Favorite QuoteIn the eyes of abandonment, I was NEVER alone! While others lose who they are in this sport, I have remained exactly the same. With the losses and disappointments in life, my spirit hasn't been broken. I have been blessed with wonderful friends, family and fans who have supported and believed in me uncondi-tionally. I know that I am EXACTLY at where I need to be I have kept my faith, when others stopped believing Negative energy and vibes has naturally found a way out of my life, so that only positiv-ity can remain. As an MMA coach, the majority of questions asked are about conditioning and diet. While conditioning is important, diet should be the primary focus to achieving fitness goals. Developing good eating habits will speed up the overall progress of fitness goals and provide the energy needed for training.

If you have never stepped foot in a MMA gym, one of the first things you will learn is that it is like a second family. The camaraderie is like nothing you will find at a typical gym. Lets face it, we have all done it...you tell yourself you are going to run for 30 minutes, lift weights, and maybe squeeze in an ab workout. You get to the gym and there is no one there to push you and your 30 minute run is now 15 minutes, you may do some weights and you fail to finish the ab workout at home. One of the great things about working out in a Mixed Martial Arts gym is that you have the support of others and the guidance of an instructor.

Choosing a gym is the first and most important step of training. Figure out what it is that you want:Weight lossMuscle developmentBody shapingFighting on competitive level

Visit the gym, talk with the instructor, and spend some time observing the class. Choose a facility that offers different levels of training. One of the biggest mistakes that people often make is, not knowing what level to start at. If you are a beginner, never start out at an advanced level with the mentality that it will take you to your fitness goals faster. People often get discouraged and give up on working out all together. Same rules apply for a more advanced student, never start out at a lower level; for fear of failure, self doubt,

or you want to be a “show boat”.Stay challenged, you didn’t get to the advanced level from being mediocre.

Conditioning should not be overlooked, it is just as important as technique. Personally, I feel that fighting is broken into 3 parts; 40% mental, 30% conditioning, and 30% technique. Mental preparation is a person’s greatest weapon, not just in fighting, but also in training. Conditioning plays a large role in MMA, but must be balanced. Overtraining is something I see from beginner to advanced students. Give your body time to recover and rebuild. When starting a new conditioning routine at a beginner level, it is important to pace yourself. If you go too hard too fast, chances are you will burn out.

As a child I was always told “eat three square meals a day” and “finish everything on your plate”. Eating 5-6 small HEALTHY meals a day speeds up your metabolism and keeps your body from storing fat. There is no need to spend money on weight loss programs or supplements.Watch your daily calorie intake and you will notice an increase in energy and decrease in pounds.

My column is your column! Your feedback is important and appreciated; please send me your questions and/or topics of interest to [email protected]. Good luck getting started and remember nothing in MMA happens overnight.

1. Graze like a deer. Eating 1 or 2 large meals in a day halts the metabolism. If you eat smaller frequent meals throughout the day you maintain a higher metabolism because the physical act of digestion raises the metabolism.

2. Snack on lowfat/high protein foods when hungry. Most snack foods are very high in carbohydrates and low in protein and nutrients, causing the pancreas to secrete more insulin. The more your insulin levels increase, the more body fat is stored, thus slowing the metabolism. Aim for foods that will stabilize your blood sugar such as tuna, turkey, lean cuts of meat and vegetables such as brocolli, cauliflower, and celery. Fruits that are excellent snacks are apples, oranges, blueberries, rasberries, blackberries, pears, mangos, peaches, and tomatoes. Eliminate snacks such as chips, crackers, candy, popcorn, juice, and cookies. 3. Water, water, water. Drinking water suppresses the appetite and helps the body metabolize stored fat. An increase in water consumption can actually reduce fat deposits. The truth is the kidneys can't function properly without enough water. When they don't work to their full potential, some of their load is forced to the liver. One of the liver's functions is to metabolize stored fat, but if the liver has to do some of the kidney's work, it can't operate at full potential. Therefore, the liver metabolizes less fat. The key to a faster metabolism is to give your body what it needs-water, and lots of it. Strive for at least 96 oz. per day of water. 4. Do weight training/weight bearing exercise 3-5 days per week. Resistance training done with dumb-bells, cables, machines, or resistance bands speed up

the metabolism by creating what we call an "after burn." This means that not only will you burn calories while performing the exercise, but you will continue to burn calories throughout the day long after you have finished your workout. Remember this, every pound of muscle burns 30-50 calories per day and a pound of fat only burns six calories. Therefore, the more muscle you have, the more calories you can burn while resting! 5. Alternate between low intensity and high intensity cardiovascular sessions. The key to revving up your metabolism is to always keep your workouts unac-customed. As soon as the body becomes efficient at an exercise, it hits a plateau and your results are minimal. A good way to keep from reaching a plateau is to do different types of cardiovascular exercise at different intensities. Example: Day 1: At a track, sprint the straights and walk the curves for 1/2 mile to 2 miles depending on level or conditioning Day 2: jog or walk 30-60 minutes depending again on fitness level Day 3: rest Day 4: crossfit workout or jog 1 min/walk 1 min. for 30-60 minutes Day 5 speed walk for 30-60 minutes with hills Day 6 rest Day 7 rest or incorporat active rest

By varying your workout in this way, the body will always be in a fat burning state. Alwaysvary the intensity, length of time, and type of exer-cise you are doing.

6. Make breakfast a priority. Your body has been in a fasting state while sleeping for 6 to 9 hours, hence the name break-fast. Skipping breakfast tricks the body into thinking you are in a starving state-feast or famine. Because you body doesn't know when you will break this fast, it has no choice other than to hold on to that stored fat for survival. That hard earned calorie burning muscle begins to atrophy-exactly opposite of what we want. 7. Go easy on alcohol and sugar. There is no nutri-tional value in either. Two hundred years ago the average person ate only 2 pounds of sugar each year. In 1970, the average person ate 23 pounds of sugar in a year. Today, the average person eats over150 pounds of sugar in a year! Sugar and alcohol raise blood sugar levels drastically, causing the pancreas to secrete more insulin. More insulinmeans more body fat. I always tell my female clients this-a! moment on the lips means forever on the hips! Chiropractic Treatment Benefits for the Mixed Martial Art Athlete Athletes undertaking rigorous fitness regimes often push their bodies to the limit, this is applies to all athletes but more so for the MMA athlete . Since the athletes perfor-mance is based on the health and strength of their body, many need regular massage treatments and chiropractic adjustments just to stay in shape and keep performing to their fullest potential.

Some researchers believe chiropractic therapy also offers several benefits for athletes who are constantly pushing their body to the max. Whether they need to recover from injury, improve performance or increase joint flexibility, ongoing chiropractic treatments are a valuable addition to the athletes training regime. Many MMA fighters take advantage of chiropractic because they understand the benefits and the added edge they gain over their oppo-nents. Why Athletes May Need Chiropractic TherapyAccording to a study published in Chiropractic:

The Journal of Chiropractic Research and Clinical Investigation by Lauro A and Mouch B in 1991, athletes exhibited a 30% improvement in performance after 12 weeks of chiropractic treatment. They were tested on several aspects of athletic ability including kinesthetic perception, power, reaction time, agility and balance. Those who did not receive chiropractic treatment showed only a 1% increase in performance after 6 weeks of treatment, while those who received the chiropractic treatments showed an 18% increase in performance after 6 weeks. Many professional athletes also undergo treatments before, during and after a game. According to PracticalChiro.com, athletes including Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong and Barry Bonds all receive treatments from sports chiropractors so that they can improve their performance and recover properly throughout training and game season. (Source: PracticalChiro.com) According to SpinalHealth.net, 7% of the San Francisco 49’s football team consulted with a chiropractor shortly after winning the Super Bowl in 1990. Chiropractic treatments after the intense game allowed them to recover easily and restore their health. (Source: SpinalHealth.net)

Young athletes - not only professionals or Olympians – can also benefit from chiropractic treatment because this type of therapy enhances blood flow, improves range of motion and can also increase recovery rates after intensive training or a game. Full range of motion is particu-larly important for endur-ance athletes and those who must employ various types of stretches into their training routine. MMA athletes undergo more vigorous training than the average athlete and therefore would benefit greatly from what chiropractic offers.

Key Benefits of Chiropractic Treatments for MMA AthletesIn addition to improving performance, ongoing chiro-practic therapy offers several health and wellness benefits. These include:Improved posture Increased range of motion Better focus and concentration Reduction of migraines or severe headaches Increased blood circulation Better joint flexibility Reduced risk of injury Reduction of pain in major joints Increased blood and oxygen flow throughout the body Improved recovery rates after a sports injury Improved immune system that can ward off common illnesses or disease

Page 15: Fighter's Edge

Many athletes only turn to chiropractors after they have been injured, but it may be more beneficial to incorporate chiropractic therapy into the weekly training routine. A sports chiropractor can offer specialized treatments for MMA athletes, tennis players, football and basketball players, and other types of athletes who are constantly on the move.

For high-performance athletes, natural methods of stress reduction and toxin removal are necessary for better health overall. Chiropractic treatments may play an important role in the lives of these athletes throughout their training season, and during their most competitive seasons.

How do chiropractic adjustments help to improve athletic performance?

The answer lies in the nervous system. In our bodies, the brain is the master control and everything that we do is regulated by nerve impulses that are sent from the brain out to the body through our nerves. The vertebrae protect the spine and allow our bodies to move, but they can become fixed (the chiropractic term is subluxated) and these subluxated vertebrae can put pressure on the nerves as they exit the spine. This added pressure on the nerves can restrict the impulses that are sent from the brain to the body, which in turn can reduce the body’s ability to function as it should. Chiropractic adjustments improve the movement of the vertebrae and help to take the pressure off the nerves as they exit from the spine. With the release in pressure on the nervous system, the brain is able to communicate with the body more efficiently and the body functions with more precision. For the athlete who is looking for an edge to his or her physical performance, the improved communication between the brain and every part of the body, especially the heart, lungs and muscles can make the difference between winning and losing.

“I do believe in Chiropractic. I found that going to a chiropractor three times a week helps my performance. I once drove 20 miles to see a chiropractor before a fight. I have to have my adjustment before I get in the ring. The majority of fighters go to get that edge.” Evander Holy-field
