Pope Francis is the pope of the people!

With more than six millions devotees who braved the rain and cold

at the Luneta papal mass, Pope Francis has become the religious fortitude, an inspiration and powerful moving spiritual father of more than 80 million Roman Catholics in the Philippines, and most specially, the hope and the sunshine of millions of children whom he has hugged, kissed, embraced, smiled, whispered and talked with his voice, so assuring, and so fatherly.

Even the international and local media had captured the religious intensity of the people, and ever smiling, always waving Pope Francis. As described by Caroline Wyatt, BBC religious correspondence, she broadcasts: "The atmosphere has been electrifying despite the heavy rains. Pope Francis' visit has been

a resounding success. There's been enormous enthusiasm for the Pope and themes he's focused on: helping the poor, the importance of the family, and protecting the environment."

Other broadcasts and print media had played the warmest welcome by the Filipinos, with more 80 millions are Roman Catholic, on how they braved the rain and waited for many hours, just to see Pope Francis, waving and smiling in the jeepney like pope's mobile.

"Salamat sa Diyos at nakita ko ng personal si Papa Francis, binabasbasan niya ako, at sa tulong ng Diyos, mahi-heal ako sa aking sakit, " a forty-year old woman said when asked by one of the reporters. Other woman said: "Kahit hindi ko nakita si Papa Kiko, masaya na ako. at kasama ako dito sa daming taong naghihintay sa kalsada."

Upon his arrival in the Philippines to start the 5-day visit, the Filipinos in millions, waited and cheered along the routes leading to the airport, to say mass at the Manila Cathedral, to UST, and to Luneta for the final mass. And when he arrived in Tacloban, despite the signal No. 2 of tropical typhoon Amang, he was able to meet and greet thousands of people along the way, during the mass at the Tacloban airport; and in Palo, Leyte, where he apologized for cutting short

his visit. And he blessed all the Leytenos, and those devotees/typhoon victims who attended from the neighboring provinces. After the mass, one volunteer died due to the bad weather and Pope Francis consoled with the father of the victim and gave him a rosary and a religious medal.

Before the mass in Luneta on the last day of his visit, Pope Francis met the more than 20,000 youth and children at the Pontifical University of Santo Tomas where the rally for the youth was held.

With so much meaning of his presence and his messages, the youth and children listened intently to the Holy Father and what caught most of the attention when he mentioned about the three languages: the language of the mind (to think); the language of the heart (to feel) and the language of giving. He requested the audience to repeat the three languages. And when a 12-year old girl, Glyzelle Palomar, a former street child, wept as she told her story and asked why God had allowed children to suffer so much. Touched by the girl's action, Pope Francis replied: "Only when we are able to cry we are able to come closer to respond to your questions.

If you can only record all the wisdom of Pope Francis, one can be totally enlightened his purpose in visiting the Philippines. Even in the early preparation, he wanted to

meet the youth and the children, no lavish receptions and gatherings, more time to the Yolanda typhoon victims, and most important, no grandstanding by politicians.

In one of his qoutes: "Through sin, man has destroyed the beauty and unity of human family creating structures which perpetuate poverty, ignorance and corruption."

While heading to Rome, millions of Filipinos still chanting: Papa Francesco! And requesting him to return.

Yes, Pope Francis, an Argentinean, is the pope of the people, especially for the more 80 million Filipinos who have gained so much blessing, so much faith and hope, for better life.

Expression of joy and faith overwhelm Pope FrancisPope Francis is back in Rome after a historic pastoral and state visit to the Philippines where he was greeted by millions of cheering people who braved rain and steaming heat and waited several hours just to get a glimpse of him.

While travelling to the Philippines from Sri Lanka, the Pontiff said he wants to send a message to the poor who face "social, spiritual and existential" injustices. In a country composed of 80 million Catholics but with a quarter of the population living below the poverty line, the call for the church to embrace the poor has struck a deep chord.

Speaking during his flight from the Philippines onboard the Italy-bound Philippine Airlines chartered plane, Pope Francis shared that what he like best during visit was the “gestures”

Mayweather must confirm fight until this month Pope Francis experiences Filipino hospitalityFilipino boxing icon Manny

Pacquiao has given Floyd Mayweather until the end of the month to confirm that the unbeaten American will fight him on May 2.

Pacquiao says he and promoters Top Rank have agreed to terms that include giving Mayweather a 60 percent cut of the proceeds in a megafight, including issues such as the gloves to be used and a drug testing protocol. Pacquiao added that the deadline is necessary so that his team can choose another opponent if Mayweather refuses to sign the May 2 Las Vegas fight.

Mayweather (47-0, 26 knockouts) and eight-division world champion Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 knockouts) are two of the greatest boxers of their generation and experts believed that the fight would be a mega hit that will shatter all box-office and television revenue records.

Pope Francis and the papal entourage was recipient of the famous Filipino hospitality during his five-day state visit and apostolic journey to the Philippines. In a CBCP News post, Papal Nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Guiseppe Pinto said the Holy Father and the authorities in Vatican want to thank the Filipinos for the best hospitality they received everywhere they went. Vatican Radio reported that Pope Francis sent a telegram to President Aquino thanking him for his meaningful visit to the country.

Pope Francis, his entourage, and Vatican-accredited media that include 14 Filipino journalists

by which Filipinos expressed their joy and faith. He said the Filipinos reacted from deep inside their heart, encompassing feelings from faith, love, the family, delusion, and the future. He acknowledged the actions of the fathers who brought their children and the mothers with sick kids who proudly showed them to him to be blessed. The Pontiff also noted the capacity of Filipinos to celebrate and the ability to show genuine joy amidst the hardship of life.

Pope Francis also revealed that he was shaken in Tacloban which he also visited to console the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan. Known in the Philippines as Typhoon Yolanda, the storm was one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorded that killed or left missing more than 7,000 people and badly destroyed

villages in this central Philippine province in 2013. The Pope said the mass in Tacloban was emotionally moving for him when he saw the people standing still and praying. He added that he felt as though he was annihilated (“wiped out”) and almost couldn’t speak.

Pope Francis also remembered Kristel Padasas, the young woman who died in a freak accident after attending the Holy Mass.

The Pope also discussed other issues such as the Charlie Hebdo Paris attacks and birth control, among others while on the plane. The Jesuit-run America Magazine ran a full transcript of Pope’s plane press conference.

Meanwhile, President Aquino also spoke to Pope Francis on the determination of his government to eradicate

poverty, notwithstanding that his office e has been at loggerheads with the local Roman Catholic Church over a 2012 reproductive law that promotes artificial birth control.

Pope Francis is the fourth pontiff to visit the Philippines. The government declared a three-day public holiday in Metro Manila to clear the traffic and to enhance security measures.

Cebu Pacific apologizes for holiday flight messCebu Pacific CEO Lance Gokongwei apologized before lawmakers during the House panel hearing to explain the Cebu Pacific’s side on allegations that its management allowed overbooking despite the peak season, resulting in flight delays, cancellations and chaos.

Gokongwei denied that overbooking is the primary cause of the holiday fiasco. He cited other factors namely undermanned operations, absenteeism of staff, as well as Cebu Pacific’s failure to anticipate the effects of the holiday peak season. The company was fined P52 million by government for the holiday debacle.

Multipolar world order in a shrinking world

After the collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1991,

there was only one superpower left in a unipolar world order: The United States of America. For the next two decades, America was the world’s hegemon. It kept peace in an ever-increasing turbulent world. Thus began the era of PaxAmericana (American Peace).

Today, America is being challenged by two emerging superpowers: The Soviet Union’s progeny, the Russian Federation; and China, the fastest growing economy. While the two are still far behind the U.S. in terms of economic and military power, they have embarked on an ambitious path towards parity with -- or superiority over -- the U.S. And they are catching up, particularly in developing their nuclear power.

And what concerns the U.S. is that Eurasian and Asian powers are teaming up to confront America in a game of geopolitical brinkmanship. The Russia-China compact was sealed when Russian President

Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a summit in Moscow on March 22, 2013.

In my article, “New World Disorder” (March 26, 2013), Iwrote: “Upon his ascension to the presidency, Xi’s first venture outside China was to visit his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. At their summit in Kremlin last March 22, the two leaders agreed to form a “strategic partnership” to advance their countries’ interests. They affirmed their mutual support for each country’s geostrategic and territorial interests, which include territorial disputes. With more than 20 territorial disputes that China is embroiled with various countries — including Japan, Philippines, India, Malaysia, Taiwan, Vietnam — this could put Russia squarely on the paths of conflict, which could involve the United States who has mutual defense treaties with at least four of China’s adversaries.”

China DreamSince then, China has become

more assertive – and aggressive – in pursuing its territorial claim over 90% of the South China Sea and East China Sea. On November 24, 2013, China declared an Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) covering most of the East China Sea.

Last December, Kanwa Defense Review, a Chinese-language military magazine based in Canada, reported that China had secretly set up an ADIZ over the South China Sea. The ADIZ supposedly covers the area that is demarcated by the nine-dash line, which was the basis of China’s territorial claim over the South China Sea.

Artificial islandsThe U.S. military believes that

China is building an airbase on the Johnson South Reef in the Spratly archipelago in the South China Sea. China’s other reclamation projects include the Fiery Cross Atoll, Gaven Reefs, and Cuarteron Reef, which are also claimed by Vietnam and the Philippines.

China’s construction of military bases -- including air and naval bases – in the South China Sea would allow it to reach a wide swath of area bounded by the First Island Chain that runs from Japan’s southern tip through the Ryukyu string of islands, through Taiwan, through the Philippines’ islands of Luzon and Palawan, and all along the western part of Borneo. Interestingly, the First Island Chain runs parallel to the nine-dash line.

Indeed, that’s what Chinese President Xi Jinping’s “China Dream” is all about. Xi dreams of the revival of imperial China that had maintained Chinese hegemony in Asia during the reign of the Ming dynasty. “The great revival of the Chinese nation is the greatest Chinese Dream,” Xi said before taking office in November 2012.

Lake Beijing During the summit meeting

between Xi and President Barack Obama in California last June, Xi told the media that he and Obama were meeting “to chart the future of China-US relations and draw a blueprint for this relationship.” Then he added: “The vast Pacific Ocean has enough space for two large countries like the United States and China.”

It is now apparent that Xi wants the U.S. completely out of the South and East China Seas. China’s next move is to control the entire Western Pacific waters along the Second Island Chain which stretches from Japan all the way to Papua New Guinea by way of the U.S. territories of Guam and Saipan. That would put China’s navy at America’s doorsteps. If that happens, that would turn the entire Western Pacific waters into Lake Beijing; thus, fulfilling Xi’s China Dream.

Imperial RussiaMeanwhile, Russian President

Vladimir Putin has been trying hard to restore Russia to its old imperial glory. In 2014, he made several moves to assert his leadership over the Eurasian subcontinent that includes all of the defunct Soviet Union’s former republics and client states.

While Putin had succeeded in annexing Crimea, his efforts to bring down the pro-west Ukrainian government of President Petro Poroshenko were met with strong opposition from the U.S., European Union (EU), and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Putin reportedly bragged that Russia is a major nuclear power and also made threatening remarks to Poroshenko: “If I wanted, in two days I could have Russian troops not only in Kiev, but also in Riga, Vilnius, Tallinn, Warsaw and Bucharest.”

But little did Putin realize that such braggadocio won’t make the US and EU cower in fear. But Obama and the EU leaders had a different weapon to use against Putin – economic sanctions.

CollapseAnd then the unthinkable

happened: the price of oil plummeted, from $115/bbl (barrel) in June 2014 down to $53/bbl today! With oil exports comprising 70% of Russia’s total exports, it accounts for more than 50% of its budget. For the budget to stay in the black, the price of oil should be no less than $100/bbl.

The ripple effect is devastating! The Russian ruble lost 50% of its value since the Ukraine/Crimea “invasion.” The ruble is now trading at 58.7 to $1. Its value has nearly halved and capital outflows have reached $120 billion. And inflation is projected to be 8% at the beginning of 2015.

And the sanctions are working, causing innumerable damages to Russia’s financial sector, military, and others that Russia’s economy is dependent on.

With that grim outlook on Russia’s economy, Putin’s imperial ambitions suffer a huge setback. How can he go to war when the economy is in shambles?

Meanwhile, Xi offered Putin billions in loans to help Russia’s economy stay afloat and save Putin’s neck from the economically depressed Russian people who are expected to ask him to step down when the food lines start forming. But Putin said that Russia would only seek China’s help as a last resort, which begs the question: Would his generals remain loyal to him come hell or high water?

At the end of the day, planet Earth is going through a tectonic social upheaval; that is, a multipolar world order in a shrinking world.

1 Street S.W. Underpass Enhancements set to begin

Construction will begin Monday on enhancements to the 1 Street S.W.

underpass to provide greater safety and comfort for users of the underpass pedestrian walkways.

A number of safety and comfort issues were identified at the underpass including poor lighting, water drainage problems, uneven sidewalks and general deterioration of the underpass structure. Through a collaborative design process, enhancements were designed for both the underpass structure and the pedestrian environment extending from 9 to 10 Avenue S.W. These include:

• improved lighting• new sidewalks and guardrails• integrated art and wayfinding elements• water mitigation• painting of retaining walls and structure beams.

“The 1 Street S.W. underpass enhancement project is part of a broader underpass improvement program being implemented by The City to improve the pedestrian environment and underpass connections between the Beltline and downtown communities,” said Graham Gerylo, Centre City Implementation Project Manager. “The 1 Street S.W. underpass was

prioritized for enhancement because it has the highest pedestrian use of all Centre City underpasses (9,500 pedestrians per day), was identified by community stakeholders as an important gateway connection, and in recognition of its significance as a heritage structure.”

The budget for this project is $3.8 million and the enhancements are anticipated to be completed by the summer of 2015.

“Calgary Downtown Association is very excited about seeing improvements to the various underpasses in the centre city, starting with 1 Street,” said Maggie Schofield, Executive Director of

Calgary Downtown Association. “Underpass improvements are extremely worthwhile investments toward a safer, more inviting space that we are pleased to support, both as a stakeholder, and financially.”

“This has been a great collaborative effort involving many groups and organizations in working towards the enhancement of a very well-used pedestrian corridor and important connector to downtown.”

This project will result in some underpass pedestrian and road restrictions and closures. Starting Sunday, January 25, the west side pedestrian walkway of the 1 Street

S.W. underpass will be closed between 9 Avenue and 10 Avenue until the enhancements on the west side are completed. During this time, pedestrians will need to use the east side pedestrian walkway. One lane of southbound vehicle traffic will also be closed during construction on the west side.

When the enhancements on the west side are completed and it is opened to the public, the east side pedestrian walkway (as well as one lane of northbound vehicle traffic) will be closed until those enhancements are finished.

Homily of Pope Francis

Below is Pope Francis' homily during the Concluding Mass in Luneta last January 18,

2014. He also warned everyone not to wreck one's reputation through gossip.

A child is born to us, a son is given us” (Is 9:5). It is a special joy for me to celebrate Santo Niño Sunday with you. The image of the Holy Child Jesus accompanied the spread of the Gospel in this country from the beginning. Dressed in the robes of a king, crowned and holding the sceptre, the globe and the cross, he continues to remind us of the link between God’s Kingdom and the mystery of spiritual childhood. He tells us this in today’s Gospel: “Whoever does not accept the Kingdom of God like a child will not enter it” (Mk 10:15). The Santo Niño continues to proclaim to us that the light of God’s grace has shone upon a world dwelling in darkness, bringing the Good News of our freedom from slavery, and guiding us in the paths of peace, right and justice. The Santo Niño also reminds us of our call to spread the reign of Christ throughout the world.

In these days, throughout my visit, I have listened to you sing the song: “We are all God’s children”. That is what the Santo Niño tells us. He reminds us of our deepest identity. All of us are

God’s children, members of God’s family. Today Saint Paul has told us that in Christ we have become God’s adopted children, brothers and sisters in Christ. This is who we are. This is our identity. We saw a beautiful expression of this when Filipinos rallied around our brothers and sisters affected by the typhoon.

The Apostle tells us that because God chose us, we have been richly blessed! God “has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens” (Eph 1:3). These words have a special resonance in the Philippines, for it is the foremost Catholic country in Asia; this is itself a special gift of God, a blessing. But it is also a vocation. Filipinos are called to be outstanding missionaries of the faith in Asia.

God chose and blessed us for a purpose: to be holy and blameless in his sight (Eph 1:4). He chose us, each of us to be witnesses of his truth and his justice in this world. He created the world as a beautiful garden and asked us to care for it. But through sin, man has disfigured that natural beauty; through sin, man has also destroyed the unity and beauty of our human family, creating social structures which perpetuate poverty, ignorance and corruption.

Sometimes, when we see the troubles, difficulties and wrongs all around us, we are tempted to give up. It seems that the promises of the Gospel do not apply; they are unreal. But the Bible tells us that the great threat to God’s plan for us is, and always has been, the lie. The devil is the father of lies. Often he hides his snares behind the appearance of sophistication, the allure of being “modern”, “like everyone else”. He distracts us with the promise of ephemeral pleasures, superficial pastimes. And so we squander our God-given gifts by tinkering with gadgets; we squander our money on gambling and drink; we turn in on ourselves. We forget to remain focused on the things that really matter. We forget to remain, at heart, children of God. (That is sin: forget at heart that we are children of

God) For children, as the Lord tells us, have their own wisdom, which is not the wisdom of the world. That is why the message of the Santo Niño is so important. He speaks powerfully to all of us. He reminds us of our deepest identity, of what we are called to be as God’s family.

The Santo Niño also reminds us that this identity must be protected. The Christ Child is the protector of this great country. When he came into the world, his very life was threatened by a corrupt king. Jesus himself needed to be protected. He had an earthly protector: Saint Joseph. He had an earthly family, the Holy Family of Nazareth. So he reminds us of the importance of protecting our families, and those larger families which are the Church, God’s family, and the world, our human family. Sadly, in our day, the family all too often needs to be protected against insidious attacks and programs contrary to all that we hold true and sacred, all that is most beautiful and noble in our culture.

In the Gospel, Jesus welcomes children, he embraces them and blesses them (Mk 10:16). We too need to protect, guide and encourage our young people, helping them to build a society worthy of their great spiritual and cultural heritage. Specifically, we need to see each child as a gift to be welcomed, cherished and protected. And we need to care for our young people, not allowing them to be robbed of hope and condemned to life on the streets.

It was a frail child, in need of protection, who brought God’s goodness, mercy and justice into the world. He resisted the dishonesty and corruption which are the legacy of sin, and he triumphed over them by the power of his cross. Now, at the end of my visit to the Philippines, I commend you to him, to Jesus who came among us as a child. May he enable all the beloved people of this country to work together, protecting one another, beginning with your families and communities, in building a world of justice, integrity and peace. May the Santo Niño continue to bless the Philippines and to sustain the Christians of this great nation in their vocation to be witnesses and missionaries of the joy of the Gospel, in Asia and in the whole world.

Please pray for me!God bless you all!

Filipino people are well diciplined and very respectful of the authorities during the Papal visit. These gestures of respect are admirable indeed.

May the message of His visit to the Philippines remain in every Filipinos' hearts and leave with an indellible character in our souls.

It is not the question how many visits the Pope has made in one Country, but how many people have totally relinquished the bad attitudes and habits they have previously embraced.

"Not everybody who says he loves the Lord will be saved..."

Family Violence is the abuse of power within a relationship of family, trust or decency that endangers the survival and security or well-being of another person. It can include many forms of abuse from spouse, senior or child abuse and neglect.

We must all be involved as a community to send and reinforce a clear message that solutions for preventing family violence must be developed together by committing to positive changes. Preventing family violence must be developed together by committing to positive changes.

A maple-coated Filipino Heart

I'm not Catholic but I love Pope Francis

I already liked Pope Francis even before his visit to the Philippines. I waited for the result of the papal conclave in 2013 not only because I was interested to know but also, this was something that mattered to Filipinos around the world. Like everyone, I asked "Jorge who?" when it was announced that Jorge Mario Bergoglio was the new Pope.

If you are my Facebook friend, you know that for one week I had posted nothing but Pope Francis' visit to the Philippines. I was expecting somebody from my church would call my attention but no one did. My brother is a priesthood leader in my church but respected my views. My Canadian bestfriend is the wife of my bishop but didn't ask a thing. They knew I was posting from the heart and I have nothing but great admiration and high respect to one of the greatest world leaders that walked in this planet.

How can you not love him? He's the first church world leader to visit my hometown after typhoon Yolanda. He defied the typhoon forecast and flew to Tacloban at signal #2. His presence there meant the world to my townmates. The visit was not a spur of the moment decision, he flew all the way from Rome to personally console my family and friends. Tacloban was the priority of his trip. He said during his homily, "I’d like to tell you

something close to my heart. When I saw from Rome the catastrophe, I felt that I had to be here. And on those very days I decided to come here. I am here to be with you – a little bit late, but I’m here."

He added, "So many of you have lost everything. I don’t know what to say to you. But the Lord does know what to say to you. Some of you have lost part of your families. All I can do is keep silent and walk with you all with my silent heart. Many of you have asked the Lord – why Lord? And to each of you, to your heart, Christ responds with His heart from the cross. I have no more words for you. Let us look to Christ. He is the Lord. He understands us because He underwent all the trials that we, that you, have experienced." He is the Pope but sometimes cannot find the words to say – what humility!

An adorable PopeI think Pope Francis didn't

know that when he picked the name "Francis" he became close to Filipinos because there are many Franciscan schools in the Philippines. Many of us can even memorize the prayer "Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love..." I myself graduated high school at Saint Francis Educational Institute.

Few months after he was elected Pope, news stories of his lifestyle and his being pro-poor came out one after another. He changed the image of the papacy. He broke some Vatican protocols just to be close to the people eventually earning the title "The People's Pope."

He chose to live in a simple guesthouse rather than at the papal palace used by his predecessors. He refused to wear the traditional papal red cape, he's always seen in white. He prefers to wear a silver ring instead of gold. He keeps the same

pectoral cross on his chest when he was still cardinal. He wears a pair of ordinary black shoes, the practice was to wear red. He carries his own bag, he doesn't have an assistant tailing him.

Power didn't change him. He doesn't see himself as king. Our politicians have so much to learn from him. He stunned diners at the Vatican cafeteria when he showed up and joined the line to pay for his food, tray in hand. The cashier said she didn't have the courage to hand him the bill.

Pope of all faithOn his way to the Philippines,

he dropped by Sri Lanka for a 2-day visit. While there, he visited a Buddhist temple and witnessed a major ritual of opening a casket of relics of two important disciples of Buddha. Pope Francis listened respectfully as Buddhist monks chanted and prayed. This to me, is the best definition of "reaching out." Nothing comes close.

Speaking to reporters about the

deadly terrorist attack in Paris, this is what he had to say, "You can't provoke, you can't insult the faith of others, you can't make fun of faith." He added, "You can't make a toy out of the religions of others. These people provoke and then (something can happen). In freedom of expression there are limits."

He then gave an example, he turned to his aide and said, "It is true that you must not react violently, but although we are good friends if he (referring to his aide) says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch, it's normal."

Who cannot love this Pope? He knows how to put himself on the shoes of others regardless of their religious affiliation. He is the Pope of all faith. He is my Pope too.

Pope of all sectorsHe can relate to many of

us. He knows poverty. He knows dictatorship. He knows what it's like to be an immigrant. His parents escaped fascism in Italy and migrated to Argentina. In Argentina, they were "second class citizens" who were not rich or poor. He came from a middle-class family of five children, his father was an accountant, his mother a housewife. Sounds like I

am describing a Filipino family eh? Yes he is very like us.

He was an outspoken archbishop of Argentina before he became Pope. He slammed the government for unjust distribution of goods. He said, "The unjust distribution of goods creates a situation of social sin that cries out to heaven and limits the possibilities of a fuller life for so many of our brothers."

Although he slams same-sex marriage, this is what he has to say to the gay community, "If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge? We shouldn't marginalise people for this. They must be integrated to society."

That to me, is compassion to the highest degree. Who cannot love this Pope? He is the Pope of the poor, the immigrants and the gays. He values our strengths, not our weaknesses.

The Catholic church is lucky to have him as world leader and messenger of God. He does not only take care of them, he takes care of all of us. Thank you Pope Francis. We love you. You are one of the greatest.

Uncertain in Alberta

Lito Mendoza Velasco

Low oil prices and high household debt puts Albertans at risk

While many Canadians are celebrating at the pumps – BMO says low gas

prices could save Canadian drivers around $1500 this year – those working in the oil sector aren’t so quick to rejoice.

Plummeting oil prices spell bad news for Alberta. This week, Suncor Energy, Canada’s largest oil company, said it will react to falling prices in 2015 by cutting 1000 jobs, reducing spending, and delaying projects.

Oil’s freefall even caused the Conference Board of Canada to utter the dreaded “R word.”

"The province is certain to suffer, especially on the employment front, from the drop in oil prices — and it is likely to slip into recession,"

said a report by Conference Board of Canada economist Daniel Fields.

The plunge in oil prices couldn’t come at a worse time. Alberta saw dramatic increases in household debt over the last year, with average household debt exploding by 40 per cent from $89,026 in 2013, to $124,838 in 2014. This leaves financial experts worried that a sudden job loss or reduction in income could send Albertans into a debt-tailspin.

“We are in volatile times,”says Jeff Schwartz, executive director of Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada. “Albertans are no strangers to boom-and-bust oil prices, but with household debt so high, they need to take some serious precautions to

BackgrounderSupporting Canadian Families The Family Tax Cut

The Government of Canada is proposing a new Family Tax Cut of up to $2,000 for couples with children under the age of 18, effective for the 2014 tax year.

The proposed Family Tax Cut will take the form of a federal non-refundable tax credit that will allow the higher-income spouse to transfer up to $50,000 of taxable income to a spouse in a lower income tax bracket, up to a maximum benefit of $2,000. Tax relief is calculated on the basis of a difference in federal tax before and after the transfer of income.

The Family Tax Cut will apply for the 2014 and subsequent taxation years. Couples will be able to claim the credit when they file their 2014 tax returns. To benefit from the credit, each spouse must file a tax return. Either spouse may claim the credit.

This measure is estimated to reduce federal tax revenues by approximately $2.4 billion in 2014-15 and $1.9 billion in 2015-16. More than 1.7 million families are

expected to benefit from the new Family Tax Cut. This proposal will not affect provincial or territorial tax revenues.

Universal Child Care Benefit In 2006, the Government

introduced the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB), which provides all families with $100 per month for each child under the age of six. The UCCB currently provides direct federal support to approximately 1.7 million families with young children.

The Government is proposing to enhance the UCCB by providing $160 per month. In a year, parents will receive up to $1,920 per year for each child under the age of six.

The Government is also introducing a new benefit of up to $720 per year for children age six through 17.

Enhanced payments for the UCCB will take effect as of January 2015 and will begin to be reflected in monthly payments to recipients in July 2015. This measure is expected to cost the federal government

safeguard themselves.”Consolidated Credit offers the

following tips to help Albertans brace themselves for possible periods of unemployment:• Create your own glut – Try to direct at least five per cent of your income to a savings account every month. You will want to build up an “emergency fund” equaling three to six months of living expenses to help you avoid taking debt during this time.• Don’t live on the edge – Just because you are making money and feel like you can live large today, doesn’t mean you should. A sudden reduction in income is often outside of your control. Being conservative with your large purchases and everyday spending means you won’t be hung out to dry in the event of sudden job-loss or income reduction.• Be prepared-just in case – If you are laid off, it’s worth finding out whether or not you are entitled to EI and how you can apply. As well, find out what other sources

of income you may be entitled to including severance, unpaid overtime and unpaid vacation. Seek professional advice to see how you can maximize your options without too much long-term damage.• Drill into your budget –Budgeting is tough in the best of circumstances and worse when money is tight. This is a time to review your financial picture and seriously consider needs vs wants as you assess your ability to keep up with your bills.

“Don’t just live within your means; live well within your means,” adds Schwartz. “Spendingwisely today will help weather any storm that might come tomorrow.”

approximately $1.1 billion in 2014-15 and $4.4 billion in 2015-16. Approximately four million families are expected to benefit from the enhancements under the UCCB.

The enhanced UCCB will replace the existing Child Tax Credit for the 2015 and subsequent taxation years. The enhanced UCCB combined with the repeal of the Child Tax Credit is expected to cost the federal government approximately $700 million in 2014-15 and $2.6 billion in 2015-16.

Child Care Expense Deduction The Child Care Expense

Deduction (CCED) allows child care expenses incurred to earn employment or business income, pursue education or perform research, to be deducted from income for tax purposes. Generally, only the lower-income spouse can claim the CCED.

Currently, the maximum amount that can be claimed under the CCED each year is limited to the least of: • The total amount spent on child care expenses;• Two-thirds of the lower-income taxpayer’s earned income; and,• The total of the maximum dollar

limits for all children, that is $7,000 per child under age seven, $4,000 for each child aged seven through 16, and $10,000 for children who are eligible for the Disability Tax Credit, regardless of their age.

To better reflect the cost of child care expenses, the Government will increase the dollar limits of the CCED by $1,000 – i.e., to $8,000 from $7,000 per child under age seven, to $5,000 from $4,000 for each child aged seven through 16 (and for infirm children over age 16), and to $11,000 from $10,000 for children who are eligible for the Disability Tax Credit.

These changes will apply for the 2015 and subsequent taxation years, and will reduce federal revenues by an estimated $15 million in 2014-15 and $65 million in 2015-16. More than 200,000 families are expected to benefit from the increases in the CCED limits.

Doubling the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit

The Government will double the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit (CFTC) and make it refundable to further help families making the choice to put their children in fitness

activities. Making the tax credit refundable will ensure that lower-income families benefit from this measure.

Parents will be able to take advantage of the new $1,000 maximum limit in the spring of 2015 when they file their tax returns for 2014. The credit will be made refundable as of the 2015 tax year, increasing benefits to low-income families claiming it for that year and subsequent years.

Together, the proposed enhancements are expected to cost the federal government approximately $25 million in 2014-15, and $35 million annually thereafter.

The CFTC was introduced by the Government in Budget 2006 to help promote physical fitness among children by making it more affordable for Canadian families to register their kids in fitness activities. When fully implemented, the proposed enhancements to the CFTC will fulfill a commitment made by the Government in 2011. The enhancements will deliver additional tax relief to about 850,000 families who enrol their children in eligible fitness activities.

H o r o s c o p e

You'll start this week feeling strong about your goals and plans for the future. And this kind of energy flowing through you gives you the right attitude to make a success of things. In addition, knowing the right people and connecting with the right groups can help your cause immeasurably.

You might be more aware of money matters, especially where shared resources and joint finances are concerned. This week will motivate some serious thought about how you can cut back on waste, increase your savings, or use any spare money to pay off debts.

A financial decision may be needed early in the month, or at least a chance to talk things through with someone who can set you on the right direction. You're keen to expand your perception and get involved in opportunities that are a bit of a stretch. You'll welcome challenges that bring new experiences, as well as bump up your skill set.

You're going to have a busy time ahead. Part of this may be your desire to get ahead, so you may be putting a lot of pressure on yourself to succeed. Knowing how to pace yourself so you don't burn out too quickly could be a lesson worth learning. When it comes to joint finances and banking issues, you'll be in front of the game should you require a loan.

Let yourself be guided by the wisdom of others. A few quick questions to the right person could put you on track to success in no time. Relationships in general are good, with an opportunity to expand your social circle and network with people.

Romance looks quite extraordinary, with opportunities to take a new relationship to the next level of commitment. However, don't be tempted to manipulate a situation to suit you. It's important to give your love interest the space and time to make a decision. If you do, you may find things move along smoothly. Your wellness sector encourage you to get fit and lose any pounds you gained over the holidays.

Your communication sector suggests that writing, speaking, and marketing could be a big part of your life for the future. This could be an exciting time when you develop a writing or Internet business with serious clout. Lay the foundation now and the future could be very brilliant. Meanwhile, romantic opportunities look excellent.

The presence of Saturn in your personal finance area suggests it's time to get down to business. This can be an ideal time to increase your income by starting an enterprise that could blossom over the coming weeks and months. Later, entertaining at your place could be fun.

You may feel attached to certain responsibilities as Saturn moves more deeply into your sign, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. If you've been dreaming about goals and plans, you now have the motivation to bring them to life.

The current adjustment encourages you to take an unbiased look at your life to see what's working and what isn't. The things you're passionate about and motivated to do are the ones to focus on. If any part of your life seems like a struggle, it may be past its due.

You're in a natural phase in which it’s time to recharge your batteries. However, you’re also keen to start new plans and projects. For the time being, try to find balance between the two so you can make the most of promising opportunities.

It's time to think seriously about where you're going and what you want to achieve. It's best to have a plan in place even if you do change aspects of it further down the line. Your social life continues to buzz - with one relationship becoming intense. There is potential for romance in the air.

Bakit Mas Mala-Fiesta ang Pasko at Bagong Taon sa Pilipinas?(On Why Christmas and New Year Celebration in Cold Countries Is Not as Festive)

permit a comfortable lavish outdoor celebration.

Having said that, there are no firecrackers here—even watusi. There is, however, a park here known as The Forks—where there is a firework display that involves only shooting or firing off giant "Roman candles." The lightshow is usually short, from about 7–9 p.m. of New Year’s Eve, and then that's it; people then go back to their homes to celebrate the rest of the evening with a simple dinner with their families and, maybe, close friends.

Many Filipinos compensate for this inability to celebrate festively outdoors by hosting dinners at their homes for relatives and friends--the highlight of which is usually karaoke

singing. There are also exchange gifts and some parlor games for kids and adults alike in some cases.

The good thing about this, however, is that, because the celebration is indoors, it makes the spirit of the season more intrinsically intimate, less ridiculously lavish, devoid of the dangers of firecrackers and stray bullets from careless revellers, and more of celebration than a contest on who has the most fancy display of materialism.

Or, in Simple WordsThe celebration of Christmas

and New Year’s Eve here in Canada is not festive not because people here don’t prefer it that way or not because they are not happy people; but rather because the kind of weather Canada has during the said holiday season, especially in the months of December to February, is too brutally cold to even allow people to stay long outdoors without feeling sick and uncomfortable. So, it’s really not about the people; it’s simply about the harshness of the Winter weather.

Joe Cocker: ‘You Are So Beautiful’

I was sending some messages to friends one afternoon when I saw the Facebook posting of Eric Clapton that said Joe Cocker passed away at 70. Right away, I found myself humming “You Are So Beautiful,” followed by “With a Little Help from My Friends” and “Up where We Belong.” Clapton and Cocker are two of my favourite artists.

I remember the first time I sang at one of the folk bars near Welcome Rotunda, in Manila, Philippines, called Chick Fil-A. A friend of mine asked me to go with him and jam during his set. I was kind of shy then, and the first thing that came to my mind was a song of Ol’ Joe Cocker, “You Are So Beautiful.” When I started singing, the folks begin to sing along with me, with gusto. Joe Cocker was famous in the Philippines; he still is, especially to people who love folk rock music.

The applause of the people did something to the mind of a beginner. It inspired new artists like me to join the ranks of veteran folk singers. The place reminded me also of the time when there were big rallies against the abusive regimes that plagued the Philippines in the ’80s to late ’90s. After those rallies, comrades and friends usually hung out at bars to unwind and do a little assessment of what went on.

Another place that I had a chance to play at was Mayric’s Bar, on España Avenue, in front of UST, in Manila. The first time I went to this bar, in the ’80s, some folk singers dished out Joe Cocker’s songs. Mayric’s was also a hangout of many activists in the ’80s and the ’90s. I hear Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War”; Jackson Brown’s “Lives in the Balance,” “Rebel Jesus,” and “Personal Revenge”; Peter Paul and Mary’s version of “Blowin’ in the Wind”; and Christy Moore’s “Viva la Quince Brigada,” being sung by the Filipino folk singer Noel Cabangon. Paul Simon’s songs were also played there, such as “Still Crazy after All These Years.” I like also the songs of Joan Baez. Chikoy Pura with his band The Jerks performed his song “Reklamo” and covers of The Doors. Burt Chaves rendered Cat Stevens’ songs and Gordon Lightfoot’s “If You Could Read My Mind.” My friend Empiel Palma would belt out “You Are So Beautiful,” while another friend, Danny Fabella, would sing his song “Rosas ng Digma.” The three of us would eventually become a trio named Musikang Bayan. We would go to different island gigs all over the country like Cebu, Davao, and the northern part of the Philippines. I really enjoyed those days. While we were on board the ship, people would usually request “You Are So Beautiful.”

My gig at Mayric’s started in the early

’90s. Folks would request me to sing Ol’ Joe’s “You Are So Beautiful,” which inspired me more whenever there were pretty girls in the audience. There I met Noel Cabangon, who was a buddy of Rom Dongeto, who wrote “Kanlungan.” Noel and Rom eventually formed Buklod. I am proud to say that Rom was one of my songwriting teachers when I attended a workshop in Los Baňos, Laguna. In that workshop also was Kiko of Grupong Binhi from Bagiuo who remains active to this day, writing protest music.

Another bar that became famous in the ’90s was ’70s Bistro. It also became a hangout of activists. Artists who regularly performed there included Joey Ayala, Bayang Barrios, Gary Granada, Ang Grupong Pendong, Asin, Lolita Carbon, Grace Nono, Banyuhay, and Jess Bartolome. I remember the note posted at the door of the bar: “When you enter, you have to leave your ideology outside and just unwind.” This was a time when there was a great debate going on within the social movement on strategy and tactics. In that bar, you could talk about revolution while somebody wass singing Joe Cocker songs.

In the late ’90s up to the early part of 2000, I played gigs at My Brother’s Mustache Folk Bar, which had branches on Timog Ave. (Quezon City), Jupiter St. (Makati), and Nakpil St. (Manila). I used to play there with Leonard de Leos, another folk-singer friend of mine. I vividly recall one gig when Robin Padilla with Princess Punzalan was in the crowd, requesting me to play a song that he could sing. Even there, Cocker’s “You Are So Beautiful” was a hit.

Now that I am here in Winnipeg and learning about the passing of Joe Cocker, I couldn’t help but remember those dandy days when, instead of being focused studying law, I was more into reading Marx and those who debated with his ghost and memorizing songs for my thrice-a-week gigs. Political Science, Social Theory, and protest music indeed went hand in hand and made my younger life exciting.

In the midst of the great marches for change, one could hear Ol’ Joe Cocker’s belting out “With a Little Help from My Friends“ and “You Are So Beautiful.” Well Ol’ Joe, keep on rockin’ in heaven with your heavenly renditions. Thanks a lot for the music.

"We are the children of our landscape [and weather too]; it dictates behavior and even thought in the measure to which we are responsive to it."—Justine, by Lawrence Durrell.

A friend in the Philippines asked me how most people celebrate New Year here in Winnipeg,

Manitoba, Canada; and if it is as generally festive as it is in the Philippines. Here is my response to her:

I would say that the weather has a great factor on how people celebrate events. Winter here--especially the months of December to February are the coldest—reaching -40degC. With that brutally cold temperature, events and occasions are better celebrated indoors. This is the primary reason Christmas and New Year is not festive here. Not that people don't like colorful, joyful, or festive celebrations but simply because the harshness of the weather wouldn't
