Saints This Week Tuesday, July 18

Saint Camillus De Lellis established the Order of Clerks Regular, Ministers of the Infirm, also known as the Camillians. A priest, he is the patron saint of the sick, hospitals, nurses and physicians.

Thursday, July 20

Saint Apollinarius was a native of Antioch in Syria. As the first Bishop of Ra-venna, he faced nearly con-stant persecution. During the persecutions of Nero, he was identified as a leader, arrested, tortured and mar-tyred by being run through with a sword.

Friday, July 21

Saint Lawrence of Brin-disi, was priest of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, and a theolo-gian. He served as Vicar General of the Capuchin friars and as Papal Nun-cio to Bavaria and Spain. Pope John XXIII de-clared him a Doctor of the Church in 1959.

We are SO CLOSE! This year, Saint Albert’s

CSA goal remains unchanged from last year at

$109,415.41. For many reasons, this year it is

especially urgent that we reach and, God

willing, exceed our goal sooner rather than

later. Please help us in reaching our goal!

As of June 30, 2017:

2017 Goal: $109,415.41

Pledged: $108,725.50 (99.4%)

Still Needed: ($689.91) (.006%)

As you can see, we are almost there! So, if you

have yet to make your pledge, please consider

doing so as soon as possible.

Thank you and God bless you for your

generosity and support.

Pray for Vocations

What kinds of people become priests, sisters or brothers?

Are they uncommonly holy, unusually

saint-like? No. They are people who make

mistakes, people who aren’t afraid to be

human while in God’s service.

Are they people who can’t face the

competition and cruelty of the “real”

world? No. They are people who believe that through

ministry they can immerse themselves in the world and make positive

changes.

Are they people who don’t relate well with other people? No. They are

people who love others — people who find real satisfaction chatting with a

93-year-old parishioner, holding the hand of a cancer patient, listening to the

troubles of a streetwise teen.

They are people with the courage to touch lives, hearts and souls in a high-

tech, unchurched world. Are you that kind of person?

Serra for priestly and religious vocations

A vocation must be nurtured for a lifetime, not just until

ordination or the taking of vows. You can help nurture the vocations of

priests, sisters and brothers by praying, listening, and expressing

appreciation. A life of service needs support from those served.

We currently have pledges totaling $134,894 from 62 parishioners. Our parish goal is $734,189 over 3 years.

Important points:

• All funds collected by the Campaign are invested and managed by the Catholic Community Foundation.

• The Campaign seeks to raise $7 million for an Endowment Fund for ministries and vocations. The $7 million principal will remain intact and only the interest and dividends used to fund budget shortfalls for ministries. By establishing an endowment fund, we are preparing a solid foundation for the diocese, our children and grandchildren, for many years to come.

• If the Diocese were to continue to draw down its financial reserves at the present rate, it would face a financial crisis in 5 to 7 years.

• The CSA only funds a portion of the ministry and vocation programs, the shortfall historically covered by Diocesan sav-ings or parish assessments. While seminarians and diaconate candidates pay a portion of their programs, much assis-tance is still provided to recruit candidates.

• With the withdrawal of the Franciscans from the Cathedral next July, the diocese needs to encourage, recruit and fund as many seminarians as is feasible. The diocese has NEVER had the number of young men in formation as we have now and we need to be able to continue this level of engagement.

• We are now in the 8th week of the 12 week campaign, which ends August 20. We would like to achieve at least 50 per-cent of parishioner pledge cards being submitted by end of July.

TOGETHER, WE CAN DO THIS!!!

***For those who have received a receipt or acknowledgement of their pledge, we apologize for the incorrect letterhead. These were mistakenly printed on the CSA letterhead. This will be corrected next month***

Thank you for your

generous support!

This is a four-year program, and participants may attend any or all of the four years. The first

two years of the CBS program focus on the biblical books that form the foundation of both the

bible, emphasizing their contexts and principle themes. While starting at the beginning of the

four-year cycle is encouraged, a student can join the program at any point.

items are pre-cooked and can be eaten directly

from the can if necessary. I am trying to figure

out how to package these items in something

other than a brown paper lunch bag since I like to

put several items in this bag for a complete day

of food and the lunch bags aren’t big or sturdy enough to hold

everything. If you have any ideas please let

me know.

Those in need are so grateful for your gifts

of non-perishable food, clothing, and

toiletries.

Thank you for all you do for those in need

and may God bless you.

Deacon’s Outreach What Of The Soul?: The powers of the spirit

W hat of the soul? Its ethereal existence so

frustrates our insatiable appetite to know

of it. What qualities does it possess? What

powers?

Thomas Aquinas taught that the seat of our intellect

and will resides within the human soul. The intellect

enables us to think of universal concepts, such as mercy

and justice and abstract mathematics. With our will, we

are able to act on abstract principles. Aquinas reasoned

that because abstract concepts are thoughts unrelated to

particular things, the intellect could not be material. Thus,

he posited, the intellect and will must be immaterial

powers of the soul; powers facilitated by matter, not

caused by it.
