New Variety Of Potatoes To Be GrownLocally

Fiji imports about 17 million dollars’worth of potatoes every year. With the introduction of these newvariety of potatoes to be locally grown,t could help reduce our import bill by

almost 50 percent. The new potato and sweet potatoesvarieties originate from Peru, Argentina,Bolivia and Ecuador. What we will do here, we’ll just multiply

because we’ve only got a few samples ofach variety. We will multiply to make

more numbers and distribute it out to thePacic region. Sweet potatoes in particularis a fast growing crop and that’s why it’svery ideal for disaster relief assistance”, saidLogotonu Waqainabete – CEPACT Curator

This will also help Pacic Islandcountries expand their variety of crops.“Helping countries to have that newdiversity for sustainable food security

because most of the time countriesdepend on a only a certain variety ofcrops”, he mentioned.

According to SPC, these new potatalso have unique traits.“For example they’re resilient diseases, some of them have nutritio

 benets. The purple sweet potatoes

high in antioxidants”, said he said.SPC’s strategic partnership with the NZealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs Trade enables SPC to source, multiand distribute new resilient cdiversity to support community fosecurity projects in the Pacic.

Saliva May Protect You From Chemicals InTea, Coffee

Believe it or not! Your saliva can rescueyou from powerful toxins present in tea, offee and liquid smoke avouring.

A compound present in saliva - alongwith common proteins in blood andmuscle - may protect human cellsrom DNA-damaging plant chemicals,

according to a study.Dangerous plant chemicals called pyrogallol-ike polyphenols (PLPs) are found in tea, offee and liquid smoke avouring. The presence of natural defence in our

body could help explain why PLPs arenot crippling cells and causing illnessas would be expected from their toxic

by breaking strands of DNA.In their research, they found that theimpact of the toxins was very strong- in some cases producing 20 timesthe damage of chemotherapy drugsdelivered to cancer patients."If these chemicals are so widespreadand they damage DNA to such a highdegree, we thought there must be

defence mechanisms that protect usa daily basis from plants we chooseeat," Kern suggested. An enzyme in saliva called alpamylase, the blood protein albumand the muscle protein myoglobin

Swinging Arms Most Efcient Way To RunEver tried running without swinging

your arms? New research has shown thathe swing in your arms counter balanceshe movement of your legs and savesnergy at the same time."We know from the literature that armwinging plays an important role in

balancing the motion of the swingingegs," said Christopher Arellano fromhe Brown University.

Arellano studied 13 runners and measuredheir oxygen consumption rates andarbon dioxide that they exhaled.

He asked them to run without swinging

heir arms by holding the arms looselybehind the back, crossing the arms

across the chest, and holding the hands

on the top of the head.He found that swinging the arms reducedthe runners' energy costs by three percent(as compared to when they held theirarms behind their backs).Arm swinging also saved energy animpressive 13 percent compared with

when they held their hands on th

heads."I think everyone conceded that the mchallenging run was the one with hands on the top of the head," Arelladded, recalling how runners complaiabout how tired their arms were at end of the session.

Keep Your Eyes Safe In SunEveryone knows how to protect skin inhe sun but what about eyes? Longer, azy summer days entice everyone topend more time outdoors, but whether

you are spending the day at the beach orust relaxing in the garden, eye care is

needed in every possible way.Not only does the sun make our eyesmore prone to infections and UV-elated conditions such as Photokeratitisa painful eye condition - similar to

a sunburn of the cornea - caused byxposure to UV light), it can also do

permanent damage as UV rays deeplypermeate the eye, causing damage tomany structures, as reported.Steve Schallhorn, chief medical directorat Optical Express, has shared his topve eye care tips:

Always read the label: Sunglasseshat are dark or tinted may look like

hey will shade your eyes, but only 100percent UV-protected sunglasses will

prevent your eyes from being exposedto harmful UV rays. Overexposure canlead to eye disease, especially for thosewith light-coloured eyes as they aremore sensitive to the rays. So, investin a pair of polarised sunglasses. Thelenses in these help reduce harsh glarefrom reective surfaces, enabling you tosee better during sunny days and further

protecting your eyes.* Get some fresh air: Although we'requick to turn on the air conditioning tocool us down as the mercury rises, thiscan lead to a syndrome known as 'dryeye' as air conditioning units removeall the moisture from the air. Commonsymptoms are persistent dryness, scratchiness, red eyes and a burningsensation. Avoid this by getting plentyof fresh air and only having the airconditioning on for short bursts of time.

* Blink more often: The eye issurrounded by uid, which protects

it by washing away debris and devery time we blink. Dry air can cahigh levels of microscopic allergwhich irritate your eyes. If your efeel drier than usual, try blinking a ftimes and make a habit of doingmore frequently. This will allow mmoisture into your eyes.* Pick up a stylish broad-brimmed hHead gear isn't just fashion-forwardalso a must when it comes to protectour eyes from the harsh sun. The withe brim, the more the hat will desunshine overhead and from the sidGo as big and bold as you dare when sun is at its strongest.* Drink plenty of water: Drinking of water during the summer monwill help your eyes maintain a heal

balance of uid, preventing them fr becoming dehydrated and irritat

Exercise Could Buy You Extra Years OfHealthy Life

Debunking the common assumptionhat ageing results in one becoming

progressively frail, researchers haveound that physical activity could help

xtend the strength and health of youth. The study of amateur older cyclistsound that many possessed levels of

physiological function that would placehem at a much younger age bracketompared with the general population.

With similar levels of exercise, theesearchers found little physical

difference between people aged 79 andhose aged 55.Inevitably, our bodies will experience

some decline with age, but staying physically active can buy you extrayears of function compared to sedentary

 people,' said Norman Lazarus from

King's College London in Britain.'A sedentary lifestyle causes physiological problems at any age.Hence, the confusion as to how much thedecline in bodily functions is due to thenatural ageing process and how much isdue to the combined effects of ageingand inactivity,' lead author Ross Pollockadded. The study recruited 84 male and 41female cycling enthusiasts aged 55 to

79 to explore how the ageing procaffects the human body, and whetspecic physiological markers can used to determine age.

Men and women had to be able to cy100 km in under 6.5 hours and 60 km5.5 hours, respectively, to be includedthe study.Smokers, heavy drinkers and thwith high blood pressure or other heaconditions were excluded from the stuThe researchers found that peopledifferent ages could have similar levof function such as muscle strength, lu

Beetroot Juice Boosts Exercise Function InHeart Patients

A small yet signicant study shows thatbeetroot juice improves exercise functionn chronic obstructive pulmonary diseaseCOPD) patients.

The new research by Wake Forest Universityooked at a small group of COPD patients

who drank beetroot juice as compared to aplacebo drink before exercise. The intent of this study was to determinef acute ingestion of beetroot juice, which

s rich with nitrates, prior to exercisingould improve the exercise capacity of

COPD patients,' said Michael Berry, chair of Wake Forest's department ofhealth and exercise science.COPD makes it difcult for patients to

breathe and worsens over time.In turn, they tend to limit their activities,

become more sedentary, and lose tnessand physical function. The ndings showed overall that those

patients who drank beetroot juice were

able to extend their exercise time andhad reduced exercise diastolic and

resting systolic blood pressures.'This is the rst study to demonstr

benecial effects of dietary nitsupplementation on exercise performaand blood pressure in patients wCOPD,' he added. One of the benetsexercise is that if you get positive resuyou are more likely to continue doing 'If beetroot juice positively impacts thresults, it could motivate COPD patie

Ways To Control Allergy Triggers At HomResearch shows that indoor air pollution, often caused by dust mites and mould,an be up to 10 times greater than

outdoor pollution. Use these easy trickso avoid unnecessary allergy triggers in

your home.Use Doormats With Synthetic FibersDoormats made of natural bers such aswicker can break down and become foodor mites, mould, and fungus that then

get tracked into your home with everynew guest. Wash all mats weekly.Avoid the Outdoors in the MorningNot only do many people with allergiesxperience more sneezing and itchingn the morning, but many trees releaseheir pollen in the air at rst light, andagweed pollen tends to y most thickly

at midday—when it'll stick to yourlothes and get carried indoors. If you

want to work out, do it later in the day.Change Your Clothes and ShowerWhen You Come inEven if you don't feel dirty, pollen clingso your hair and clothes where it canasily irritate your nose and eyes, andontribute to indoor air pollution. Don't

have time for quick rinse? At least washyour hands to remove lingering pollen, specially before making contact withood or your face.

Wash the Shower Curtain Every

MonthOr use cheap shower liners that you caneplace every couple of months. To helptop mould growth in your bathroom,

always run the exhaust fan or open awindow or door when using the showero help keep surfaces dry. Another options to run a small portable fan (away from

water sources) during and after showers. Also, check to see that the vent on theoutside of your house where the exhaustxits isn’t blocked by leaves.

Give Stuffed Toys a Deep FreezeThat teddy bear could be riddled withdust mites! Regularly slip stuffed toysnto a freezer bag and let them chill for to 5 hours. The cold will kill any dust

mites that could contribute to indoor airpollution.Make Sure Your Gutters Aren'tCloggedClogged gutters can result in watereeping into the house, leading to mould

growth, which can exacerbate allergies.Next time it rains, check your gutters. Ifyou see water leaking out of end caps, owing on the outside, or dripping

behind them, it’s time to get out theadder.

Keep Your Thermostat Set Above18°C in the WinterIf you set it too low, you’re encouragingthe growth of mould in damp air. Theheat dries out the air, preventing mould

growth and pollution. Of course, too-dry air can also irritate your lungs andsinuses. The perfect humidity in a homeis around 50 percent.Make Sure Your Dryer Vent is VentedOutsideFor every load of laundry you dry, 20

pounds of moisture has to go somewhere! If your dryer is vented to the garage or

basement, you’re just asking for mould buildup.Keep Your Pets CleanJust like you take off your shoes, alwaysmake sure to wipe off your pet's pawswhen they come in from being outdoors.Toweling off their coat can also help

prevent the spread of pollen indoors. You can also try giving them frequentwater baths to help dissolve the natural,allergy-causing substances in their sweatand skin that spread to their fur.Water Indoor Plants SparinglyOverwatering can contribute to thegrowth of mould, and any water thatleaks on to the oor is inviting mouldgrowth as well. Put pebbles on top ofthe dirt to discourage mould spores from

24 Parenting

Yelling At Your KidsMany parents worry if yelling at childrenan hurt them. This varies in differentamilies and different children and with

what is said, but if it harms the children'seelings about themselves, makes them

afraid or so worried that they are unable toplay or learn freely it can be very damaging. So it is important to think about how oftenyou shout at children, what you say, andwhat else is happening in their lives.Children's needsChildren need:o feel lovedo feel secureo feel safeo feel that they are worthwhileo feel caring limitso feel that they can succeed at somehingso feel that they can contribute - be

helpfulopportunities to explore and try newhings.

Talking to them in a way that endangersany of the above needs is likely todamage their emotional development.Family inuencesSome families are loud. It is a patternn the family to speak loudly or shout

and children who are brought up in thisatmosphere get used to the noise and arenot likely to be harmed by it (unless theyelling is putdown, or scary).Sometimes children from these familieshave trouble at school because they havenot learned to respond to directions whenhey are given more softly.f parents shout at children when they

are angry the child can feel the parents'anger and it can make children fearful.f parents shout at each other, younghildren may not understand that they areafe and it can be terrifying, especially if

one of the parents leaves or gets upset sohe children no longer feel safe in the care

of the people they trust to look after them.f parents often criticize each other

n front of the child it can endangerhe child's security and damage theirondence in themselves - because each

parent is part of them as well.f a family is always used to shouting andompeting for 'air-space' the children

may not learn to be good listeners and toallow others a chance to talk. The childChildren differ in their ability to copewith noise and shouting. Some children seem not to notice it verymuch; others will wince when they hearoud voices and are obviously upset

by them. These children can be made

fearful if there is a lot of yelling. Many babies and very young children can

be frightened by shouting, particularly by men who have loud deep voices. It is important to watch the child's responseand not to continue with behavior thatmakes a child fearful or insecure. What is said?As well as the noise and angry feelingsthat sometimes go along with shouting, the most important effects on childrenare from what is said.Anything which harms a child's selfesteem in any kind of regular way can

be damaging.Sometimes, especially when parentsare under pressure, they have to saysomething to express their frustration. It may be helpful to think in advanceabout what to say to relieve feelings

so whatever is said does not damagethe child. For example: "I have had aterrible day and I need a break" is far lessdamaging to a child than "You little so-and-so you always ruin my day".Children, especially young children, judgethemselves by their parents' opinions ofthem so words that are critical of the childhimself, or that compare him unfavorablywith others, will be damaging.Words that threaten the child's sense ofsecurity and safety are also damaging. Some damaging things to say tochildren:Threats - "If you do that again I'll leaveyou…"Things that say that life would be betterif they did not exist - "If it wasn't forthe children we could have had a newcar…", "I can't stand you for anotherminute…"Comparing - "Why can't you be tidy likeyour sister?"Labeling - "You are… messy, untidy, lazy, naughty, stupid, a nuisance, a sissy,a bully, clumsy, fat, a little pig, shy, hopeless…."

Blaming - "You make me sick, tired, cross…", "You give me…a headache, a pain…"Undermining - "I'll do it, you're tooslow…", "I love you but I don't likeyou".Discouraging - "Why do you always getit wrong?"Emotional abuseEmotional abuse is dened as when achild has suffered or is likely to suffer

psychological injury detrimental tothe child's well-being, or the child's

 psychological development is in jeopardy.

Getting in rstShouting can be the result of not beable to set a limit early enough befthe child has crossed the line where ycan't put up with it anymore. It is important to be able to recognwhen you need to stop what is happen

before you get to this line.As soon as you feel that this is happenyou need to stop whatever you are doing the children are doing, and do someththat will help change the pace e.g.:sit everyone down and make a drinkwatch a videoread a favourite story or play it on a t

play a favourite, not-too-exciting gamgo outside e.g. take everyone for a wOther things parents can doLet children know often that you love thand that you like them and you are pro

of them, to make up for the occasiotimes when you may say damaging thinLet children know that mistakes are impor

because they are a way of learning.Encourage children to try. Let children know that you value thhelp. If you are naturally loud and yell a explain to your children that that is the wyou talk and you are not angry with theIf you are angry with your partner trysort it out away from the children. If you are angry with the children takfew minutes or as long as you need befyou tell them - have cup of coffee, psome music, go for a walk or whatehelps you to calm down.If you do shout, try to make sure younot say thing that is harmful to childor put them down.If you do shout a lot, your children likely to shout too. They are copyyou, not trying to "get at" you.Talk about what you would like rather t

blame or threaten - e.g. "I want you to hme pick up the toys". Listen to yourself what you say and to how you say it.

If things are getting on top of you you are feeling angry a lot of the timget some support, either from y

partner or a good friend or a counseloRemember that what you do occasionallnot what harms children; it is what goesmost of the time. If most of the time yrelationship is good, that is what will coBooks for childrenThere are many books about feelinsuch as sadness, fear and anger, writfor children. Rati Agnihotri Finally Breaks Her Silence OnDomestic Violence By Husband Anil Virwani

The actress also talks about her decision to end her 30-year-old marriage to businessman

When actress Rati Agnihotri decided toomplain to the cops about the alleged

violence perpetrated by her husband,he didn’t expect the personal matter

would leak out into the public domain.Talking about her decision to open up,he says, “I am surprised and hurt that

my motives for speaking out to the lawnforcement and legal machinery are

being questioned. Because I chose tonot speak about it, some sections of themedia doubt the veracity of my claims.’ve remained silent, but the fact is thathat what is being said about my lifes not true,” she says as she resolutely

announces her decision to end hermarriage. “Yes, it’s time for me to moveone. I’ve taken a very long time to takehe right decision. People are asking whyremained in the marriage for so long.

Well rstly it’s my life. I don’t owe anyxplanations to anyone except my son

Tanuj for whose sake I chose to stayon. I’ve taken 30 years to opt out of mymarriage.”Rati wanted her son to understand

why she needed to break away fromhe marriage. “That was most painful.Tanuj is the only reason I stuck on (inhe marriage). He is 28 now and mannough to face the truth in his mother’sife. He knew the truth 10 years ago. He

knows the truth now. He knows what hismother has endured. Finally he has toldme. ‘Mom, don’t live your life for me.Live for yourself. Do what you think isight for yourself.’

Why didn’t Rati discuss her maritalproblems with close family and friends?I really had no one to talk to. I stuck

on to the marriage for my son’s sake. This is the honest truth. If the worldwould like to judge me otherwise, sobe it. It saddens me to see the way myife is being projected in the media.

Does the media know how hard it is onme to make the decision that I did afterkeeping quiet for 30 years? Just because

kept quiet all these years about what Iwas going through and nally decided todo something about it doesn’t mean mymotives are questionable.” Ponderingover her own predicament Rati asks, “Do

sound depressed to you? Do I sounddesperate? One widely-read newspaper

portrays me this way and I am painted poorly in numerous papers across thecountry. If you don’t have access tome it doesn’t mean my life is open todistortion.”Regarding her decision to break awayfrom the violent marriage Rati says,“After the latest violence I couldn’tstay in the same house any more. I hadnowhere to go, so I drove down to myhome in Lonavla. My son was shootingin Pune and he came to meet me and

advised me to do what I thought wasright. This (ending the marriage) was

my son’s decision for me. I am takhis advice. He said, ‘No matter wyou’ll always be my mother.’ Evtime something of this sort happewithin the four walls of my home, hthe only person I reached out to. In

past I’ve called him for help and he immediately come to my rescue. I still hurt because of the last beatiI don’t have the strength to go and my ailing mother. I’ve never failed amother. No matter what happens, Ta

Vancouver Whitecaps Admit Play Hasn'tBeen Pretty This Season, But Say "It's

About The Points"When you look at some of the mostsuccessful sides in world soccer, onehing that often separates them fromhe chasing pack is their ability to grind

out results, and especially wins, whenhey’re not playing anywhere near their

best. The Vancouver Whitecaps have beenshowing that ability in abundancehrough their rst four games of this

season. Three straight wins and threedramatic late winners have shown thathe ‘Caps have the mentality to get theob done, no matter the performance. Buthey have also shown that improvements

are needed in a number of areas to keephose wins coming. While he’d ideally like to play attractivesoccer and rack up victories, winningugly isn’t bothering Whitecaps boss CarlRobinson.I don't think it was pretty from our point

of view, but we won," Robinson toldeporters when asked about his team’satest last-gasp win, a 2-1 triumph over

Portland on Saturday. "I could have

stood here talking about how well we played and no points on the board. Youcan spin it whatever way you want, butit's about points."If I play brilliant all season and don'twin one game, I don't think you're goingto keep me here because of my delightful, intricate football. It's about results. Wehaven't found the balance yet between

playing really well and winning. At themoment we've got the winning and weneed to try and play really well."There have been glimpses of the fast, owing soccer that Vancouver has

produced in the past, but their opponents

have dominated possession in each ofthe Whitecaps’ three wins this season.Robinson knows his side won’t be ableto go through the whole season playingon the back foot, hitting on the counterand squeaking out the wins. Right nowthough, the condence in his group is skyhigh and he feels that it breeds success."We need to play better, we know that,"Robinson said. "It's a good habit to have, winning. At the moment we have a

good, winning habit in this group, soimportant that we continue to work hacontinue to do the small details correcand get a bit of luck along the way.“It's not nice when you're chasing

ball for long periods of time, but wgoing to have to do that sometimes.”Despite being behind in the possessstats, the Whitecaps defense hasallowed many shots on goal. Chicmanaged only three against Vancouand Orlando just one. It’s in the midof the park where the ‘Caps are beoutplayed and with the LA Galcoming to town at the weekend (10

ET; TSN1, MLS LIVE), it’s an area tneeds an instant improvement.“We need to rest on the ball more,” sgoalkeeper David Ousted. “Be ablekeep it and not be chasing all the tilike we were Saturday. Doing tespecially against LA, who again such a good team on the ball, if we keep the ball more and make them rthen I think we're going to have an eatime getting a result."
