invites written application from interested Fiji Citizens, preferably between 17 – 24 years of age
with at least completion of year 13 education level for the trades:
(i) Shipwright
(ii) Fitting & Machining
(iii) Welding and Fabricating.
The application requirements to the “FSHIL Guide to Apprentice Recruitment” can be accessed
through the Fiji Ports Corporation Limited website – vacancy; www.fijiports.com.fjor could be
obtained via request on email to [email protected].
All interested applicants are to forward their EOI in a sealed envelope, addressed to the Chief
Executive Officer, Fiji Ports Corporation Limited, G.P. O. Box 780, Suva and clearly marked
“EOI FSHIL /APP/01/2019 – Application for Apprentices in the Trades and placed in the
Application for Apprentice Box provided at FPCL Head Quarters, Ground Floor, Muaiwalu
House, Walu Bay, Suva before 4pm on Monday 28th January,2019.
Only those whom are shortlisted would be advised. Should FSHIL never contacted the interested

Preamble This guideline is to assist interested individual applicant registered as Fiji citizens to go through our apprenticeships training scheme undertaking theoretical class at the Fiji National University in its College of Engineering, Science and Technology on the following trades;
(i) Shipwright (ii) Fitting and Machinist and (iii) Welding and Fabricating
The practical components of the training would be monitored, supervised and carried out at the slipway workshops through the watchful eyes of the Apprenticeship Officer of the National Productivity & Training Center. The guideline is design to assist and help each interested applicants.

1.0 Trades In Apprenticeships
The Fiji Ships and Heavy Industries Limited “a business subsidiary of Fiji Ports Corporation
Limited” had been part the Government’s Initiatives to promote the National Apprenticeship Scheme
registered under the The National Training and Productivity Centre (NTPC) and Fiji Higher Education
Commission (FHEC) on skill based training. In that the Executives and the Board of Directors had
agreed and approved and invest a budget for the recruitment of the apprentices. The choice of
recruitment is focused on the company’s core roles – Ship Repair and Ship Refit Services.
Below are the study areas for the apprenticeship recruitment. EOI individual may choose either of the
following trades in her/her application;
1.1 Apprenticeship in the Shipbuilding Trade x 6 only
1.2 Apprenticeship in Fitting and Machining Trade x 2 only and
1.3 Apprenticeship in the Fabrication and Welding Trade x 2 only
2.0 Academic Qualification And Job Description
The minimum educational requirement is a pass – Fiji School Leaving Certificate/Year 12 on the
following subject combination or:
2.1 English
2.2 Mathematics
2.3 Physics and
2.4 Relevant Technical Subject
3.0 Rate Of Pay And Period Of Training
The rates of pay from Year 1 to Year 4 are in accordance to the National Training and Productivity
Centre wages guidelines. However, the Executives and Board of Directors of the Fiji Ships & Heavy
Industries Limited put forward an incentive rates for an investment to build strong and firm leaders in
the organization of the years to come. Rates are as follows;
3.1 Year 1 – $1.94 to increase to $3.08
3.2 Year 2 - $2.05 to increase to $3.66
3.3 Year 3 - $2.37 to increase to $3.78
3.4 Year 4 - $2.68 to increase to $3.98
The training schedule is in accordance to apprenticeship scheme through a four (4) year period as per
the National Apprentice and Fiji Higher Education Commission (FHEC) guidelines

4.0 Advertising The Apprenticeship Vacancy
As per the company’s media policy all vacancy are to be advertised in the local newspaper and as well
the company’s website; www.fijiports.com.fj . ALL EOI applicants are required to send in their
interests through an application type using 12 fond sizes. The application must also include the
following;
4.1 Resume – layout from recent achievement to past in chronological orders
4.2 Three (3) passport photos of high quality
4.3 Original copy of birth certificates
4.4 Original copy of academic results
4.5 Original copies x two(2) references and three(3) referees
4.6 Any other documents that would add value to your resume and application

All shortlisted would be called by phone to attend the interview. You are expected to bring the
original certificates for verification during the interview. The copies would be dispatch back to you

6.0 Preparing And Carrying Out For The Interview
The panelist of interviewers would include member if the committees members present in the meeting
today and the same distributed amongst the apprenticeship training institution, education commission
and company. This is done as to ensure best possible candidates is pick for the coming four (4) years
of FSHIL’s investment;
7.0 Pre-Selecting of Candidates
A total of 12 preliminary candidates would be selected and shall go through a full medical test and the
police clearance report. From these 12 possible candidates, 10 would be taken in as final listing
8.0 Final Selection of Apprentices Candidates
The ten(10) successful candidates would recommended by FSHIL management for the Chief
Executive Office – FPCL and FSHIL endorsement and to seek his Chairman and Board of Directors
approval.
Offer letter would be given to successful candidates.

9.0 Signing of the Apprenticeship Contract Agreement
The Terms and Conditions of Apprenticeship would be read, initialed and signed by the following
parties;
9.1 Chief Executive Officer – FPCL/FSHIL (employer)
9.2 The Award Apprentice
9.3 The Parent, Guardian or person in loco parentis
9.4 Director - NTPC
10.0 NTPC/FSHIL Orientation and familiarization
FSHIL working in conjunction with the training providers (FNU/MBT/) and with National Training
and Productivity Center (NTPC) shall be conducting a 1 day orientation in regards to the employers
HR policy, work standard operation procedures, occupational health and safely, quality manual (ISO),
apprenticeships training guidelines.

your daily attendance. This is mandatory and it electronically link to PG – pay global system.

12.0 Issue of PPE and 1st Year Apprenticeship Tools/Tool Box
ALL apprentices must be issued with their 1st Year tools as acquired and guided through the National
Training & Productivity Centre Training Trade tool lists. FSHIL must issue the acquired tools
together with the apprentice wooden tool box. ALL issued a lock and two set of keys. 2nd Year, 3rd
Year and Final Years tools allocation are to be issued respectively when the date falls.
13.0 Introduction to respective Department Heads
The Fiji Ships & Heavy Industries Limited Human Resource Coordinator (HRC) would be
introducing and handover each apprentice according to their trade to their respective Foremen. These
movements are mandatory to be signed off by all parties, captured and recorded in the Apprentice
Personal File (PF)
14.0 Workload Assessment / Application for Manpower
Requisition /Engagement
Foreman in each respective department are to work and coordinate with the Human Resource
Coordinator for the Manpower Requisition and Workload Assessment approval in order to assess and
verify the daily activities and tasks carried out by the apprentices.
