Film Poster Analysis(Ancillary Task)

Page 2: Film Poster Analysis

Chemistry is clearly present between the two characters. Connotes warmth, and already reflects the romance genre. The papers flying around them are blurry but they are clearly defined, as if suggestign that they live in their own world, going at their own pace.

Title. Little icon inside of the ‘O’ represents what the film is about, which is also enhanced by the typewriter. Warm colour palette.

Papers blurred whilst flying around. The blurriness enhances the quickened pace of the going ons around the two.

The deep red connotes the romance genre of the film. The red is at its lightest around their faces, connoting a deep, sweet love. The colour also doesn’t distract the audience too much from the main points. The typewriter is a hot pink, with colourful keys. This immediately draws the viewers attention, and has a dominant placement on the poster, connoting that the typewriter is the motive for the film.

The denotation of his suit is vintage and dated, connoting that the film is set in the past. His face is amused, yet emits a dominant vibe, following the idea of a dominant male in an earlier age.

A cut out image of the two dancing. The colour palette is dark, with red and pink shades, giving off a sexy, intimate aura.

Leading roles. Written in the top corner in a fairly large font, attracting viewers not only for the plot, but for the fans of the two actors.

Title of film. Brightest colour on entire poster, instantly drawing your attention to it. Plays a dominant role.Tag line of the

film. Small text, however still stands out due to the white being one of the most dominant sections on the colour palette.

Small, informative text. Written in white, making it easier to identify and read. However, as it isn’t as exciting and as necessary for the viewer to read, it isn’t as dominant as other poster features.

Photo of the pair dancing, connoting the content of the film. The dark, intimate colours and brightness give off a strong suggestion of the romance genre included in the film.

Actor names written in black, placed at the top of the poster. This is one of the largest areas which your attention is taken to, due to the black on yellow contrast. The large actor names, such as Steve Carell, Paul Dano, etc. will all have their own fan bases. This will attract not only their fans, but other viewers who are simply interested in the premise of the film, reeling in more viewers for several reasons.

Characters all running together, all contrasting in their costume. All are dressed out of stereotypical fashion, giving each character their own personality, reflected in this section of the poster. The background has been cut out, leaving only the characters, only showing what’s important.

The yellow camper van denotes a bright yellow, connoting the sun, hope, and happiness. The colour of the van connects to the release date of the film, being in Summer, possibly attracting more viewers by the bright, warm colour scheme.

Tag line gives an insight into the real genre of the film, as the rest of the poster doesn’t give that impression. This gives the premise depth when concerning the poster, attracting again more viewers.

Yellow background is the basis for the bright colour palette. The brightness will automatically attract a viewers eye compared to a darker poster.

Reviews and awards. Sundance award will automatically reel in fans of the film festival, as well as fans of the magazines etc., due to a readers trust in these publishing's.

Rain in background – connotes drama – foreshadows heartbreak? Blue colour palette also reinforces the idea of drama, reeling in fans who would particularly watch a film of this genre.

Tag line. The use of “great love” exposes the romance genre within it, attracting fans of romance. The tag line is written in black, playing a role of dominance over the pastel toned colour palette.

Actor names. Including the actor names automatically attracts the fandoms of these particular actors, bringing in more profit for the filmmakers. These are also written in black so that they stand out against the white.

The blue dress blends into the background, highlighting and foreshadowing the drama that lies within the film. Blue dress on a female = girl next door impression? Wet hair and little glamour = strong, independent female? Is she breaking the conventions of a weak yet sexy female? May reel in those who are strong on women’s independence?

Film title. Written in black, largest text on screen = steals your attention first. “From the bestselling novel” – also attracts the fandom of the book, or fans of Nicholas Sparks, the author. “THIS SUMMER”

written in dark blue, standing out against pastel colour palette. Rough release date written in bold, making it easy to remember.

Leading actor names. Written in yellow, standing out against the black. The placement of the names (at the central top of the poster) is very prominent, leading the viewer’s eyes towards that point. The fandoms for each actor will reel in a large audience, bringing in a significant profit for the film.

Casual, hand drawn scribbles. Does this suggest humour as a sub genre? Gives another light hearted vibe, suggesting a feel good impression.

“SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK” written in bold yellow, greatly standing out against the rest of the black and white poster. This attracts your attention more prominently than anywhere else.
