Cinematography & Camera Techniques

At the beginning of this sequence we can see the use of a establishing shot. The director used this shot for the viewers to have a better look of where the first scene in the sequence is going to take place.Another camera technique used in the sequence is a long shot; this helps the viewers see both the person whose running and their surroundings. Another is a medium shot that was used in the sequence. This medium shot used here helps the viewers see the emotion on the person’s face as they try to get away from the people chasing him.The use of the close up after the medium shot also helps with showing the viewers the emotion on his face. The use of this shot on the lit petrol can thing adds affect to what’s about to happen.A different technique the director used toward the middle of the sequence is a two shot. The two shot used here helps us see both the little girls in that scene together, allowing us to see the emotion on both their faces.Another camera technique used is a tracking shot. Usually with this type of shot it’s used to show off an area or as someone is walking/running, etc. Here in these parts of the sequence its used to show off the area as it comes closer to where the main things are taking place. The pan shot used on the little girl helps the viewers see her full front from head to waist to show off the markings on here dress and give it a more dramatic feel.An over the shoulder shot is used in this sequence as Freddie gradually moves closer to his victim. Visual Effects & Colour Scheme

There are a lot of low key lighting scenes in this sequence. The director used this to give it a creepier, scary feel to fit with the film genre. It wouldn’t help shooting a horror film where people are getting haunted in their dreams then killed to have it all light and high key. Even the bits that are meant to be set during the day have a dark, low key thing to them.

Genre Conventions

A Nightmare on Elm Street is a thriller/horror film; we know this because of the easily detected features that can be seen in many other films like this with the same genre. E.g. victims, killer(s), horrible events, screams, music, dark feel, a knife/weapon, etc.

Narrative There is both non-diegetic and diegetic sound used in this title

sequence. Non-diegetic when the woman is speaking over the top of the video briefly, e.g. “there’s this man”, when the little girl is singing and when there’s music. Diegetic sound when the actual characters are speaking in the sequence.

Editing Techniques In this sequence the editing techniques used are to darken the footage and add certain lighting to give it a specific feel that goes with the genre of the film.

Title Credit Design There aren’t many titles through the sequence, only at the beginning and the end. The titles in the sequence though are placed in the middle of the screen when they appear on screen. The colour of them is a red which makes them stand out to the viewers on the black background, the font is also a bold.
