GLE 3.1 Write for a variety of purposes and to different audiences.GLE 3.2 Write in various modes and genres, including narration, literary response, personal expression, description, and imaginative.GLE 3.3 Know and apply the steps of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, evaluating, and publishing.

Objectives

The Learners Will (TLW) use information they learn from the Egyptian exhibit to create an original, non-fi ction newspaper about their fi eld trip. The class will work on individual assignments that will be brought together to create one fi nished product.

Introduction

Newspapers are printed every day in order to give people information about things that they didn’t experience themselves. What are some of the other things that newspapers do for us? (weather, important notices, upcoming events, et.) We are going to make our own class newspaper to tell the rest of the school about the fi eld trip we just went on.

Procedures

Have the class brainstorm on the different sections that are found in a newspaper. (News, lifestyles, entertainment, weather, politics, sports, editorials, and so on) Bring out a recent copy of a local newspaper to help with ideas.

Once the class is familiar with the parts of a newspaper begin to think about a newspaper in terms of the fi eld trip and start to eliminate any of the categories that might not apply:

News – The factual information about the fi eld trip and information presented in the exhibit (this should make up most of the paper) Weather – Discuss the weather on the day of the trip Traffi c – Describe the traffi c conditions during the bus trip Editorials – Allow the students to give their opinions on the displays Politics, Sports, Entertainment – use your best judgment

Procedures, cont.

The Teacher Will (TTW) divide the class up and give each student or group of students an assignment as reporters for the newspaper (and hand out press badges for the students to draw their picture and write their names on).

TLW work independently or in groups to complete their articles for the newspaper.

TTW act as the newspaper editor and collect and edit articles, returning any that need improvement or don’t meet the criteria for the assignment.

Once all of the articles are completed, the teacher (or a student assigned to the job) will enter the articles into the newspaper template attached to this lesson.

TTW print off the newspaper for the class to see.

Closing

Publish the fi nal copy of the newspaper and allow the students to post/distribute it where students from other classes or grades would be able to see it.

Materials

Newspaper template (as many copies of page 2 as needed to contain all the written material)

Notes to the Teacher

The articles may need to be held to a particular word limit based on the space you will dedicate to each one from the newspaper template.

Page 2 of the template can be copied as many times as needed to create all of the interior pages of the class newspaper.

As in a real newspaper, if you need more space than a particular text box provides for an article, the story can be continued on another page.

To use the template, simply highlight and erase the sample text from each box and type in the students’ articles. Pictures should be able to just copy and paste into the correct places.

You may want to assign the reporters’ jobs before the fi eld trip, so they can take notes during the trip with their articles in mind.

Possible Modifi cations

This activity could be expanded to include all classroom or school news along with the fi eld trip information.

You could have the students write mock newspaper articles from the point of view of ancient Egyptians about things that may have been happening in the daily lives of ancient Egyptians.

If typing and entering into the template is too time consuming, you could project and copy the newspaper template onto a larger sheet of butcher paper, and have the students hand write their articles into the correct places.
