MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

Dear Brothers and Sisters: For much of my youth I was an avid runner. My preferred race was the 10K or 6.2 miles. My brothers and sis-ters called me “motor man” because I could maintain a steady pace whether I was running on flat ground or an in-cline. I had learned early on that most runners begin a race at a fast clip but are not able to maintain their speed for very long before falling behind. Eventually due to a lack of oxygen they develop cramps and have to walk. It was then that I passed them with a reserve of en-ergy which enabled me to sprint toward the end of the race. The old saying “slow and steady wins the race “certainly is true. This memory came to my mind when meditating on Jesus parable in today’s gospel. If you recall there were two sons whose father asked them to go out in the vineyard and work. The first said “no” but eventually went. The sec-ond said “yes” but never went. “Which of the two did the father’s will,” Jesus asks. The chief priests and elders of the people responded, “The first.” They did not want to hear that sinners would en-ter the kingdom before them. There is nothing sadder than when someone starts out well but ends poorly, and there is nothing more won-derful than when someone starts out poorly but ends well. We all like a hap-py ending to a story but that can only happen if we save the best for last. May God help us all to imitate the Apostle Paul from the second reading who at the end of his life could say, “I have run the good race, I have won the crown.” Love and Prayers, Bro. John

Queridos hermanos,

Durante gran parte de mi juventud yo era un ávido corredor. Mi evento preferido era el de 10K o 6,2 millas. Mis hermanos y herma-nas me llamaban "el hombre motor" porque pude mantener un ritmo constante de si corría en tierra plana o en una cuesta. Aprendí pronto que la mayoría de los corredores comienzan una carrera a un ritmo rápido, pero no son ca-paces de mantener su velocidad por mucho tiempo antes de quedarse atrás. Finalmente, debido a la falta de oxígeno le dan calambres y tuvieron que caminar. Fue entonces cuando me los pasé con una reserva de energía que me permitió correr a toda velocidad hacia el final de la carrera. El viejo dicho "lento y constante gana la carrera" sin duda es cierto.

Este recuerdo me vino a la mente al meditar en la parábola de Jesús del evangelio de hoy. Se acordarán que había dos hijos cuyo padre les pidió salir a trabajar en el viñedo. El primero dijo que no, pero finalmente se fue. El segundo dijo que sí, pero nunca fue. "¿Cuál de los dos hizo la voluntad del padre?" Jesús pre-gunta. Los sumos sacerdotes y los ancianos del pueblo respondieron: "El primero." Ellos no quisieron oír que los pecadores entrarían en el reino de Dios antes que ellos.

No hay nada más triste que cuando al-guien comienza bien pero termina mal, y no hay nada más maravilloso que cuando alguien empieza mal pero termina bien. A todos nos gusta un final feliz de una historia, pero eso sólo puede suceder si guardamos lo mejor para el final. Que Dios nos ayude a todos a imitar al apóstol Pablo en la segunda lectura que al final de su vida pudo decir: "He corrido la buena carrera, he ganado la corona." NECESSARY REPETITION Spiritual teachers tend to repeat themselves, and to

repeat other teachers. Maybe there really aren’t that many different truths to tell. Just a lot of slow, sleepy human be-ings—like us—who need to hear the basics over and over. Consider today’s readings.

People complain that God isn’t “fair,” and Ezekiel answers that God is more than fair. People choose their own fates, and people can change. Even evildoers can turn, do right, and live. “Actions speak louder than words.” A fresh new insight? Hardly.

Paul tells the Philippians he would truly be encour-aged if those who claimed to be believers would, in fact, look to others’ interests and not their own. “The proof of the pud-ding is in the eating.” A novel idea? I don’t think so.

In Jesus’ story of the farmer and his sons, everyone knows the one who said he wouldn’t work—but did—is way ahead of the one who said he would work, but didn’t. “Talk is cheap.” Heard that before?

Los hábitos hacen al hombre La personalidad se forja con hábitos perfectivos

Suele decirse que «el hábito no hace al monje». Otros apos-tillan que no lo hace, pero lo viste y lo muestra, que no es

poco, pues también para eso es monje (Shakespeare dijo que el traje revela a la persona). Lo que nadie duda es que al

monje, al médico, al profesor, al artesano, al ciclista, al tra-bajador - cualquiera que sea su trabajo -, lo hacen más o me-nos perfecto, más o menos detestable, sus hábitos interiores,

los hábitos del alma, ciertamente más definitorios que los del vestir. El «maillot» amarillo no hace a Induráin penta-

campeón del Tour, sino las virtudes humanas. Hemos olvidado la función decisiva de las «hábitos íntimos» en la construcción de la personalidad. Me refiero a esos que residen en nuestras facultades de mayor rango, que nos ha-cen personas, hombres o mujeres, cabales: el entendimiento y la voluntad. El monje no puede, no debe tener el hábito de pensar frívolamente o de amar como un fresco. El monje, el

médico, el vendedor de lo que sea, el deportista, el sabio, han de crear hábitos intelectuales y morales que faciliten,

más aún, que hagan posible, el ejercicio siempre más perfec-to de sus responsabilidades. La verdad es que se puede mu-cho. Todos podemos mucho; mucho más de lo que cada uno

piensa de sí mismo. La personalidad se forja con hábitos perfectivos. Los clási-

cos han llamado a esos hábitos, «virtudes». Hemos olvidado el sentido y valor de la virtud. La palabra latina «virtus» procede de «vis», que significa fuerza, vigor. Se trata por

tanto de una capacidad, de un poder para la acción (interior o exterior) del que sin la virtud carecemos. La virtud es la más alta forma de haber (tener, poseer) en la cuenta de la personalidad, porque es un «tener» que da la posibilidad

«ser más» (más fuertes, más justos, más prudentes, más inte-ligentes, más señores de nosotros mismos...) Los hábitos

opuestos a los perfectivos, deterioran, dificultan, empobre-cen la persona y son lo que siempre se ha llamado «vicios». Los vicios impiden a la persona tener «personalidad», en el sentido más noble de la palabra. Por cierto que, como dice Gracián, «no se acreditan los vicios por hallarse en grandes sujetos, antes bien ofende más la mancha en el brocado que

en sayal» Una personalidad bien definida se forja a base de hábitos y

vale lo que valen éstos. El que tiene el hábito de la vagancia, es un vago; el que tiene el hábito del trabajo es laborioso. El primero es un desgraciado, el segundo es honorable y segu-

ramente bastante feliz. -3-
