Employment by age(Official statistics: not designated as National Statistics)The following sheets contain estimates of employment by age for each of the regions and countries of United Kingdom. The figures are taken from the Labour Force Survey and are not seasonally adjusted.

These estimates are derived from the same data source as the headline figures, but due to the relatively small samples sizes and subsequent sampling variability, the figures should be used with caution and are designated as experimental statistics. A guide to the quality of the level estimates is given below.

National Statistics of employment by age band across regions can be obtained from the Annual Population Survey estimates which can be found in tables 2 within this release.

The APS is a continuous household survey, covering the UK, with the aim of providing estimates of the labour market at a local area level. The APS is not a stand-alone survey, but uses data combined from the main LFS with data collected on a local sample boost. The reference period comprise 12 months of survey data and are available quarterly. The achieved sample size is approximately 320,000 respondents with the aim to achieve a minimum number of respondents in the sample in each local authority. This is the preferred source for estimates of employment and unemployment by age band across regions.

The following table contains the Coefficient of Variation (CV) for the level of employment, unemployment and economic inactivity for each age band published in this release from the Labour Force Survey. They have been calculated as the median CV of all regions in UK for each type of economic activity by age band and should be used as an approximate guide to the quality of these level estimates. The CV indicates the quality of an estimate, the smaller the CV value the higher the quality. The true value is likely to lie within +/- twice the CV - for example, for an estimate of 200 with a CV of 5% we would expect the population total to be within the range 180-220.
