    Introduction

    Preparing for field trip to Kings DominionGo over information students will need for the trip

    90 minutes

    AII/T.8 The student will recognize multiple representations of functions (linear,quadratic, absolute value, step, and exponential functions) and convert

    between a graph, a table, and symbolic form. A transformational approach to

    graphing will be employed through the use of graphing calculators.T.9 The student will identify, create, and solve practical problems involving triangles.

    Techniques will include using the trigonometric functions, the Pythagorean

    Theorem, the Law of Sines, and the Law of Cosines.

    Cognitive Objectives

    The students will understand the rules and regulations of the amusement park, the school,

    and the class itself in order to have a successful field trip. The students will practicegraphing linear and quadratic functions and using trigonometric functions in real world

    applications in order to use their skills on the trip.

    Materials, Technology and Advanced Preparation

    Video of the amusement park, field trip packets for each student

    Teaching and Learning Sequence

    Introduction/Anticipatory Set: As class settles down, instructor will show the video of

    Kings Dominion and hand out field trip packets, which include the rules. The instructorwill ask the students to guess what some of the rules might be for the park and theinstructor will write them on the white board, starring very important ones. Then she will

    show the students where in the packet they can find the rules and go over them with the

    students one more time, to ensure that they understand. Students will have the chance toask any questions they have about the rules or what will happen during the trip. This

    should take approximately 30-40 minutes.

    Lesson Development: The instructor then will have a packet of problems for the studentsto complete in small groups using the SOLs listed above and applying the problems to

    amusement park rides. The students also will have an opportunity to create their own

    problem and present it to the class. This should take another 30-40 minutes.

    Closure: The instructor will go over what to bring on the field trip one more time, in case

    the students did not completely understand the first time. The students will have anotheropportunity to ask any questions and tie up any loose ends for themselves.

    Assessment

    Formative: The instructor will judge how well students are comprehending directions forthe field trip by asking them to repeat rules and specific instructions for the trip and

    monitor which students are asking the most questions and which do not seem to be

    paying attention. The classwork will determine the students comprehension level of thematerial that will be covered on the trip and the teacher will have an opportunity to go

    over material that may be confusing to some students when walking around the room

    during the group work.

    Summative: The students will have an assignment to turn in after the field trip that will be

    graded based on effort and accuracy. The SOL material will be covered on a unit test.
