1. Quantify content in tapes (hours)

2. Format selection

3. Operation (HR)

4. Time scale

Key factors for digitizing an archive

• Optimum scenario: Existing DB of the titles

• Typical scenario: Do the math… number of tapes and

estimated length per tape type

1. Quantify Content

• Ideally one unique format for the whole chain.

• Ingest (SDI from VT or live, cameras ENG, FTP)

• Editing (Adobe Premier, Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer, etc)

• Newscast (Studio playout)

• Broadcast (Transmission playout)

2. Format selection

Page 8: File based content management; Strategies for implementation and management

• Content processing and scan of material

• Batch capture generation with TC

• Ingest into shared storage

3. Operation – Acquisition

• Sound correction

• Removes lines produced by jitter

• Noise reduction

• Colours correction

• Chroma effects

• Content dimensioning

• Content revision

3. Operation – Restoration & Mastering

Versioning

• Multiple versions (subtitles, languages, platforms)

Archiving

• Low-res proxy generation

• Delivery to near-line storage (LTO or ODA)

• Cataloguing of the media asset and descriptive logging

3. Operation – Versioning and Archiving

Page 11: File based content management; Strategies for implementation and management

• Is reasonable to assume 4 hours of video may be mastered in 4 hours

• For 10.000 tapes of 1 h, assuming 220 days per year and a target of 8 hours

(4 +4) a day of digitized content, we would need:

– 5.6 years and 2 ingest channels

• Digitizing your archive is not one day task

4. Time Scale

Page 12: File based content management; Strategies for implementation and management

I. Factors to consider when going Tapeless

II. Effective content cataloguing techniques

• Standard data models from SMTPE and EBU (P-META 3295, CORE 3293).

• Custom metadata sets

• Support several attribute types: numeric, text, formatted text,

single/multiple selection from list, date, users and more

• Automatic recognition of file header: file size, resolution, frame size, aspect

ratio and more.

Genealogy and relationships

• Descriptive keywords

– Same ID for descriptors with same meaning: many, countless, bounteous, copious.

• Also for Multilanguage: many, baie, muitos, beaucoup

• Descriptive logging layers: Technical, Advertisement, Sports, etc

• Relation between assets.

– Asset types specifics for footage, groups of video assets, new wires, audio.

– Sequences of assets (in the Production environment).

– Link between asset versions. Parent and child relations.

• Sometime archive must be split…

• Different Islands for Production and Transmission may lead to different

Media IDs in each system

– Content produced (News and productions)

– Content broadcasted (Longform/Shortform/Intersitials/Commercials).

• Sharing physical resources: Common HSN and split the tape slots in groups

and be addressed as separate nodes by the two systems.

AGENDA

• Plan the migration, consider all the value chain, don’t start from the roof!

• Involve people! Operation is as important as technical specifications

• Prioritize content digitization

• Automate processes and workflow to be more productive

• Technology evolves quickly, assure ROI thinking 3 to 5 years ahead on

hardware needs. It may be cheaper add more storage when required in future.
