Two Long-time Members To Be Honored On All Saints’ Day This year, All Saints’ Sunday falls on November 1, in which the church honors those who have passed on the previous year. Our congregation lost two long-time members this year: Bob Lebsack and Waunita Van Thuyne. Bob passed away June 24, 2020 at the age of

92. Waunita, who was also 92, passed away on October 1, 2020. By Stu Boyd

Bob was raised in this church family and at-tended Sunday school as a youth in the old red-brick church at the corner of Fourth and Mountain. He joined the church as a teenager and in April celebrated 76 years of member-ship. Following a hitch in the Army and his marriage to Priscilla, he returned to his church and to Berthoud, where he farmed for decades. Bob taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and was a member of many church committees. He was one of the volunteers who worked hard to make this building a real-

ity in the 1950s, from fundraising to laying some of the floors and tile. Bob once said this church was an anchor in his life, and he did much to make it an anchor for the rest of us.

In April, Waunita cele-brated 25 years as a member of this congre-gation. She was a member of the UMW and Morning Glories circle and assisted with planning wedding receptions and prepar-ing meals for funeral dinners. As a valued member of the yarn and craft group, she made prayer shawls which are highly val-ued by those who re-ceived them. We miss Waunita’s warmth and friendliness; her acceptance of others because they were God’s children regardless of their race, religion, or sexual orientation; her frank and straightforward approach to life and her faith; and, of course, her infectious sense of humor.

The Name of Hope

There was a man who liked foreign travel. One day, he set out on a trip with his son. It was a great time. They en-joyed it together. At the end of their vacation, they decided to make a journey across the desert because they wanted to enjoy the adventure. For a while, they enjoyed the new ex-perience. However, they got into trouble when their car broke down, and they had to walk down the desert. It was horribly painful because the desert sand was hot as a fire-ball and they still had a long way to go. His son could not endure the hot sun and thirst anymore. The boy said to his father, “I cannot take even one step forward. I will die of thirst and exhaustion.” The father encouraged his son, “My dear, pluck up your courage. We can go through this terribly dangerous situation. If we carry on, we will find a village soon and we will be saved.” Although it was extremely hard, the father continuously cheered his son up.

However, they had to face the worst thing. They found a tomb. When the boy saw the tomb, he cried with fear. “Look at that father! It is a tomb. That person became exhausted like us and final-ly died. We will die, too.” He bent his head with disappointment. It looked like he had no hope. At that time, his father comforted him, “No, that is not true at all. The fact that the tomb is here means there is hope also. There should be a town not far from here because there could be no tomb if there are no people.” They walked and walked and finally found the small town and could return home safely. When the boy could not have hope because of the tomb, his father had hope. When the boy saw “death” with the tomb, the father saw “life” because he believed. That is why the father could encourage his son and could keep going.

When Jesus Christ died on the Cross, his followers including the disciples experienced despair and disappointment because they saw Jesus’ tomb. Although Jesus proclaimed “Resurrection,” they did not believe. Because they did not believe Jesus’ Resurrection, they could not have hope for victory. They were scattered. Their life with Jesus looked like a huge failure and they were re-garded as losers. However, after they met Jesus who had risen from the dead, they changed. They became witnesses of Jesus Christ. Although their circumstances did not change, they did not hide anymore. They were not frustrated anymore. They came out to the street and bravely shouted “Jesus Christ who is the son of the living God has risen. Believe Him.”

How about us? Through Jesus’ Cross, what kind of thing can we find? Is it the despair of death or hope of resurrection? Please believe Jesus Christ who died on the Cross resurrected and became our Lord. If we believe him as the Lord and Savior, we can see victory and hope when people see frustration and despair with Jesus’ Cross. Jesus clearly said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and who-ever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26) What is our answer? Apostle Paul tes-tified, “For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.” (Romans 8:24-25) What are we see-ing now? I pray we can believe Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior. I pray we can see hope with Jesus’ victory at any time and in any situation. Jesus Christ, he is our hope. Rev. KyeongSu Jung

Mark Patterson and Rudy Glick Stepping Down From Office

By Debbie Bunker

October 9, Mark Patterson announced that he will be stepping down as President of the BUMM, as will Rudy Glick as Treasurer. The men plan to meet on December 5 at 8:00 a.m. via Zoom (an invitation will be sent out prior to the meeting) to elect a new president and treas-urer. We thank them both for the many years of service they have devoted to the United Methodist Men’s Group. The following is an excerpt from an email Mark wrote to the group: “More than 15 years ago I took over the office of president; after Reverend Ray Scott de-cided to step down and asked for someone new to be president. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship, food and devotion time, as well as the contributions the Methodist Men have made to our church. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you’d like to be considered for

President or Treasurer, or have someone in mind that you think would be a good fit. I’m happy to share any resources I have or answer any questions you might have.” Mark also expressed his grati-tude to Ric Haskins, who has and will continue to lead the devotions at the breakfast meetings. All men are welcome and encouraged to get involved with the Berthoud United Methodist Men’s Group and the many activities they sponsor throughout the year. Don’t miss this important meeting on December 5!

Harvest Home Dinner Cancellation Brings Reflection of Past Years By Debbie Bunker

It is with great sorrow that the Berthoud United Methodist Men’s group announce that the annual Harvest Home Dinner will not take place this year. The Harvest Home dinner has been a part of the

church for over 60 years, and has brought in thousands of dol-lars to various funds within the church. The silent & live auction was added several years ago, bringing additional funding for the church, as well as a lot of fun! My prayer is that the photos from 2017-2019 will bring back fond memories of past Harvest Home Dinners and auctions; good food, fellowship with friends, and going home with a Christmas present or something for yourself from the auction!

If you are interested in being part of a current team or a recovery team, please email Ric Haskins at [email protected] to express your desire to be listed in either team, or both. Thank you for being a wonderful, caring community, and please continue to pray for the firefighters and those affected by the fires.

Ric Haskins, Mission Committee Chair

Hello, everyone! It’s been a long time! Living through the cur-rent global pandemic has been strange for all of us, I’m sure. I hope you have all been safe and in good health. As you can im-agine, the COVID-19 pandemic has put an abrupt halt to any plans we had as far as youth group is concerned. However, these kids have shown great resilience and a genuine belief that life will get back to normal sooner, ra-ther than later. I encourage you all to join the youth in their resolve to look towards the future with the same hope and confidence that we will make it through this tough time and come out the other end better than ever!

Thank you all for your support in these strangest of times,

Ruben Carrillo, Youth Coordinator
