The Department of Teacher Education at Fort Hays State University prepares pre-service educators seeking initial licensure in Kansas. The program spans early childhood, elementary, middle level, secondary, and an alternative licensure avenue for grades 6-12. We have both on-campus and virtual/online formats for more than 1,100 students. The department also provides expertise to area schools and professional organizations by preparing surveys, compiling and implementing research, and furnishing consultative services. The teacher education department is responsible for preparing the next generation of teachers. Through work-based experiences and coursework, students build a solid foundation for successful teaching careers. The department encourages students to inspire children to embrace the challenge of learning. Department of Teacher Education Funding Needs

The following priorities are listed in order of importance.

Transfer Student ScholarshipsThere are very few transfer scholarships available to students even though more than 60 percent of FHSU’s Teacher Education students are transfer and/or returning students. Their ability to complete teaching programs depends on financial assistance. This amount could benefit 30 students per year at $500 each.

Diversity Experience EnhancementAccreditation requires that your pre-service teachers work with mentors, faculty, and students of diverse populations with greater ethnic, socioeconomic and linguistic differences. This amount would cover travel and accommodations for a two-day excursion for at least 50 students per semester. Young Readers Conference The Young Readers Conference features six nationally known children’s authors and illustrators and is hosted at FHSU every even-numbered year. Pre-service elementary teachers assist with each event, which brings in more than 600 third- through sixth-grade students as attendees. Author and illustrator fees, travel, and accommodations average $2,000 per au-thor per day.

Educator in Residence The Educator in Residence initiative would bring in educators from di-verse backgrounds to share their knowledge, expertise, and different perspectives with students. One Educator in Residence would be funded each semester.

Visiting Instructor The visiting instructor program would bring exemplary master teachers to campus for one year. This amount would fund three positions. These individuals would provide instruction and clinical support, and engage in research at three different levels: Pre K-3, K-6, and 6-12. Teacher Education candidates would benefit greatly from the expertise and modeling of mid-career master teachers.

Visiting ProfessorA visiting education professor from an accredited university would work as a faculty member for a semester. This individual would preferably be a professor who would enhance the diversity experiences for our students, which is a required component of accreditation. Professional Development Funds for CandidatesProfessional Development is a key component of a new teacher’s success. Each year, this funding could give at least 100 candidates the opportunity to attend conferences for science, mathematics, reading, social studies, diversity, and others.
