Why the Ten Commandments?

Land-on Faith

by Landon DePasquale, Director of New Evangelization

Over the past two weeks, we have tried to determine how

the Old Testament applies to us today. We distinguished

between laws and rules that were given to ancient Israel for

their particular time and place and those that are universal,

like the Ten Commandments. We also looked at how we

decide which is which, by following the teaching of Jesus

and the Apostles and looking to the Church to see which

laws still apply and which were truly bound by time and

culture.

So why do the Ten Commandments still matter today?

When Jesus was here on earth, he was asked what the

greatest commandment was in the law. He responded: “You

shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all

your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first

commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your

neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend

all the law and the prophets.” If this is the case, why do we

focus so much on the Ten Commandments? Why do

examinations of conscience use them? Why is our

Catechism ordered around them?

When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was

in the law, he summed up the entirety of both the Old and

New Testament. Yet, if we look at the writings of the New

Testament, the writings of the Fathers, and the teaching of

the Church, we never see a mere rote regurgitation of the

two commandments of Christ. To be sure, St. Peter, St. Paul,

and the rest teach those two greatest commandments, but

they also make an important step after that: they tell us how

to love God for his own sake and neighbor for the sake of

God. Throughout the New Testament, we are given

examples of how we ought to live, and what we should

avoid, if we truly want to love God and neighbor. When we

look at how to practice these two commandments in our

everyday lives, the Ten Commandments are a necessary

guide. They give us particular ways that we can love God

and our neighbors that aren’t just for a particular time and

place, but are for any human at any time. Should our world

survive another 2,000 years, the Ten Commandments will

be just as applicable then as they are now, and as they were

2,000 years ago when Jesus came.

Over the coming weeks, I want to look at each

commandment in detail. While some are easily applied to

our everyday lives, others may not be as obvious.

April 28

St. Louis de

Montfort (1673-1716) Born in the Breton village of Montfort, Louis was educated by the Jesuits and the Sulpicians, he was ordained as a diocesan priest in 1700. Soon he began preaching

parish missions throughout western France. His years of ministering to the poor prompted him to travel and live very simply, sometimes getting him into trouble with Church authorities. In his preaching, which attracted thousands of people back to the faith, Father Louis recommended frequent, even daily, Holy Communion (not the custom then!) and imitation of the Virgin Mary's ongoing acceptance of God's will for her life.

April 29

St. Catherine

of Siena

(1347-1380) She was the 23rd child of Jacopo and Lapa Benincasa and grew up as an intelligent, cheerful and intensely religious person. She entered the Dominican Third Order at 18 and spent the next three years

in seclusion, prayer and austerity. Her public influence reached great heights because of her evident holiness, her membership in the Dominican Third Order, and the deep impression she made on the pope. She worked tirelessly for the crusade against the Turks and for peace between Florence and the pope

In 1378, the Great Schism began, splitting the allegiance of Christendom between two, then three, popes and putting even saints on opposing sides. Catherine spent the last two years of her life in Rome, in prayer and pleading on behalf of the cause of Urban VI and the unity of the Church.

April 30

St. Pius V

(1504-1572) Pius V was elected in 1566 and was charged with the task of implementing the sweeping reforms called for by the Council of Trent. He ordered the founding of seminaries for the proper training of priests. He published a new missal, a new breviary, a new catechism and established the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) classes for the young. Pius zealously enforced legislation against abuses in the Church. He patiently served the sick and the poor by building hospitals, providing food for the hungry and giving money customarily used for the papal banquets to poor Roman converts. Pius's ceaseless papal quest for a renewal of the Church was grounded in his personal life as a Dominican friar. He spent long hours with his God in prayer, fasted rigorously, deprived himself of many customary papal luxuries.

April 28

St. Gianna

Beretta Molla

(1922-1962) An active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Gianna earned degrees in medicine and surgery from the Universi-ty of Pavia and eventually opened a clinic in Mesero. Gianna also enjoyed skiing and mountain climbing. Early in her fourth pregnancy, doctors discovered a tumor in her uterus. Gianna allowed the surgeons to remove the tumor but not to perform the recommended hysterecto-my, which would have killed the child. Seven months later, Gianna Emanuela Molla was born. The following week, her mother Gianna died from complications.
