefootwear bends in the right area. Turn the shoe upside down(sole side up) and give it a flex. The shoe should bendwhere your foot does, not at the arch. This will tell you if theshoe has a proper flex shank or not. Make sure the treaddesign suits your needs, perhaps you want more traction foroutside use and less for inside. You decide what is right foryour specific needs. If your need is stability, make sure thesole base is nice and wide. This will give you maximum con-tact with the surface you are walking on and help to stabilizeyour step.

Whatever you decide upon, make sure the company youpurchase from will allow you to return them if you decide todo an at home test. Walk around the house for an hour ortwo, take your stockings off and examine your feet for redmarks or blisters. You may also want to try them with a fewdifferent thicknesses of socks and different insoles if appli-cable.

Proper footwear is much more important

"Kitchen Talk" BY Jim Lawrence

Kitchen designing with pros

A kitchen make over goes through three stages: Before, Designs and After. A real kitchen renovation does take a littlelonger than the typical 30 minutes TV kitchen renovation programs. Unlike the TV make overs and the one shown in thisarticle, a lot more does occur between the before and after. How do you make sure that your project goes smoothly andtimely? Plan, delegate and use professionals to help that project come together. A professional kitchen designer typicallycan really bring a project together for you from start to finish.First a good designer will listen to your ideas, or maybe lack ofideas to start your project. There are designers out there that can come into your home, and sit down and right on the spot work the designs and ideaswith you. Normally if both spouses are interested in the projectthey should both be there to sit in on the first design session. Areally good designer will keep this process moving along, en-gage you both in the preliminary ideas and concepts so it iseasy, informative and entertaining.

As the concepts are laid out and a floor plan is generated, usually with professional input, ideas that you thought not possible will come to light. Your designer should be able to turnthem into 3D designs that will bring your new kitchen conceptsto life.

Once the designs are complete your designer will be able toquickly generate a complete budget for you. If you do not havea contractor to do the renovation part of the project, the designer can usually suggest to you the right sized and reliable contractor for your project.

So...in short, the best way to get that kitchen with the "Wow Factor" is to work with pro's. This article was written by Jim Lawrence www.AvondaleKitchens.com They have designers in your area every week doing professional designs and quotes. Check them out on the following:www.AvondaleKitchen.com www.Houzz.com www.facebook.com/AvondaleKitchensAndBaths Contact them directly at 800-561-4112 or book them through your favorite decorator or contractor.

(NC) Winter sports from skating to skiing or even shoveling the driveway are part of the quintessential Canadian experience. One of the most neglected, yet crucial aspect of winter activity is hydration. While we typically associate hydration with thebalmy days of summer, when the heat is reminding us of our thirst, not staying properly hydrated regardless of the time ofyear can make your heart work harder, decrease energy levels and make you feel weaker.

If you want to optimize your winter workouts check out these tips for proper cold weather hydration:

Set a water goalPay attention to signs and symptoms of dehydration and inadequate liquid consumption. If you're experiencing headaches,

muscle cramping, or fatigue, it could be a sign that your body needs more fluid.Grab of bottle of water, or any other beverage like tea or juice to stay hydrated.

Match your drink to your activityThe Canadian Beverage Association suggests aligning your drink selection withyour activity level and caloric needs. If you're exercising for an extended period oftime, look for options that will keep your body fueled at peak performance. Scienceshows that the water, carbohydrates and electrolytes in sports drinks provide sig-nificant hydration and athletic performance benefits for active individuals. Look forfront-of-package caloric labelling and low- and no- calorie beverages for smart hy-dration choices.

Opt for warm beveragesJust the thought of an ice cold glass of water can send chills down our spine duringthe winter months. Try warming up with a thermos of hot water with lemon or greentea. Not only are these great hydrating options, but calorie-free too.

The beverage industry has set a goal through their Balance Calories initiative toreduce non-alcoholic beverage calories consumed per person nationally by 20 percent by 2025. More information is available at www.balancecalories.ca. www.newscanada.com
