Top Reasons to Invest In Fife

LocationWith Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen all within easy reach, companies located in Fife benefit from ready access to customers, suppliers, collaborators and a globally competitive talent pool.

Fife’s digital and logistical connectivity - via road, sea and air - is also excellent. For an overview of Fife’s logistical benefits and our key Investment Zones, see pages 28-29

Stunning coastlines, easy commutes, good public transport, top-class schools and great value residential properties combine to make Fife an attractive place to settle for employees and business owners alike.

For more on Fife’s great quality of life, see pages 26-27

WorkforceFife is within an hour’s drive for one million workers and has a higher percentage of people educated to NVQ4 level or above than anywhere else in the UK.

Existing business clusters mean our indigenous workforce has a strong profile of skills and expertise in areas including offshore oil and gas, marine renewable energy, light and heavy engineering, electronics, tourism and financial and customer services.

Support for InvestmentDiscretionary Regional Selective Assistance grants are available to companies creating jobs in some areas of Fife - the only region within the Edinburgh City Region to benefit from this level of support.

The Invest in Fife team is on hand to support you and has a proven track record of helping businesses realise their projects.

Education and TalentFife is home to the University of St Andrews and a further eight universities lie within an hour’s drive. Businesses in Fife have ready access to graduate talent across all disciplines and ample opportunities for research & development collaboration with Scotland’s top academic institutions.

Locally, Fife College delivers over 1000 courses, from introductory programmes to post-graduate studies, and is Scotland’s largest provider of engineering courses.

Co-ordinated Workforce DevelopmentIndustry and Fife Council work closely together to ensure our workforce can gain and maintain the skills and knowledge our employers need:

• The Whitlock Energy Collaboration Centre developed the UK’s first Wind Turbine Technician Modern Apprenticeship.

• The Fife Youth Job Contract is investing £5 million in apprentice ships from 2013-16.

• Opportunities Fife and engineering employers have established the Fife Engineering Academy and a rolling apprenticeship programme.

Land and PropertyFife has land and properties suited to all types of operations, from start-ups to major expansions and relocations.

Available properties include fully serviced office and industrial units and development land with outline planning permission for a variety of commercial uses.

All of Fife’s Investment Zones benefit from excellent access to road and public transport infrastructure and fibre-optic data networks.

For more details, see pages 6-7

Setup and Operating Costs Overheads in Fife are among the most competitive in Scotland and commercial rents, property sale values and business rates are lower than in other, nearby central belt locations.

Well-developed supply chains for many types of manufacturing and excellent communications by road, sea and air further help keep logistics’ costs to a minimum.

Green Business OperationsFife’s modern office and industrial units all have excellent energy efficiency profiles, while ongoing investment in renewable energy mean businesses here can benefit from becoming part of Scotland’s growing low-carbon economy.

4.8 ha Maintaining the supply of land for employmentScottish Enterprise and Fife Council entered into a joint venture to develop serviced employment land at two sites in Dunfermline – Dover Heights and Calais Muir.

Maintaining an immediately available supply of employment land plays a vital role in supporting business and investment growth and in assisting the development of Fife’s economy.

Fife Council is committed to re-investing all capital raised from the sale of land back into new infrastructure projects and the servicing of employment land.

Amazon’s decision to develop a 1,000,000 sq.ft. distribution centre at Dunfermline East - one of the largest Scottish inward investment projects of recent years - is a direct result of this joint venture.

Case Study

RWE npower renewables’ combined heat and power (CHP) plant is the biggest of its kind in the UK. Once fully operational, it will deliver up to 120 metric tonnes of industrial steam per hour and up to 65 MW of electricity.

The company recognised a strategic opportunity with Tullis Russell to provide steam and electricity for their Markinch paper mill from a renewable energy source, with a large surplus of power available for export to the National Grid.

Another factor was the presence of companies within Fife that could supply the right mix of skilled personnel, equipment and expertise needed to service the new plant.

Why Fife?RWE npower renewables recognised a strategic opportunity with papermaker Tullis Russell that compliments its own commitment to generating more electricity from clean, inexhaustible energy sources. The plant will also provide a major contribution to Scotland’s renewable energy targets.

There was also a good fit between RWE npower renewables and local Fife companies that provided an ideal mix of skilled people, equipment and expertise to service the CHP plant.

DiageoOver the past six years, Diageo has invested £430 million in distilling, packaging and warehousing in Fife.

Diageo, one of the world’s leading premium drinks businesses, is responsible for producing nearly 50 million cases of leading brands of Scotch whisky, white spirits and over six million cases of ready-to-drink brands every year. Trading in 180 markets around the world, Diageo’s portfolio of brands include: Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff, Tanqueray gin and Guinness.

In recent years, the drinks giant has invested over £100 million at its Cameronbridge Distillery in Fife, and now produces 480 million bottles of Scotch whisky and white spirits annually. Committed to sustainability, the company, in partnership with Dalkia, is constructing a state-of-the-art bio energy facility which will generate 80 per cent of the distillery’s electricity and 98 per cent of its steam. This investment has created the biggest distillery in Scotland.

The company has also invested £86 million at its Leven packaging facility opening a new bottling hall. The site employs around 1,100 people and produces 24 million cases of Scotch whisky and white spirits each year. Attached to the bottling hall is a £5.2 million luxury packaging area for Diageo’s widening range of Scotch whiskies.

Announced in 2012, Diageo’s latest investment at Cluny Warehouses, Kirkcaldy, complements increased production at its Cameronbridge Distillery and will see more than 276,000 sq.m of bonded warehouses built over the next seven years for the maturation of Scotch whisky.

Recent AnnouncementsOver the last ten years, Quaker has continually invested in its site in Cupar, spending £50 million to protect its heritage and grow the Quaker Oats business.

In order to meet the surge in consumer demand for porridge, Quaker invested £14.4 million in 2012 to increase the capacity of its Quaker Oats site at Cupar, doubling its manufacturing space. The expansion created 30 additional jobs.

QuakerOats

First produced in the USA in 1887, Quaker Oats became the very first registered trade mark for a breakfast cereal and has always been a popular choice with porridge fans.

In 2001 the company became a part of PepsiCo, the world’s second largest soft drink maker. Today Quaker sits alongside other leading household brands including Walkers, Pepsi and Tropicana.

SiteinCupar,FifeFrom its base in Fife, Quaker supplies porridge to the UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa. Quaker has been milling oats at this site since 1947 and supplies over 600 million servings of Quaker porridge to UK consumers every year.

Originally, there were only 30 workers at the facility and oat production was predominately in winter. Today there are 250 workers and the oat mill runs 24 hours a day, 360 days a year. This is due to an increase in the hot cereal market, which has grown by 30% over the past two years. The UK porridge market is now worth £157 million.

The futureQuaker will continue to focus heavily on sustainability and has plans to develop a biomass plant at its site in Cupar, which will burn unused husks from the oats to create steam and electricity to run the site.

Founded in 1982, the company, which is headquartered in Peterhead, em-ploys over 1400 people in 32 locations worldwide. Score Europe’s impressive customer list includes the majority of the world’s leading oil and gas operators.

As a company, Score is also committed to the growth and development of its employees and offers a range of highly acclaimed modern apprenticeships in engineering, with the opportunity to specialise.

Score Europe and FifeScore Europe’s operations in Fife commenced in 1984 when the company opened a specialist valve research and testing facility in Cowdenbeath. In March 2013 Score announced the creation of a £1.5 million logistical hub in Glenrothes, which will create 30 jobs over the next three years, with a strong emphasis on apprentice and career development opportunities. The 4000m2 hub will store, test and distribute valves to customers worldwide and complements facilities at the company’s headquarters in Peterhead, where one of the world’s largest stocks of valves is kept.

The new base will also reduce the number of miles travelled by each valve and this will in turn improve the company’s efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint.

Recent investments in tourism and leisure developments in St Andrews are well in excess of £40 million and the town attracts twice the Scottish average of international visitors.

Situated on the east coast of Fife, St Andrews is known worldwide as the official home of golf and has more than 500 years of golfing history. There are now 10 golf courses in and around the town, including several championship courses. The Old Course is a frequent venue for The Open Championship.

St Andrews is also home to one of the world’s greatest universities. Founded in 1413, it’s the third oldest in the English-speaking world (preceded only by Oxford and Cambridge)

and enjoys an international reputation for the quality of its teaching and research.

St Andrews remains one of Scotland’s most popular places to live in Scotland. The development strategy is to expand the town over the next 20 years to realise the potential of tourism and the University as economic drivers for Fife. The eastern expansion will see the addition of 1000 new houses and a 10 ha science and employment park over the next decades.
