Just to inform you about the SV trial held the same day: Th9 L987SV Schutzhund-Champion was Helmut Huber with his 6 year old bitch Bona vonWaldwinkel SchH 3, FH. His scores: A 100 points' B 99 points and C

and L4 scored a Good . 6 Eeams were only satisfactory and onl-y one unsatis-factory.

t'tr. Georg Dietrich, one of the trial judges, wrote in his critique(and this seems to be of utmost importance):

"I was especially inpressed by the many dogs in thatChampionship trial who not only perforned with excellencebut po"se"" an excellent STRUCTURE. The presence ofGerman Shepherd Dogs with outstanding working ability andexcellent tonformation underl-ines the decision of the SV

that in the future only those dogs qualified for breedingcan be entered.tt

The SV with this decision to upgrade the structural qualiLiesof Working Dogs demonstrated clearty- ihe aim which the 'ffather" of thebreed has said over and over again: ttULility and Beauty are equallynecessary f or a German Shepherd, a total German Shepherd.Dog.t'

I woul-d like to direlt your attention to the fact that among the91 entries of the SV Tria1, ELEVEN Bitches. performed with excellentresults. As a matter of f act the Victrix 'and the second pJ-ace were bothbitches. Mr. Heinz G1{lck, the National Training Director of the SV,pointed out that last year and again in L987 the participating bitchesbia exceptionally we11. A fact -.'ery member should pay atEention to sinceit seems to be riaety believed that females are ldss aggressive and softerthan their male counterPart.

For club members who are interested in Search and Rescue dogs'especially in training German Shepherd Dogs for avalanche work: TheGeiman Seirch and Rescue organization (DRB) St. Georg c1ub, extends aninvitation to us. If you would know how humiliating it is for a blind person with aGuide Dog to have some manager of sone establishment tell you that you wonttbe served, you vould feel as great about this story as I do.

'Usually I am absolutely not in favor of nore and more laws beingpassed by the legislature but there is one new law in Cal-ifornia I supportedwholeheartedly.

Effective New Years Day it is illegal to haul a dog in back of a pickup truck without an adequate restraint. Nationwide some 100r000 dogs wereflung from truck beds and kil1ed laet year, according to Mr. Edward Cubrda, the Director of the Los Angeles Society for the Prevention of CrueLto toAnimals. Please support simtlar Laws in your State to prevent injury andeven death not only- to animals but also people because when these Poor dogsf all of f , traf f ic accidents ar'e the results.

Again I would like to take this opportunity to ask the members of theBoard ana the general rnenbership to send news stories about German ShepherdDogs serving in "'I*iigiil:I-*t"ll.?**I::iioooo

''TI.{AS TTIE NIGST BEF0RE.

rn the kitchen rhe big shepherd dog laid on his rug by the srove. He was as usual-, alert ro the sounds of the night outside the door. The people of the house were long since asleep, rnrith dreams of thecomming Christmas morning dancing in their heads. The cats were nestledbeside the 1itt1e girl of the house, purring contentedly.rn the hours before dawn, the big dog jerked awake to the sense thatsomething was amiss. rn the basement, a drafty w:indow 1et in a puff ofwind whieh extiguished the furnace's pilot light. Ihe smel1 of gas waftedup through the heat registers. The big dog rose and bristled at the srnell, growling deep in his chest. He padded quickly into the little girl's bedroom, and rn'hining softly, nuzzLed her cheek. When this failed to rouse her, he began to lick her faceurgently, and to paw at her sleeping form, The little girl grumbled inprotest, and slapped at the dog. Not about to be put off, he continued totrv to arouse his little mistress, and she finally awoke, eoughing at thestrange smell which fil1ed her room. She struggled frorn her bed, and withthe big dog at her si.de, made her way to her parentrs room.Iler father awoke, and with much speed made the mother and child leavethe house. They waited in the yard, with the dog and the two cats, huddledtogether under a blanket. The father opened all the windows, and relit thepilot light, and repaired the drafty u.indow, Soon the sun rose, and the family, sat in their l-iving room before the Christmas tree, and all were gratefullyoetting the dog who had gaurded their sleep on the night before Christmas.

Dear Friends of the four-legged Soldier,

Most of you are aware of the fact that I often time my correspondence toyou around some holiday, and this newsletter fits that timing. If all goeswe1l, you should be getting this oor or before, .Ys!e5d1[aa. Year af teryear our Country remembers the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of theeleventh rnonth, and \^re use that time to honor "a11" veterans. I for one amcertainly proud of the fact that I am a decorated, combat, veteran (thank God!and I believe in the parades, etc., but I do not believe that we use thatday to honor "all" veterans.

. By now you should know that I have timed this letter to the fact of dogsbeing left-out of the celebration. It seems that somehow we (the country)are able to parade, and make yearly speeches, and generally honor soldiers ofthe two-legged kind, while the four-legged kind is all but forgotten. Therewill be no pgrades for the K-9 heros, and little will be said of them, butyou and I will remember. I believe that Veteran's Day, and Memorial Day, areglaring examples of why this project exists. We believe in giving honor to'14-11" of the veterans. And I strongly believe that when this memorial isffiE-ify realized, and a permanent memory is j-n p1ace, then there will alsobe a parade, and from that poj-nt onward the dogs of war will always beremembered. And by the way, if you have one of our shirts, please wear iton Veteran's Day.

Speaking of the shirts, I have enclosed somethi-ng which is intended togive you some idea of how the shirts actually work. The need is to get theword out, and these shirts do draw attention to the project. The shirt itselfis made in America of dense cotton and polyester (50/50). It is suitable forwear by both men and women, and is available in sizes S,M,L'XL. If you areinvolved with doq shows r or are employed in the dog businesj;,, then I wouldespecially encourage you to wear one of these cofrfreriffiTFEring thoseactivlties. Many of us are a bit shy about.approaching people with regardsto the project, and this shirt will help such a person by causing others torespond to you. In other words, if you wear the shirt you can bet thatsomeone will ask you about it. Thanks to Robert Ko11ar, our logo is both eye-catching and unique. It is his personal creation, and it cannrot be foundanywhere, except in connection with this memorial. The cost, includingpostage, is $10.

AIso enclosed is a black and white copy of the enlistment certificate.I say B&W, because the actual certificate is fuIl-color, red, r+hite, and blue. Here again we have a very attractive way of drawing needed attention to ourefforts. The certificate is designed to be mounted and displayed for othersto seei as it too is both eye-catching and unique. Since it is a memorial

-2-army, I feel it only right, that we include dogs of the past. A perfectexample of this is the fadt that my former scout dog, "Ebony", is the firstdog to be registered into this program. Some people are very close to petswho have passed away, and the registration of these dogs is an excellent wayto both honor and remember. A1so, lf you happen to know of someone who hasadogwrrffispeci-ffiem,thenreg-isteringti}atdogcanmakeanexce11entgift,. It is certainly a most unique gift idea.

As far as actual news goes, there rea1ly isn't much Lo report. The mostsignificant thing to happen has to do with the phone. Up until last Wednesday,we had relied on my personal phone,_but that is no longer the gase:__!bg_^National War Doqs Memorial Proiect nbw has its' own phone - (919) 488-8459.I am most often near to the phone, but when I am unable to be here, theanswering machine should be on. I must say that it is most encouraging tome how word continues to spread , in spite of the fact that. there has been nophone for most of the summer. What this says is that we have heart-feltinterest, rather than superficial. We have a long haul before us, and Ibelieve that we have long-haul people with us. Hang in there. Spread theword. And if possible, drop us a liner or give us a caI1.

You may be interested to know that some people on our mailing list areinvolved with writing books about war dogs. Some of these are scheduled forrelease in the near future, and I will surely keep you posted. Itike Bouchardis one such person, and he is producing a collection of stories about caninecombatteamS.Mike'sbook,''.',wil1inc1udeachapteron me and Ebony, with a special emphasis on the memorial project. Mj-ke'sheart is really into this thing, and he includes mention of the project on allof his literature, including his envelopes. And by the way, for some time Ihave been working on my on book, and several chapters have already beenproduced. I am presently without the necessary backing t ox have yet to findthe right publj-sher, but I do believe that one day I will be able to share mystory in a much more expanded form. I have always contended that Ebony isworthy of a movie, and I continue to believe it.

In closinq, here are a few bits of war dogs trivia.rAmerica's first war dog hero was a male German Shepard named "Chips"r,The first l"larine dog to be K.I.A. was a Dobe named "Rol-o".,Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt registered his Scottie "FaIa" in the War Dog Fund-.The War Dog Fund has now given birth tO The 9{ar Dogs Memorial Army.

Dear Interested Person,Throughout the United States we have memorials to the brave

soldiers who gave their all during times of war. The fact thatthey served with honor during WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, sha1lnever be forgotten; and rightfully so. We as a nation can be proudof the monuments, and the memorials, buil-t in memory of such worthyservice. Yetr w€ must feel some sense of injustice when we realizethat the service of war dogs has been left out, and in fact, isquickly fading from memory. It is the purpose of this letter tobring this injustice to your attention, and to invite you to joinwith us in an effort to correct this situation. The National War Dogs Memorial Project was created for the purposeof building a lasting memory to the servi-ce of dogs, during timesof armed conflict. It is our specific intention to build a monumentto aII such dogsr on the grounds of Washington, D.C. It will be a"National Monument". Although this is obviously a necessaryundertaki.g, it is equally obvious that it. is an enormous undertal<ing. We need help. Andr w€ specifically need the kind of help that hasdog sol-diers at heart. No exact figures exist as to how many menare alive and well because of dogs, but 101000 is a pretty good guessfrom just the Vietnam War. These four-legged soldiers are certainlydue a memory in bronze and stone, and we could sure use your supportin making it happen.

There are several $/ays in which you can he1p. Of course money is abig part of the effort, and your donations are tax-deductible. But,money is not the only thing. Your Congressmen need to know thatthis project exists, and you can write to encourage their support. You can also help by telling others who may be interested, and I amavailable to personally speak to your group, ox organization. Ifyou are interested in making a donation t oE are desiring additionalinformation, or simply want to be on our mailing 1ist, then pleasedo so thru the above address and phone.

Having served as a Scout Dog Handler during the Vietnam War (47LhScout Dogs-I01st Abn.Div. ) I fu1ly recognize that there are notenough of us to carry the load, We need the participation of allwho see the injustice, and desire to create the memory. As Presidentand founder of this organizttion, I appeal to you for your he1p, andI encourage you to do so today. Thank you for your time, and I lookforward to working with you to complete this necessAry, andproject. fffi/,

Like many guys who spent tirne inthe "Nam", I was drafted. The fact ofthe matter is that I didn't want to go. Idisagreed with what was going on overthere, but I had stronger feelings withregards to serving my country.Shangely enough,.I had high hopes forplaying professional baseball, and Iwas waiting for that draft notice whenthe other one carne. Needless to say, itwas not my team of choice.

I had both basic and advanced train-ing at Ft. Gordon, GA, and I spent agood deal of that time praying that Iwould somehow not get orders forVietnam. But I did. In September of'69 I arrived in Vietnam and imrnedi-ately began to pray that I would not beassigned to the 101st Airborne Divi-sion. But I was.

Then I prayed that I wouldn't besent north to I corps, where the heav-iest fighting was taking place. But thatis exactly where I went. In fact, a C-130dropped me off right in the heart of Icorps, at Base Camp Evans. A Chinookthen took me to Camp Sally, and aHuey lifted me right into the boonies.

By Joseph J. White

So I simply prayed for my life, andthat prayer was answered.

My actual assignment was withCharlie Company, 2/501st, 101st Air-borne Division, in the leech-infestedmountains near the city of Hue. Myjob of point man was given to me onmy very first day in the field, and itlasted for L4 months. I would be thefirst guy down the trail more than 250times, and live to tell about it. In fact, not one man would die or be woundedwhile I was on the job.

My good fortune, a whole book initself, was due in part to my ability as apoint man, the talents of my fellorv"grunts", and the fact that I had anexcellent platoon leader. But most ofall, it is because I spent eight monthswith a black angel who would ratherhave been dead than to have been asoldier in the Nam.

As far as the military was concerned, this black angel was simply dog #030M of the 47th Scout Dog Platoon. To me she was a guardian angel in theform of a black female German Shep-herd. This wonderful scout dog was

the source of great joy and infinitesafety to countless soldiers; and she isthe main reason for my being alivetoday.

I fell in love with scout dogs the veryfirst time I carne into contact with one.Up until this time I had never evenheard of such a thing. It happened oneday while I was cutting a trail forCharlie Company. Most of the duy hadbeen spent hacking my way throughtriple-canopy jungle, when I suddenl3'broke onto a large trail. It rvas not yourtypical old G.I. trail. This was obvious-ly an enemy path, with both heavy andrecent traflFc*ani' wider and it couldhave been a "gook" freeway'.

Our platoon leader ordered ourmovement to stop, and the next thing Iknew there was a Huey hovering overour position. A rope was tossed overthe side, and a man rappelled dorvn tous. Then, to my total ama"ement, adog was lowered down another rope tojoin the man on the ground. I was soblown away by the whole scene that Igrabbed my Instamatic and rnade surethatlgotapicture.

I quickly learned that dog teamswere often used on hot trails. These

Vier ilclm heroesCanllnucd From Page l4dogs had a super sense of hearing to beused as an early warning device. Theycould snnell beyond our imagination, tothe point of being able to detect under-ground bunkers. And they were alertfor booby-traps. It was a good feelinghaving that dog out front, especiallywhen I had done it so often without thedog. We would use dog teams severaltimes after that, but I was addicted tothe concept atter the first time.

After six months with Charlie Com-pily, and never losing a man, I wasallowed a transfer to the 47th ScoutDog Platoon-first out of Camp Sally, and tJren later at, Phu Bai. I not onlyhad a strong desire to be a dog handler, but I also had a strange sense of urgen-cy. Something deep within me was teil-ing me that if I wanted to go homealive I had better get out of CharlieCompany. I would learn later thatwithin weeks of my getting a transfer,Charlie Company would get am-bushed. The point man and six otherswere killed, and seven more were seri-ously injured. Many more would die inthe months to iollow.

When I joined the 47th Scout DogPlatoon I had an excellent reputationas a point man: I was the guy whocould get you through it in one piece.Once I got teamed with a dog, thingsgot even better. I was assigned to a dogna-ed Ebony, and she too had anexcellent reputation. Several dogswere available to choose from, but shestood alone in both personality andability. In making my final choice Iasked for advice from my fellowhandlers, and to a man they all said,Ebony. We would quickly becomeknown throughout the area as the"good luck team".

It is safe to say that a dog teasr was

iAt"a for when you didn't want yourown guy at point. These were the timeswhen ybu eipected to get ambushed orbooby-trapped, and using the dog wasa way of protecting your own men. Adog tenrq was rarely used on a safetrail, and often we were called to a mis-sion where enemy contact was beingrnade right up until the time we got[here.

One guy in my platoon got shilt at 0neveri- singie mission he \^,enl ,,'ro. An-

other guy, who had transferred in atabout the same time as I did, was"wasted" in an ambush on only his sec-ond trip out. Dangerous missions werethe routine of a scout dog handler, butii, was never routine.

. The fact that I had first walkedpoint without a dog enhanced my abil-

' ity as a dog handler, and made mesomewhat unique to the trade. Myrecord of safety stayed with me, butthe real credit has to go to Ebony; shewas better at point than any humancould even hope to be. Our record ofsafety quickly spread throughout thelines. It was not at all unusual for meto get off a chopper with Ebony, atwho-knows-where in the jungle, andhear someone say, "Heyl There's thatguy and his black dog. Now everythingis gonna be O.K." And it would be.

Ebony was truly a great scout dog. Ahero in every sense of the word. Shewould find booby-traps before any sol-dier could get mairned. She would alertus to an ambush being set up morethan 50 yards away. Some have saidthat she could even hear a mortarbeing loaded on a distant hill. Moreguys than can be counted are alivetoday because of this dog.

But she had perhaps an even greatertalent as an ambassador of smiles. Nomatter how down and out you were-no matter how bad things had been-Ebony could fill your face with joy.She gave more smiles to combat sol-diers in need than any Bob Hope orUSO show ever could. She was morethan an entertainer-she was a sol-dier!

The thing that made Ebony mostfamous, and most remembered, wasnot her ability to beg you out of anLRP dinner, or your prized peachesand pound cake. It was a trick that shehad learned before my time, and it wascentered around the commanci "deaddog". You would say, "Ebony, wouidyou rather be in the Army or be a deaddog?" She would drop over dead everytime, and she seemed to love doing it.At this point in the war most combatsoldiers had a poor opinion of the mili-tary, and it really cracked them up tosee this dog which felt the same way.

Some gup in the Scout Dog Platoonwill remember the day we put head-phones over Ebony's ears, and shebobbed her head to the beat of a JimiHeudrir record. Others will foreverremember her as the dog which didn'tlike tbe Anoy, and would make themsnile and feel good while in the midstof adversity. And many more willremember her as the dog which foundthe booby-trap, or heard the impend-ing ambush.
