i. Total Credit Hours Required for Graduation: 120 14. Rationale for Change(s) – if rationale involves accreditation requirements, please include specific references to that.

The change to the Economics Core is to replace STA 291 with STA 296, which Statistics has developed as an alternative/replacement for 291. The changes in the course requirements for the Spanish-FLIE option accomplishes two goals: (1) include SPA 310 in the core since it is a pre-requisite for both core and elective classes and (2) give students a wider variety of courses from which to choose their electives. The changes in course requirements for the Japanese-FLIE option will expand the range of course offerings for FLIE-Japanese majors as well as to make our language requirement compatible with other programs within FLIE. The FLIE/Italian program will help students develop their Italian langauge skills and cultural literacy with a view toward an international career. Italy is the fourth largest economy in the European Union and the ninth largest in the world. Outside of Italy, between 120 and 150 million people use Italian as their second language. Possible careers for FLIE/Italian graduates include international business or law, tourism, foreign and public service, non-profit organizations, fashion and design, and the private sector. U.K. course offerings in Italian have increased in the last four years, and with two full-time faculty and one part-time instructor, we now have the staffing to cover the required courses. Italian enrollments continue to be strong, and the recent approval of an Italian Studies minor will encourage interest in that language area.
