FHSU FoUndation 2014

Global, regional, and local challenges and opportunities that past generations could hardly imagine meet the college students of today. Yet some questions retain their force. What is a meaningful life for me? What is just? Is there a God? Attempts to answer these questions in a rapidly changing world require critical thinking, ethical reflection, and intellectual virtues.

Philosophy is the pursuit of a meaningful life through rational inquiry. To this end, philosophy students at FHSU practice achieving a working understanding of the central questions of metaphysics, epistemology, and value theory. Fort Hays state students are trained to be respectful, open-minded, sincere, and courageous. The goal is not merely to understand what a meaningful life is, but to live such a life in accordance with one’s considered values.

Through our teaching, scholarship, and service activities, the members of the Department of Philosophy seek to serve our students, the university, and regional community by training people to think well about fundamental questions that cannot be answered empirically.

In December of 2013, your Fort Hays State University Foundation announced the Power of One scholarship campaign, with a goal of raising $8 million by December 31, 2014.

Your interest in this program and consideration for funding are greatly appreciated.

Fort Hays State University Foundation

The following priorities are listed in order of importance.

Student ScholarshipsA strong scholarship program plays an important role in attracting and assisting outstanding students. These gifts can be established through annual giving or endowed named funds.

Endowed ProfessorshipRecruitment and retention of qualified faculty can be a challenge. Endowed faculty positions provide recognition for exceptional teaching, research, and service. An endowed professorship also serves as stipend that can be used by a professor for research or other academic projects. The state of Kansas’ Faculty of Distinction program matches allocated earnings from theses funds, doubling the initial investment.

Faculty Development FundsAll faculty members are called to engage in research. Funds are needed to support the cost of research and to cover publishing expenses and the presentation of papers at regional and national symposiums.
