Fr. Don’s Doodling’s Do you realize that Lent is more than half over? Where has it gone? Well, if you’ve slacked off, if you’ve forgotten what you even decided to do for Lenten penance, if you want to make a new start, here are a few ideas that can help you get going. Our Parish Mission will begin this weekend. Fr. Justin Belitz, O.F.M., one of the friars of our Franciscan Province of the Sacred Heart, will be the mission preacher. He’s a very accomplished preacher and writer. Fr. Justin has given presentations in many parishes and in several countries, and has been very well received. We have parishioners who remember him when he gave a mission here some years ago. They’re very happy that he will be back. Fr. Justin is known for his approach to focusing the mind – meditation. This is especially helpful for us in our busy lifestyles with so many things on our minds that we find ourselves forgetting things, needing to prioritize the many things that demand our attention, multi-tasking, and wondering how we can deal with all that is on our plate. I’m sure Fr. Justin will be showing us how deepening our spirituality will help us to address these concerns. So don’t miss the Parish Mission with services Sunday thru Thursday of this week at 7:00 p.m. He will also have morning sessions right after the 8:00 a.m. Mass Monday thru Thursday. Let’s give him a warm and enthusiastic St. Francis welcome. Another good idea for Lent is to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The City-Wide Reconciliation Service will be at St. Peter Church on Palm Sunday, March 24, at 3:00 p.m. There will be a number of confessors there to offer this sacrament of healing of forgiveness. Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity. We will also have individual Reconciliation here at St. Francis on Monday and Wednesday of Holy Week, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. each day. At Christmas and Easter we all know that there are Catholics who come to church on those two feasts and not much more. For that reason you’ll be seeing special notices in the Bulletin in the coming weeks advertising our Returning Catholics Series that will be starting again on April 1. (No foolin’.) The notices are addressed to all of you as

Catholics Returning Home Do you know someone who has left the Church? Most of us do not have to look very far to find non-practicing Catholics in our circle of family and friends. Many of us are concerned about these loved ones, but we don’t know how to help them. Obviously, most of them are searching, but how can we help them find their way home?

As baptized, practicing Catholics, we have a precious gift of faith and love from the Lord that needs to be shared with our non-practicing brothers and sisters. First, we need to pray for them. Next, we need to extend a personal invitation to them to come home to the Catholic Church. Most non-practicing Catholics are waiting for an invitation to return. Many mistakenly think they are excommunicated and are not welcome for a variety of reasons.

Many non-practicing Catholics carry with them a tremendous amount of guilt and misinformation about the Church and are afraid of approaching the Church for fear of being rejected. You can make a tremendous difference in someone’s life simply by reaching out to them and telling them that we miss them and would like for them to come back home to our Church family.

Here at St. Francis Solanus we are holding a special program to help non-practicing Catholics return to the Church entitled “Catholics Returning Home.” The series begins Monday, April 1, at 7:00 p.m. in the Brother Martin Room, located in the lower level of the rectory. It will run for six Monday evenings through May 6. Please pass this article on to anyone who might be interested. Your invitation may be the best gift they will receive this year. For more information, call Deacon Wayne Zimmerman, 222-4836.

Fish Fry

There will be a fish fry this Friday evening at St. Anthony Church.

Continued from Fr. Don’s Doodling’s:

much as to those who have been away from the Church. Why? Because most of these non-practicing Catholics are not here in church to pick up and read a Bulletin. So it’s really up to you and me to seek out and invite these good folks to come back. Find an opportunity – in a pleasant and non-accusatory manner – to invite them to come to this series of positive and non-critical meetings. Deacon Wayne has done a great job with this in past years and many people have come back, enthusiastic about their faith. So we really need you to do your part – to issue the invitations. A wonderful Lenten practice. Please help! Finally, our Capital Campaign to build a Parish Center is in need of a boost. We need lots more pledges and need a lot more money in the bank in order to break ground. How about giving an Easter gift to help the project to get off the ground… or shall I say in the ground? Lent is all about sacrifice, and I know that can be difficult, painful. But as we all know, the rewards for our sacrifices are great and often surprising. So often when I’ve given to others I find that I get it back in unexpected ways. Please consider giving a sizeable gift, or even a modest one, to help us as we are Building in Faith, for the future of this wonderful parish. And if you are one of those who is in any way resistive or even opposed to this project, I ask you to please pray about it. Ask God to help us all to do what is best for the good of the community. And of course you can make good use of the Rice Bowls and “The Word Among us,” which we handed out. Let’s have what’s left of a good Lent.

Snow Plow – An Untimely Death Our snow-packed winter has spelled the demise of our 20+ year old snow plow. We are wondering if anyone has a used one that we might have or buy from you. Perhaps someone who is looking to replace a machine that is still good, and could let us have it for a good price. Otherwise, we would welcome donations to help with the cost of a new or used machine. The timing of our plow breaking down was not good. Please call Fr. Don, or leave a message at the Parish Office if you can help or if you know someone who might be able to help. Thanks a bunch.
