Agriculture at Fort Hays State goes back to the time of Martin Allen, an area pioneer and homesteader who felt there should be an institution of higher learning that taught modern farming methods. He urged the state legislature to petition the federal government to grant the land of the recently closed military fort to the state of Kansas for education and agriculture research. Agriculture was part of FHSU’s Department of Biological Sciences until 1973, when it became a separate department. The Department of Agriculture prepares students for careers in modern agriculture. The development of practical management skills, coupled with the teaching of current scientific methods, provides students with a desirable balance of application and theory. Degrees are offered in Agricultural Business, Agronomy, Animal Science, Beef Cattle Management, Agricultural Education, and General Agriculture. The department also manages FHSU’s University Farm, a 3,800- acre operation that is self-sustaining and serves as a teaching laboratory.
