Agriculture at Fort Hays State goes back to the time of Martin Allen, an area pioneer and homesteader who felt there should be an institution of higher learning that taught modern farming methods. He urged the state legislature to petition the federal government to grant the land of the recently closed military fort to the state of Kansas for education and agriculture research. Agriculture was part of FHSU’s Department of Biological Sciences until 1973, when it became a separate department.

The Department of Agriculture prepares students for careers in modern agriculture. The development of practical management skills, coupled with the teaching of current scientific methods, provides students with a desirable balance of application and theory.

Degrees are offered in Agricultural Business, Agronomy, Animal Science, Beef Cattle Management, Agricultural Education, and General Agriculture. The department also manages FHSU’s University Farm, a 3,800- acre operation that is self-sustaining and serves as a teaching laboratory.

Department of Agriculture Funding Needs

The following priorities are listed in order of importance.

College Farm (enclosed classroom adjacent to arena)An enclosed classroom is needed to facilitate curriculum for courses such as livestock selection and observation, beef production, and swine production. Precision Farming EquipmentTractors, combines, and other equipment fitted for precision farming are needed, along with the accompanying software programs.

Student Scholarships Scholarship support can come in the form of gifts to the Agriculture Scholarship Fund or by establishing an annual or endowed fund.

Consumable Resources (student faculty travel, prof. devel., etc.)Lab materials, student support, and faculty necessities are examples of items that need to be renewed on an annual basis.
