TODAY is the fifth Sunday in the Season of Lent, a time of renewal and preparation for the Paschal Triduum (the "three days" from Maundy Thursday through the Easter Vigil) in which we celebrate our redemption in the cross and resurrection of Jesus. The series of Old Testament readings for this season develop the theme of God’s covenants: with humanity through Noah, with Abraham, with Israel, and ultimately the new covenant in Christ. The other readings also move towards our Paschal celebration. FIRST READING: Jeremiah 31:31-34: At a time in Israel’s life when they had shattered the covenant by adopting the gods and values of the people around them, when the city of Jerusalem and the temple had been destroyed and the royal family executed by the Babylonians, Jeremiah announces a message from God with the dramatic language that God would establish a new covenant with his people. Out of the shattered remains of a faithless people God himself will create a new Israel, where the hearts of the people were wholly devoted to God and the desire to do the will of God is written in every human heart. PSALMODY: Psalm 119:9-16: Psalm 119 is a lengthy acrostic poem; the 8 lines in each stanza begin with the same letter of the Hebrew alphabet, giving a sense of completeness, from “A” to “Z”. The psalm celebrates the treasure of the Torah, the revelation of God’s grace and will for our lives given in the scriptures. SECOND READING: Hebrews 5:5-10: The book of Hebrews is an exposition of the scriptures (what we know as the Old Testament) in defense of the Christian proclamation of Jesus crucified and risen. The author here identifies Jesus as the one of whom the psalms speak and who, through his suffering and death, has become our salvation – both priest and victim in the supreme atoning sacrifice that need never be repeated. GOSPEL: John 12:20-33: The appearance of gentiles wanting to see Jesus reveals that the decisive hour has come when Jesus is exalted on the cross for all nations to see and be healed. In John’s Gospel Jesus’ death upon the cross is the judgment day for the world, for our response to this work of God reveals the truth of our lives – whether we are children of the day or of the night. It is also the judgment day for Satan who arrogantly strides the earth for on this day his power is shattered and his reign of terror brought to an end.

Lessons for next week: Isaiah 50:4-9; Psalm 31:9-16; Philippians 2:5-11; Mark 14:1-15:47

HOLY COMMUNION Prelude: “Fugue in C Major” (J.S. Bach) Erika Gutekunst, Organ “Aria (J.S. Bach) Jin-Kyung Lim, Organ

Welcome and Announcements Please stand as you are able.

Confession and Forgiveness The service begins at the font, for it is in Baptism we have begun our life in Christ and received the promise of forgiveness. The presiding minister leads the congregation in the invocation. The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.

P In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen

P Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins.

C His mercy endures forever.

P Dear brothers and sisters, when our Lord Jesus was asked what is the most important commandment, he said,

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' 38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'” (Matthew 22:37-39)

Mindful of Jesus’ command, and trusting in God’s mercy, let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Silence for reflection and self-examination.

P O LORD, hear my prayer,

C Listen to my cry for mercy.

a We acknowledge before you, O God, the hold sin has on our lives and the thoughts, words and deeds that betray you and harm others and ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, forgive us, renew us, and guide us, that we may be ever faithful to your word and your reign of grace. Amen

P God who is rich in mercy hears the cry of the repentant heart and grants us forgiveness. In Christ Jesus, who “was wounded for our transgressions,” and “bruised for our iniquities,”(Isaiah 53:5

RSV) God has washed away our sins that we might walk in newness of life (Romans 6:4). Our sins can no longer accuse or condemn us. Christ has carried them to the cross and left them in the tomb. You are free. Live in Peace. Serve the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Kyrie and Prayer of the Day

A In peace, let us pray to the Lord, after each petition the congregation responds:

C

A For the reign of God in our lives and in our world, For peace and justice among the nations, for the well-being of all people, let us pray to the Lord. (sung response)

A For your people gathered here and your church throughout the world, for courage to trust your promise, for strength to live your Word, let us pray to the Lord. (sung response)

P Almighty God, Holy and longsuffering, in your Son, Jesus, you laid down your life for the world, that in him all people might be drawn to you. Set our eyes fully on Christ crucified and risen, that in him we might know the fullness of your love; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen Please be seated.

he days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel

and the house of Judah. 32It will not be like the covenant that I made with their

ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt -- a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the

house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34No longer shall they teach one another,

or say to each other, "Know the LORD," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

Psalmody: Psalm 119:9-16 Congregation reads the bold print responsively.

With my whole heart I seek you; do not let me stray from your commandments.

11I treasure your word in my heart, so that I may not sin against you.

12Blessed are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes.

13With my lips I declare all the ordinances of your mouth.

14I delight in the way of your decrees as much as in all riches.

15I will meditate on your precepts, and fix my eyes on your ways.

16I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.

o also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to

him, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you"; 6as he says also in another place, "You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek."

7In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save

him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; 9and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, 10having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Please stand as you are able.

Gospel Verse: Joel 2:13

Reading: John 12:20-33

ow among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. 21They came to Philip,

who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus."

22Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.

27"Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say -- 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." 29The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him."

30Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. 31Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." 33He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

Hymn: “Once He Came in Blessing” Green Hymnal #312

WE RESPOND TO THE WORD WITH LIVES OF FAITH

THE RITE OF HOLY BAPTISM The baptismal font is filled with water and the candidate comes forward.

P Dear brothers and sisters, when the Ethiopian Eunuch heard the good news of Jesus from Philip along the desert road, he said to him “’Look, here is water, what is to prevent me from being baptized?’ … Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.” (Acts 8:36-38) And the scripture says that the eunuch “went on his way rejoicing.”

We gather with joy today to celebrate the baptism of William Lane Caster.

Lane, in Paul’s letter to the Christians in Rome he writes Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. (Romans 6:3-5)

The water of Holy Baptism reminds us of all the ways in which God has used water to bring salvation, healing and life.

The Word of God, which is joined with this water, promises us that here we are united with Christ and all his riches. Though we are born children of a fallen humanity, by the waters of our baptism we are reborn as children of God. Though we are born under the shadow of sin and death, we are here brought under the reign of Grace and Life.

Is it your desire to receive this sacrament of Holy Baptism and all that Christ gives?

R I do.

P Do you renounce the devil – the power of evil – and all his works and all his ways?

R I do.

P Do you believe in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

R I do.

The Blessing of the Water

P Let us pray. Gracious God, we give you thanks for the many ways you have used water as a sign of your saving work.

In the beginning your Spirit moved over the face of the great deep and you brought to life all living things.

At the time of Noah, the waters judged a corrupted world and carried Noah to a new beginning.

You led Israel through the waters of the Red Sea out from slavery into freedom. In the waters of the Jordan River, Namaan, the Syrian, was healed and restored And in his baptism by John, Jesus was anointed by your Spirit. Now you have promised that in the waters of this font

You will put your name upon Lane uniting him with your Son Jesus, clothing him in Christ’s mercy and life, filling him with your Spirit and sending him as your servant into the world.

Send forth your Holy Spirit that by this water and your word you may grant Lane faith to trust your promise and to live in your Spirit.

C Amen

P William Lane Caster, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

The pastor lays his hands on the head of the newly baptized.

P By your grace, O God, and according to your promise, pour out on your servant Lane your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence. (Isaiah 11:2) Strengthen him in faith, renew him in love, sustain him in trials, and empower him in service; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

C Amen The pastor marks the sign of the cross on the forehead of the baptized with the Chrism, the baptismal oil.

P Lane, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever.

A candle, lit from the Paschal Candle, is presented.

A “Let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

THE RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS

A The following people have expressed their desire to join this congregation in our life and ministry (their names are read)

P Dear friends, I invite you to join with us in confessing our faith in Christ Jesus, the faith in which you were baptized.

P Do you believe in God the Father?

C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

P Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

Page 11: FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT - losaltoslutheran.org · 2 TODAY is the fifth Sunday in the Season of Lent, a time of renewal and preparation for the Paschal Triduum (the "three days" from

He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

P Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

The minister addresses those joining the congregation.

P In Paul’s letter to the Christians in Corinth he speaks about their life together using the example of a human body, saying:

just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:12-13)

Of the human body he says, If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. (12:26)

And he concludes, Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. (12:27)

In this same letter Paul says, “there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord” and that “to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” (12:4-7)

Do you desire to join with this congregation in the common bonds of fellowship and service: listening together to the Word of God, sharing in the Lord’s Supper, and joining in our ministry of witness and service?

Each person answers in turn.

R I do, and I ask God to help and guide me.

P Let us pray.

Gracious God, we give you thanks for the work of your Holy Spirit in these brothers and sisters, and for their desire to join with us as witnesses and servants of your grace. Stir up in them your Holy Spirit: sustain them in their faith and life; fill them

P The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C And also with you. The peace is shared by all. After the sharing of the peace you may be seated.

Offertory Prayer

A Let us pray.

To you, O God, our maker and redeemer, we offer these gifts and entrust our lives, that they may bear witness to your goodness and touch the world with your grace. Bless the work of our hands, the words of our mouths, and the meditation of our hearts, that they may be pleasing in your sight, O Lord our Rock and our Redeemer; through your son, Jesus Christ our Lord. WE ARE NOURISHED AT GOD’S TABLE

P Dear brothers and sisters, as we gather at God’s table to share the feast that is eternal, let us ask God on behalf of all those who suffer to bless this oil of anointing, that those in need may know the healing power of God.

P The Lord be with you.

C And also with you.

P Holy God, Heavenly Father, Creator and Redeemer of the world, source of all healing to body and spirit, sanctify with your Holy Spirit this oil and all who are anointed with it.

Touch with your grace and life all those who seek your healing. Open their spirits to your Spirit, their lives to your Life. Grant them a share today in the perfect healing that awaits us on that day when there is no more sorrow, nor tears, nor any more pain; through your son Jesus Christ our Lord.

C Amen

P Lift up your hearts.

C We lift them to the Lord.

P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C It is right to give God thanks and praise.

P It is our duty and delight that we should everywhere and always offer thanks and praise to you, O God through Jesus Christ who bids us turn to you and prepare for the Paschal feast, and so, with the church on earth, all creation and the host of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

P Blessed are you O Lord our God, Creator and Redeemer of all,

for in your mercy you have not turned away from your people or the world which you have made, but you have come to us in a Son who carried the burden of all our sin

and was lifted up on the tree of the cross for the healing and redemption of all.

Now in this bread and wine he comes to us to heal and to renew and to bind us together as your faithful people.

Send forth your Spirit that we may receive him with true trust and confidence and live our lives in him until that day when your Spirit reigns in every heart and all the earth is redeemed by your presence.

C Amen. Come Holy Spirit.

P In the night in which he was betrayed our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Now as we eat of this bread and drink of this cup we proclaim our Lord's death until he comes:

The acclamation is sung first by the presiding minister or cantor, then by the congregation

The Lord’s Prayer

C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

forever and ever. Amen

The bread is broken for distribution and the community invited to the table.

P Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”(John 10:11) Come, these gifts are for you.

Please be seated.

Distribution of Holy Communion

ABOUT HOLY COMMUNION (a note for visitors and guests): All are welcome to share in the Lord’s Table whether or not they are members of this parish. HOW COMMUNION IS DISTRIBUTED:

The ushers invite people to go forward, beginning with those in the front right-hand pews, going down the right side and then back up the left side to finish with those in the front left pews.

The congregation walks forward on the left side of the aisle and fills in around the altar beginning on the left side and continuing around to the right.

If you wish to receive communion, please hold your hands open to receive the bread.

The pastor will place a piece of the bread in your hand. (A gluten free wafer is available if you cannot receive bread. Please indicate this to the Pastor.)

The assistant will come next with the wine, take and drink from one of the small glasses. (White grape juice is available in the center of the tray for those who, for health reasons, cannot receive wine.)

An acolyte will come with a tray into which you place the empty glass.

When you are finished you may return to your seat. As spaces are empty, others may fill in.

Page 17: FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT - losaltoslutheran.org · 2 TODAY is the fifth Sunday in the Season of Lent, a time of renewal and preparation for the Paschal Triduum (the "three days" from

17

If you do not wish to commune but would like to receive a blessing, please come forward but keep your hands down, and the pastor will place the sign of the cross on your forehead with the words: “The Lord bless you and keep you in his grace.”

WHAT COMMUNION MEANS: The central actions of Christian worship are 1) telling the story of what God has done (the readings and preaching) and 2) sharing bread and wine as Jesus commanded us to do. God has promised that the destiny of the world is healing and reconciliation not brokenness and division. In Jesus that promised future became a present reality as he fed the 5,000 from five loaves and two fish, ate with “sinners and tax collectors,” and broke bread with his followers on the eve of his crucifixion telling them to “do this to remember me.” The bread and wine are thus a sign of God’s kingdom and Jesus’ “last will and testament,” granting us an “inheritance” of forgiveness of sins. As we share in this “meal” we are participating already in that promised day when all people are gathered around one table, and receiving now the forgiveness and life God gives.

About Worship in the Season of Lent THE SEASON OF LENT is a time of preparation for the great celebration of the cross and resurrection that begins with the evening of Maundy Thursday and continues through Good Friday until the Easter Vigil, the first service of the resurrection on that night that dawns into Easter day. LENT IS A PENITENTIAL SEASON, a time for an intentional turning to God to deepen and renew our faith and life through the disciplines of prayer, fasting, worship, and works of mercy. LENT IS ALSO A TIME OF "CATECHESIS," or teaching, when candidates are prepared to receive the sacrament of baptism at the Great Vigil of Easter. In keeping with this, our focus in preaching each Lent is on a part of the Catechism – this year on Luther’s explanation of the Office of the Keys: Confession and Forgiveness. THE LITURGY CHANGES DURING LENT to reflect the unique character of this season. "Alleluias" are not sung (so before the Gospel we will sing the verse from the prophet Joel "Return to the Lord") and the Hymn of Praise is omitted. The decorations are kept simple and spare; still each Sunday is a festival of the resurrection deeply rooted in the joy which is ours in Christ Jesus whom God has raised from the dead. In him we are forgiven and through him we call out to God in prayer, praise and thanksgiving.

About Holy Baptism THE CATECHISM SAYS “BAPTISM IS NOT WATER ONLY, but it is water used together with God’s Word and by his command.” The ritual of Baptism does not save, but is rather a visible word which proclaims that God has made us his own, redeemed us from the dominion of sin, and granted us his Spirit and a share in that Life which is eternal. Therefore Luther says “It is not water that does these things, but God’s Word with the water and our trust in this Word.” THUS BAPTISM IS THE BEGINNING OF A LIFE OF FAITH, a life of trust in God’s promise. It is not a single event locked in the past but a living reality, daily remembered and embraced – thus the importance of the promise made by sponsors and the community of faith to help the newly baptized person, whether child or adult, grow into the fullness of life in Christ. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BAPTISM for yourself or a family member, or in learning more about baptism, please speak with Pastor Bonde or Pastor Berkland.
