From the From the From the From the Deacon's LaptopDeacon's LaptopDeacon's LaptopDeacon's Laptop:::: Sacraments

As we continue this “Year of Faith” and the presentation of the second part of the Catechism, the reading for this

weekend from Revelations reminds us that “God’s dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them

and they will be his people and God himself will always be with them as their God.” (Rev 21: 3) This becomes a

reality and is realized, in part, through the Sacraments of the Church. The Sacraments, instituted by Christ and

entrusted to the Church, are efficacious signs of grace perceptible to the senses. Through them, divine life is

bestowed upon us. The mysteries of Christ’s life are the foundations of what He would henceforth dispense in

the Sacraments, through the ministers of his Church. “What was visible in our Savior has passed over into his

mysteries.” (Saint Leo the Great)

Christ has entrusted the Sacraments to his Church. They are the "Sacraments of the Church” in a twofold sense:

they are “from her” insofar as they are actions of the Church, which are the Sacraments of Christ’s action; and

they are “for her” insofar as they build up the Church.

The Sacraments not only presuppose faith but, with words and ritual elements, they nourish, strengthen, and

express it. By celebrating the Sacraments the Church professes the faith that comes from the apostles. The

Sacraments are efficacious ex opere operato (“by the very fact that the Sacramental action is performed”)

because it is Christ who acts in the Sacraments and communicates the grace they signify.

For believers in Christ, the Sacraments, even if they are not all given to each of the faithful, are necessary for

salvation because they confer Sacramental grace, forgiveness of sins, adoption as children of God, conformation

to Christ the Lord, and membership in the Church. The Holy Spirit heals and transforms those who receive the

Sacraments.

There are seven Sacraments that are divided into 3 groups:

1. the Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist;

2. the Sacraments of Healing – Penance, and Anointing of the Sick; and

3. the Sacraments of Vocations – Holy Orders, and Matrimony.

In the next seven weeks each of these will be covered in depth to include the form, elements, ministers, and

grace of the Sacraments.

Heavenly Father as you come to dwell within us,

let the Sacraments of the Church lead us home to eternal life.

Amen

There are four degrees to the Knights of Columbus. The

first is Charity, the second Unity, the third Fraternity and

the fourth Patriotism.

Patriotism is the visual arm of the Knights of

Columbus. When you see His Holiness the Pope, as well

as any Patriotic event or funerals for Fourth Degree

members, you will see the Sir Knights in full ‘Regalia’ of

tuxedos, capes, plumed chapeaus, and swords. The

capes and plumes of different colors signify the different

rankings among the Fourth Degree. You will see red for

non ranking officers, white for Faithful Navigators,

purple for Commanders, green for Associate Marshal,

gold for Master of the Fourth Degree and light blue for

Supreme District Representative. All these colors are the

same status as if you were in service from the lowest

private to general.

To become a Fourth Degree Knight you first

have to be a Third Degree in good standing with your

council. This is accomplished by keeping your dues

current and the approval of the Council’s Financial

Secretary.

As a member of the Fourth Degree you will be a

member of an Assembly. The Assembly is made up of

three or more councils with the ranking order the same

as your council. Instead of the Grand Knight the top man

is the Faithful Navigator, Deputy Grand Knight is Faithful

Captain and so on down the line. They have their own

rules and by-laws not unlike the council.

Even though a member reaches full Knighthood

at the Third Degree, it’s the Fourth Degree that is

noticed at all official functions, parades, and

ceremonies. Of the more than the 1.8 million members

of the Knights of Columbus over 900,000 of them belong

to the elite Fourth Degree.
