Our new neighbors, Harold “Duane” and Donna, are originally from Wichita, Kansas.
Celebrating 64 years of marriage on March 18th, they are blessed with 3 daughters, 7 grand-
children and 8 ½ great-grandchildren. Their first car was a brand spanking new 1956 Chevy
convertible. Duane and Donna have been retired for 20 years and they believe their greatest
accomplishment in life has been travelling across the USA for 8 ½ of those years. What a
wonderful experience and what stories they must have to tell. I would say that their greatest
accomplishment has been being married for 64 years! Donna worked 20 years for Jafra
Cosmetics in Los Angeles, California and Duane worked in the publishing business there for
26 years. They also lived in the Bay area for 18 years. They enjoy playing cards with friends.
After waiting anxiously for 1 year and 5 months, they are happy to be here as some of their
lifelong friends have also found a home here at The Village.
Wow, where does the time go? The New Year is now rolling in full force and it’s almost
Valentine’s Day. I cannot tell you how sweet it is to see so many couples every day, still loving,
holding hands, and showing genuine concern for one another. My hubby and I have been married
almost 18 years but have been together 23 years. We still hold hands and cuddle on the loveseat to
watch our favorite shows.
As I look at my own life and roads I have traveled, I’m reminded of all the love that surrounds
me. I have God, the almighty Father, my husband, children, grandbabies, parents and a multitude of
friends and family that surround me and help mold me into the person I am. I am blessed daily.
There are many stories floating on the information highway so I cannot begin to tell you the
origination of Valentine’s Day. Several religions and medieval folk stake claim to the creation of
the holiday. I can tell you that Cadbury’s heart shaped boxes of chocolates appeared in the 1860’s,
Hershey’s Kisses in 1907, and Hallmark Valentine’s Day Cards in 1913.
I hope you all join us for our Valentine’s Dinner on February 13, 2020. Make sure our team
receives a picture of you and your sweetie, whether it’s your spouse, child, grandbaby or fur baby to
hang on the Sweethearts Tree!!!
I leave you with one final word by Paulo Coelho: “When we love, we always strive to be-
come better than we are. When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us be-
comes better too.”
Wishing you a healthy and energetic February. Happy Valentine’s Day!!!

Love is in the air…. Truly, love is felt all throughout this special community of ours: love for God, love for our families and love for our neighbors. Come start the month of love by joining in our Love Song Sing-along on Monday, February 3rd. I’ve gathered love songs from the 1910’s through the 1970’s that we all know and love to sing. Speaking of singing, Rico Mariano entertained us royally at our bi-monthly birthday party in January. I was disappointed that not more residents came to hear him croon so many beloved tunes for us. We do offer rides in the cart to and from our birthday parties, so please take advantage of the ride so you can enjoy great entertainment, cake, ice cream and camaraderie at our next one in March. We’re starting a new series for the next few months when weather can prevent us from venturing too far from home. It’s called “Armchair Traveler”, where we will visit an interesting part of the world through an informative video and then enjoy a snack that is from the area. This month we’ll be going to Spain and I’m planning a vegetarian and gluten free typical Spanish dish. Chef June’s menu for our Village Valentine Dinner looks amazing, so please get your tickets early! Keep spreading the love… Solveig

Dear Village Community,
We are well into the New Year of 2020 and I hope and pray that it will be a year of happiness
and health for all of you. No matter what we may experience in the coming year we will always have
much to praise Our God for and to be thankful to Him for providing the things we need. Praise and
thanksgiving are always appropriate things for Christians to give to God.
Every thing we need in order to live righteous and good lives is given to us in the word of God.
When it comes to praise, the Book of Psalms is an excellent guide for Christians to follow. Psalm 27
is one of the wonderful Psalms of Praise contained in our Bibles. I have included part of it here for
your enjoyment and encouragement. The idea of a “sacrifice of Joy” really intrigues me. May your
lives be full to overflowing with joy every day.
PSALM 27: 1-6
The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear: The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?
When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh, My enemies and foes, They stumbled and fell. Though an army may encamp against me, My heart shall not fear; Though war may rise against me,
In this I will be confident. One thing I have desired of the Lord, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord All
the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord, And to inquire in His temple. For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; In the secret place of His tabernacle
He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock. And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me; Therefore I will offer sacrifices
of joy in His tabernacle; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord. Pastor Bob, Village Community Church

Dear Residents,
Happy February!
Welcome to the month that we honor our close relationships (or our valentines). It is the ability to be close to
someone else in our lives that bring us joy. It is the moments of kindness that we share that give us the wonder-
ful memories that make life special. I hope you will be able to create some special memories with those you
love this year or be able to relish in the memories you have of those special moments of years past. I thank God
for the ability to forget some of the struggles and remember some of those special moments I have been
through.
Every day I go in the Café, I can't help but appreciate how nice it is. Though not much is changed from before, it
is just such a nice place to be. Just to sit there as residents and friends come in and enjoy the food as they visit
and get to know each other better brings a smile to my heart. The Café is where community happens. It is almost
like magic. It helps to transform strangers into friends and family. Be sure to stop by and share a meal and a
little of yourself at lunch.; you will be glad you did. And for those who just want to grab a bite to eat, that is fine,
too... :) Our new weekend chef is Samantha Carlson. Stop by and welcome her to The Village. Remember
that the Café is open from 8 am - 2 pm for drinks and snacks. Breakfasts and suppers can be arranged ahead of
time. Breakfast is served at 7:30 am and supper is served at 5:00 pm.
Thank you to those of you who came to our town hall meeting. I hope that through the information presented,
you will better understand some of the things happening around the Village and some of the challenges we are
facing. We also had a very good presentation at our residents meeting by the Gresham Police officer that is
usually assigned to our area. Be sure that you are taking all precautions to protect your property. Most of what
he recommended is what we talk about in our Helpful Information Guide, so be sure to read that if you have not
read it recently.
It has come to my attention that some residents do not realize that most apartments have at least two heat
sources. If one fails, do not hesitate to turn on the other one. The most efficient source is the heat pump which
provides both heating and cooling for your apartment. All remodeled units have heat pump units. Then there are
the baseboard heaters that are in your bathroom and bedroom, and sometimes other places in your apart-
ment. These will normally be able to heat your house by themselves if needed. We do not want any one to have
to be cold in their apartment. If one of your heaters is not working, please notify us as soon as possible. Call the
Village number 24/7 for any heating issues. If you do not have an adequate second heat source we will bring you
temporary space heaters to help you stay warm until your permanent heater is repaired.
Our remodels are progressing well; # 120 will be done this month .
We will have new residents moving into #57 this month. They will be our newest married couple as they are
getting married in February. Congratulations to John Barrows and Rose Flewelling. Please watch for other
transitions in your neighborhoods and welcome them to The Village.
Our Thankfulness Wall this month asks the question: "What is the best expression of friendship that you have
experienced? " Stop by and share your thoughts and see what others have written.
Have a great February! ~ Dennis
