RWE npower renewables’ combined heat and power (CHP) plant is the biggest of its kind in the UK. Once fully operational, it will deliver up to 120 metric tonnes of industrial steam per hour and up to 65 MW of electricity.
The company recognised a strategic opportunity with Tullis Russell to provide steam and electricity for their Markinch paper mill from a renewable energy source, with a large surplus of power available for export to the National Grid.
Another factor was the presence of companies within Fife that could supply the right mix of skilled personnel, equipment and expertise needed to service the new plant.
Why Fife?RWE npower renewables recognised a strategic opportunity with papermaker Tullis Russell that compliments its own commitment to generating more electricity from clean, inexhaustible energy sources. The plant will also provide a major contribution to Scotland’s renewable energy targets.
There was also a good fit between RWE npower renewables and local Fife companies that provided an ideal mix of skilled people, equipment and expertise to service the CHP plant.

DiageoOver the past six years, Diageo has invested £430 million in distilling, packaging and warehousing in Fife.
Diageo, one of the world’s leading premium drinks businesses, is responsible for producing nearly 50 million cases of leading brands of Scotch whisky, white spirits and over six million cases of ready-to-drink brands every year. Trading in 180 markets around the world, Diageo’s portfolio of brands include: Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff, Tanqueray gin and Guinness.
In recent years, the drinks giant has invested over £100 million at its Cameronbridge Distillery in Fife, and now produces 480 million bottles of Scotch whisky and white spirits annually. Committed to sustainability, the company, in partnership with Dalkia, is constructing a state-of-the-art bio energy facility which will generate 80 per cent of the distillery’s electricity and 98 per cent of its steam. This investment has created the biggest distillery in Scotland.
The company has also invested £86 million at its Leven packaging facility opening a new bottling hall. The site employs around 1,100 people and produces 24 million cases of Scotch whisky and white spirits each year. Attached to the bottling hall is a £5.2 million luxury packaging area for Diageo’s widening range of Scotch whiskies.
Announced in 2012, Diageo’s latest investment at Cluny Warehouses, Kirkcaldy, complements increased production at its Cameronbridge Distillery and will see more than 276,000 sq.m of bonded warehouses built over the next seven years for the maturation of Scotch whisky.

Recent AnnouncementsOver the last ten years, Quaker has continually invested in its site in Cupar, spending £50 million to protect its heritage and grow the Quaker Oats business.
In order to meet the surge in consumer demand for porridge, Quaker invested £14.4 million in 2012 to increase the capacity of its Quaker Oats site at Cupar, doubling its manufacturing space. The expansion created 30 additional jobs.
QuakerOats
First produced in the USA in 1887, Quaker Oats became the very first registered trade mark for a breakfast cereal and has always been a popular choice with porridge fans.
In 2001 the company became a part of PepsiCo, the world’s second largest soft drink maker. Today Quaker sits alongside other leading household brands including Walkers, Pepsi and Tropicana.
SiteinCupar,FifeFrom its base in Fife, Quaker supplies porridge to the UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa. Quaker has been milling oats at this site since 1947 and supplies over 600 million servings of Quaker porridge to UK consumers every year.
Originally, there were only 30 workers at the facility and oat production was predominately in winter. Today there are 250 workers and the oat mill runs 24 hours a day, 360 days a year. This is due to an increase in the hot cereal market, which has grown by 30% over the past two years. The UK porridge market is now worth £157 million.

Score EuropeSCORE (Europe), a subsidiary of Score Group plc Limited, is renowned as a world leader in the supply, service and repair of valves, gas turbines and related components for the oil, gas and energy markets. Founded in 1982, the company, which is headquartered in Peterhead, em-ploys over 1400 people in 32 locations worldwide. Score Europe’s impressive customer list includes the majority of the world’s leading oil and gas operators.
As a company, Score is also committed to the growth and development of its employees and offers a range of highly acclaimed modern apprenticeships in engineering, with the opportunity to specialise.
Score Europe and FifeScore Europe’s operations in Fife commenced in 1984 when the company opened a specialist valve research and testing facility in Cowdenbeath. In March 2013 Score announced the creation of a £1.5 million logistical hub in Glenrothes, which will create 30 jobs over the next three years, with a strong emphasis on apprentice and career development opportunities. The 4000m2 hub will store, test and distribute valves to customers worldwide and complements facilities at the company’s headquarters in Peterhead, where one of the world’s largest stocks of valves is kept.
The new base will also reduce the number of miles travelled by each valve and this will in turn improve the company’s efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint.

Recent investments in tourism and leisure developments in St Andrews are well in excess of £40 million and the town attracts twice the Scottish average of international visitors.
Situated on the east coast of Fife, St Andrews is known worldwide as the official home of golf and has more than 500 years of golfing history. There are now 10 golf courses in and around the town, including several championship courses. The Old Course is a frequent venue for The Open Championship.
St Andrews is also home to one of the world’s greatest universities. Founded in 1413, it’s the third oldest in the English-speaking world (preceded only by Oxford and Cambridge)
and enjoys an international reputation for the quality of its teaching and research.
St Andrews remains one of Scotland’s most popular places to live in Scotland. The development strategy is to expand the town over the next 20 years to realise the potential of tourism and the University as economic drivers for Fife. The eastern expansion will see the addition of 1000 new houses and a 10 ha science and employment park over the next decades.
