Today we will use these mathematical practices:

5.MP.1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. (Never give up!)

5.MP.5, Use appropriate tools strategically.

5.MP.8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Key Vocabulary

Expression- a combination of numbers, variables, and/or operations

Ex. 2+3

2+9x3

B+5

Order of Operations- a set of rules for evaluating an expression with more than one operation

Page 4: Fifth-Grade Common Core Math Operations and Algebraic Thinking 5.OA.1. Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions

First let’s review:Order of OperationsP-Parentheses- This also includes bracesand brackets.E-Exponents

M/D-Multiply or divide depending on whatcomes first from left to right. A/S-Add or subtract depending on whatcomes first from left to right.

Let’s practice:Take out your white board.

1. 4 – 9 ÷ 3 -1 = 1

2. 2 + ( 3 X 6 ) +10= 30

3. 18 - 3 ÷ 3 + (63 ÷ 3) – 6 = 32

Page 6: Fifth-Grade Common Core Math Operations and Algebraic Thinking 5.OA.1. Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions

. Examples:1. (26 + 18) ÷ 4 2. { [2 X (3+5)] - 9} + [5 x (23-18)]3. 12 – (0.4 x 2)

Answers:1. 112. 323. 11.2

Circle the operation you would do first in red. 1. 24 x ( 3 + 6) -16 2. [ 36 + (2 x 5)] ÷ 2 3. 2 + 6 ÷ 2 x 4

Word problemsA teacher has to buy supplies for her class. She buys each of her 24 students a box of crayons for $0.50 each, a pair of scissors for $1.50, and a spiral notebook for $0.25. How much does it cost for her to buy all of these items? Use one expression to solve.

Answers24 x [ 0.25 + (0.50 + 1.50)]24 x [ 0.25 + 2.00]24 x 2.25 =$54.00
