FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - FEBURARY 7th
Please remember in your prayers all
the sick of the parish and of our
families.
Dear Parishioners,
This Sunday is our last Sunday in the season of Ordinary Time with the holy season of Lent beginning this Week with Ash Wednesday. The Priest says to us as he signs us with ashes, “Remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return”. As Catholics we bear the mark of ashes on our foreheads reminding us of our mortality and that we are sinners. In Sacred Scripture we read of numerous individuals who after sinning against the Lord repented of their wrongdoing and put on sackcloth and ashes. The ashes during Lent remind us of our sinfulness and the need to repent so that we can receive the Lord’s mercy. For us Catholics, “Individual and integral confession of grave sins followed by absolution remains the only ordinary means of reconciliation with God and the Church” (CCC 1497). The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us that, “each of the faithful is bound by an obligation faithfully to confess serious sins at least once a year” (1457). And, “Without being strictly necessary, confession of everyday faults (venial sins) is nevertheless strongly recommended by the Church.” (1458). The Sacrament of Reconciliation, a healing sacrament, is a wonderful way to begin Lent.
In our first reading today the Prophet Isaiah feared for his life because he had a vision of the Lord. “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips, yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” Isaiah feared for his life because no one can see God and live. Isaiah recognized that he was in the presence of the divine and was unfit to be there because he was a sinner. One of the angels flew to him and touched his mouth with an ember taken from the Lord’s altar that purged him of his wickedness and sin.
In our Gospel today from St. Luke, Peter was seized with fear over the large catch of fish. He was out fishing all night and caught nothing but when Jesus told him to go out again into the deep and lower his nets; the nets were tearing because of the abundance of fish they caught. Peter recognized that this was the work of God and fell at the knees of Jesus saying, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man”. Jesus assured him not to be afraid even though he too was in the presence of God. Both Isaiah and St. Peter had encounters with the divine and both feared because they recognized that they were not all good and perfect but rather they were sinners.
Isaiah in his vision heard the voice of the Lord say to him, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us? (Isaiah replied) Here I am, I said; send me!” In the Gospel today, “Jesus said to Simon, ‘Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.’ When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.”
In our season of Lent we too must recognize who we are before God, that is, we are all sinners. None of us are worthy to be in his presence yet he makes us worthy through the Blood of his Cross. The graces that he won for us through his Death and Resurrection are poured out to us at Baptism where we are made right before God. Lent is a time where we recognize the need to turn away from sin and to turn towards our Lord who loves us so much that he died for us. It is time of grace where God reminds us not to be afraid and to follow him. Lent is a special time for us to be more aware of the presence of God in our lives. The Church gives us the three traditions of Lent: prayer, almsgiving, and fasting; they are tools handed to us so that we can open ourselves to the grace upon grace that our Lord wants us to have so that we can respond to his call to follow him and one day stand in his presence in the kingdom of Heaven.

Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe
Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in
Latin America. In Peru, the 14 villages of Chazuta, in
Moyobamba, are all located away from the city center, with
the most remote only accessible by boat. The faithful in
these communities do not have access to catechetical
formation, and members often feel separated from the life
of the universal Church. Through a grant from the Collection
for the Church in Latin America, the religious congregation of
the Missionaries of Jesus was able to provide faith
formation, spiritual retreats, and workshops to nearly 250
people. Upon completion, participants were better equipped
to help others deepen their faith and answer questions. The
program also renewed their sense of commitment to their
parishes and created stronger bonds within their own
families. Through this program, members of the Chazuta
villages felt the love and support of the universal Church.
Please support programs like these and give generously in
next week’s collection. For more information, please visit

Catechism of the Catholic Church
The Precepts of the Church
2042 The first precept (“You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor”) requires the faithful to sanctify the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord as well as the principal liturgical feasts honoring the mysteries of the Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the saints; in the first place, by participating in the Eucharistic celebration, in which the Christian community is gathered, and by resting from those works and activities which could impede such a sanctification of these days.
The second precept (“You shall confess your sins at least once a year.”) ensures preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation, which continues Baptism’s work of conversion and forgiveness.
The third precept (“You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season”) guarantees as a minimum the reception of the Lord’s Body and Blood in connection with the Paschal feasts, the origin and center of the Christian liturgy.
2043 The fourth precept (“You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church”) ensures the times of ascesis and penance which prepare us for the liturgical feasts and help us acquire mastery over our instincts and freedom of heart.
The fifth precept (“You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church”) means that the faithful are obliged to assist with the material needs of the Church, each according to his own ability. The faithful also have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to his abilities.
Lenten Regulations on Fast and Abstinence
The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.
On a day of fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast.
On a day of abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. The obligation to observe the laws of fast and abstinence “substantially,” or as a whole, is a serious obligation.
The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty) – All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year) extends from the First Sunday of Lent to the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity.
