Welcome toFiesta 2017

2017 Parade MarshalSteph Ross

Born an Army brat in Germany, I am very fortunate to have lived all over the world with my parents. Being an only child I had to learn to make friends, then in two years start over again. I would assume that was a good thing. Married to the love of my life in 1975, we met in

Ft. Knox, Kentucky where my dad was stationed at the time. He is a retired Army Vietnam Helicopter Pilot. We married in Michigan, where he finished college at Western Michigan University. Kalamazoo, Michigan was our home for over 30 years. My job there was Vice President of an insurance organization, which paid medical claims for large corporations, such as the Upjohn company, First of American Banks, and Stryker Corporation that self-funded their medical, life, accidental death, and dental. My job was to take care of the accounting, billings, and COBRA administration for these businesses. When we decided to retire from the work force we started looking for a place to live and settled on New Mexico, TorC. We moved here in 2005 and are so happy to be here. I have a small art business, which keeps me sane. I do art with Gourds and Clay and some painting. I have also been fortunate enough to be one of the founders of Sierra County Cancer Assistance, started in 2009. I along with our board and many volunteers gracious enough to give up their time to drive, have been able to help over 150 residents with cancer get to their appointments to Las Cruces, or Albuquerque. This is a non-profit, free service to them, and we pay our drivers gas money. Our community has kept us going for over 8 years by us doing fund raisers and private donations. We have made over 3,000 round trips, and driven over 500,000 miles in that period of time. We hope to give back to Sierra County in a way that will never be forgotten.

ANTONIO REYNATO PERFORM AT FIESTAIt would not be Sunday in the Park in TorC

without the intoxicating sound of mariachi music, and this year’s Fiesta promises to deliver the best there is. Renown New Mexico artist Antonio Reyna will be returning to TorC again

this year to perform on Sunday, May 7, in Ralph Edwards Park.A native of Gallup, Antonio was discovered

by and guided in his career by Nelson Martinez, former anchorman of KOAT-TV in Albuquerque. He performed for many years with Nelson, including numerous appearances at Geronimo Days in TorC. Those appearances made Antonio a favorite with locals here. Since those early days, Antonio has gone on in his solo career to win award after award, too many to try to mention. He is known world wide as one of the foremost singers alive today of Mariachi and Ranchera Music. One of Antonio’s most popular songs is “Volver” and that is what he continues to do, year after year. He loves coming back to TorC, and we all hope he continues to return

for a long time to come. Come out and spend Sunday with Antonio Reyna and celebrate Cinco de Mayo as he entertains with his beautiful Musica de Mejico.

Knifewing ReturnsTo 2017 FiestaKnifewing, a long time favorite for many years

at Geronimo Days, will be returning once again to TorC, much to the delight of his many fans. Knifewing will be performing on Saturday, May 6, in Ralph Edwards Park during the 2017 TorC Fiesta. He looks forward to visiting once again with the many friends he has made here over the past 20 years. Fifty-five million TV viewers witnessed the birth of a new sound in music when Knifewing and his Native American band were featured on national television. His music captures the essence of the Native American culture to take you to another world. Winner of the 1996 White Buffalo Award and the 1995 Native American Pioneer Award, Knifewing was also the 1995 Native American Male Vocalist of the year. Knifewing and his band have been highlighted in major events across the United States and Europe. This Native American song stylist blends traditional Native American music with a contemporary flair to bring you the sound of the future and the spirit of the past.

Native American Star Yolanda Martinez, long time favorite for many years at Geronimo Days, will return once again to TorC for this years’ Fiesta. Yolanda is a 4-time Nammy, Grammy Winner (Native American Music Award), 2-time ISMA Winner (Indian Summer Music Awards), International Performer, Singer, Song-writer. A native New Mexican from Calsbad she has traveled the world with her music and her drums that she creates.

Elvis/Owen FinleyFiesta EntertainmentThe persona of the King of Rock and Roll never

fades in the almost 40 years of his passing and with that small introduction, Fiesta guests will gather at Ralph Edwards Park Saturday, May 7, to watch Elvis (AKA Owen Finley) perform with style reminiscent of the Las Vegas style entertainer.Owen Finley, formerly currently resides in El

Paso, Texas with wife Karola. If you are looking for Elvis, Owen Finley fits

the bill, for his hair and sideburns are real along with a voice that is genuine. He features his performance on the 1970s

style of the great legend with songs that stay on top of the favorite list…his rendition of ‘Blue Suede Shoes, is awesome along with the repertoire of other oldies but goodies that will be entertaining.

Sawmill Canyon BandThis Bluegrass band is the latest project of Sierra County’s very own “Singing Sheriff”, Glenn Hamilton. During his travels to many of the regional Bluegrass Festivals, Glenn and wife Monika would often meet up with the members of this group for weekend jam sessions. These enthusiasts are among some of the finest Bluegrass musicians in the Southwest region and have a combined 50 plus years of experience playing in this genre. Sheriff Glenn Hamilton is an accomplished mandolin and guitar player and more than handles his share of the lead vocals. His influences range from the Stanley Brothers to Larry Sparks with an emphasis on the more traditional sound. Monika Hamilton, affectionately referred to as the “Heart Beat”, keeps the group in line on the Up-right Bass. Her award winning harmonies put the icing on the cake and are truly a delight to the ear. On Banjo is Las Cruces resident and retired

Lockhead-Martin “Rocket Scientist”, Kent Nelson. (Who said you have to be “cross-eyed and toothless” to play a Banjo?) He is one of the finest Banjo players in southern New Mexico and can play the styles of Ralph Stanley, Earl Scruggs and JD Crowe, all within the same song if necessary. In addition to his fine banjo pickin’, Kent will join in on the harmony line from time to

time and add that special something that can only be described as, “High-Lonesome Bluegrass”. He can often be seen playing in Las Cruces with many of the local Bluegrass musicians that the area holds. On “Dobro”, a California native who also calls Las Cruces his home, is “Jerry” Szostak. He gained his expertise on the California Bluegrass scene

Welcome to Fiesta 2017

RioBravoFineArt Gallery PresentsShae Consuelo Yaw May 13 - 31, 2017I am 19 years old and a 2016 HVHS graduate. I was born in Albuquerque, NM and raised in Hatch, NM. My family and I moved to Elephant Butte 6 years ago and this is when I began to

explore the world of art. In high school I took 2 semesters of art class and learned the different types of art techniques and the wide variety there is. I currently paint in Abstract, I have found this to be my medium. I also like watercolor, oils and pen/ink. I love how simple and beautiful abstract painting can be and I still have a world of art to explore. My inspirations come from things I like to do in everyday life, like cooking, music, reading, and nature. I am also exploring the different tools and materials one can use to create any type of art. I plan to attend NMSU in the fall to study Culinary Arts and possibly Drama/Acting. So I will indeed have a lot to learn in every type of Art possible, not only in painting but the art of acting, cooking, baking and cake décor. When I am not painting I make handcrafted jewelry, picture frames, and I have recently found wood burning/carving to be quite interesting. I feel very fortunate and blessed that I have found so many ways to be creative in this world. I thank God first and foremost, and my family...I am grateful and Thank them for always supporting and encouraging me to do whatever I set my mind to do. “When EXPLORING, there is no holding on, open your heart your mind and your soul and let the creativity begin”! ~ Shae C. Yaw

SAWMILLContinued fro mPage C9during the 80’s where he mentored a young Dobro player whom he affectionately referred to as, “Little Robbie”. Little Robbie has now grown up and is more commonly known as, Rob Ikes, 14-time IBMA Dobro player of the year. Jerry however didn’t teach Rob everything, he saves the best stuff for his current performances and can also be seen playing with many of the Las Cruces Bluegrass musicians as well. On guitar and vocals is Howard Blevins, a California native and now a resident of Whitesignal, New Mexico. Howard began playing professionally during the mid-70’s with his band, “The Cream of Kentucky” and later joined the team of Joe and Rick Vincent, the cousins of the “First lady of Bluegrass”, Rhonda Vincent. He is often referred to as the Bluegrass encyclopedia by the group and has forgetten more songs than most of us will ever know. If you are a fan of the traditional Bluegrass sound, then don’t miss this oportunity to hear Sawmill Canyon carry on the time-honored tradition that Bill Monroe began almost a century ago. Their intricate musicianship and tight harmonies will take you back to a more simple time in our nation’s history when a hard day’s work was finished off with the family gathering on the front porch to play the tunes Grandpa taught ‘em.
