    EXPORTSOres & Minerals

During the year 2008-09, the value of exports(including re-exports) of ores and mineralsat Rs.109296 crore accounted for 13% of the total

value of all merchandise exported from India. The

export value rose from Rs. 80931 crore in 2006-07

to Rs. 95,022 crore in 2007-08 and further rose to

Rs.109,296 crore in 2008-09. The value of mineral

exports showed an increase of 15.03% in 2008-09as compared to that in the previous year.

Diamond (Total)) continued to be the largest

constituent item with a share of 66.1% in the total

value of mineral exports in 2008-09. Next in order

of share was iron ore with the contribution of

19.9% followed by granite of 4.4% and alumina

1.5%. The individual share of remaining minerals

in the total value of exports of ores and minerals

from India during the year under review was less

    than one percent.

There was an increase in the value of exports

in case of most of the principal minerals in

2008-09 as compared to that in the previous year.

    Sulphur (excluding sublimed, precipitated and

colloidal) showed a highly significant growth of

export value by manifold. In terms of value, the

export of coke increased by more than 6 times and

barytes, salt (rock) and limestone rose to more

than double during the year under review. The

other minerals which showed a significant growth

are lead ores & concentrates 96%, abrasive

    (natural) 77%, alumina 56%, garnet (abrasive) 52%,

manganese ore 45%, mica 44%, quartz & quartzite

35%, precious metal ores & concentrate, bentonite

and emerald (cut & uncut) 33% each, petroleum

(crude) 29%, coal (excluding lignite) and diamond

26% each as compared to that in previous year.

The export value, however, had recorded a decline

in case of zinc ores & concentrate by 81%, bauxite

    69%, sandstone 37%, chromite 20%, natural gas

18%, building and monumental stone, NES 16%

and marble 11% as compared to that in the

    previous year.

Ores and minera ls were exported to

193 countries in 2008-09 as against 183 countries

in 2007-08 (including country item unspecified

in both the years). About ninety percent of the

total value of exports of ores and minerals was

confined to only nine countries. Out of these,

exports to six countries accounted for more than

three-fourths of the total value of exports during

the year. As in the earlier years, exports to China

continued to occupy the top position in 2008-09

and in terms of value, accounted for 23.9% of the

total mineral exports. Hong Kong was in the

second place and contributed 20.4% followed by

United Arab Emirates 15.5%, USA 13.1%, Belgium

    7.8%, Israel 3.5%, Japan 2.6%, Singapore 1.6%,

and Thailand 1.3%. The individual share of

remaining countries was less than one percent.

    Countrywise analysis of mineral exports

revealed that the increase in value of mineral

exports was more than three times for Brazil, two

times for Iran, Singapore, Pakistan, United Arab

Emirates, Malaysia and unspecified countries rose

more than double during the year under review.

The rise in the value of export in respect of some

other countr ies was : South Afr ica 68%,

    Bangladesh 36%, Netherlands 33%, France 31%,

Saudi Arabia 30%, Hong Kong 15% and Germany

11%. However, value of exports of ores and

minerals declined by 53% for Rep. of Korea, 35%

for Spain, 32% for Chinese Taipei/Taiwan, 21% for

UK, 17% for Romania, 15% for Australia, 10% for

Israel, 9% each for Thailand and Nepal and 8% for

Switzerland, among others as compared to that of

    previous year (Tables - 1 to 3).

96% in 2008-09 as against 97.3% in the previous

    year.

During 2008-09, the import value of diamond,

rock phosphate and sulphur (excluding sublimed,

precipitated & colloidal) rose to more than double

during the year while manganese ore and clay

(others) increased by two times and above over

the previous year. There was an increase in the

value of imports of petroleum (crude) by 34.7 %,

and that of coal (excluding lignite) 99.3%, natural

    gas 39.2%, asbestos 48.2%, marble 23.8%,

limestone 29.9%, emerald (cut and uncut) 35.8%,

fluorite 55.1%, cobalt ores and concentrate 21.3%,

    borax 70.5%, gypsum 77%, and building &

monumental stones 99.1%, zirconium ores &

    concentrate 23.2%, granite 66.3%, kaolin 37.2%,

tin ores & concentrate 82.9% and sand (excluding

metal bearing) 26.7% during 2008-09 as compared

to that in the previous year. The value of imports

of iron ore, however, declined by 65.8% and that

of molybdenum ores and concentrate by 27.5%,

zinc ores and concentrate by 22.1%, alumina by

18.0% and coke by 10.1% during the year under

    review over the previous year.

During 2008-09, minerals were imported from134 countries as against 128 countries in 2007-08

(both f igures inc lus ive of country i tem

unspecified). Approximately 97% of the total

value of imports of ores & minerals was confined

to 35 countries and only 10 countries accounted

for about 74% of the total value of mineral

imports. As in the earlier years, Saudi Arabia

continued to occupy the top position in 2008-09

and in terms of imports value and accounted for

14% of the total mineral imports. Next in orderwas United Arab Emirates with 12% and Iran 10%

followed by Nigeria 8%, Kuwait and Iraq 7% each,

Australia 5%,Hong Kong, Belgium and Venezuela

4% each and Indonesia and Qatar 3% each. The

individual share of Malaysia, China, USA, Angola,

South Africa, Chile and Egypt varied between

2 to 1 percent and that of remaining countries was

    less than one percent.

During 2008-09, the value of imports of ores

and minerals from UAE, Indonesia and Brunei in

2008-09 rose to more than double and that of

Jordan and Russia to about three times over

previous year while the imports from Venezuela

showed a very highly significant growth. The

value of imports from South Africa increased by

90%, followed by Qatar 80%, Egypt 69%, Brazil

    68%, Angola 59%, Aus t ra l i a and Be lg ium

The value of imports of metals & alloys at

Rs.199489 crore showed an increase of 40.5% in

2008-09 as compared to Rs. 141947 crore in the

previous year. The contribution of metals & alloys

in the total value of all merchandise imported to

    India was 15% in 2008-09.

    Gold, non-monetary & monetary (total) with a

share of 48% continued to occupy the top position

in the total value of metals in 2008-09. Iron & steel

came in second place and accounted for a share

of 30.2%. Platinum alloys & related metals

occupied the third place with a share of 6.9%followed by silver 4.8%, aluminium and alloys

    inc luding scrap 3 .4% and copper & a l loys

(including Brass & Bronze) 2.8%. The individual

share of remaining metals was less than one

percent of the total value of imports of metals &

    alloys.

The imports value of metals & alloys during

2008-09 was generally on higher side for most of

the important metals and alloys. The value of

import of silver rose to more than double and

that of cadmium (including waste & scrap) to about

five times while that of platinum alloys & related

metals increased to significantly higher level

during 2008-09 over the previous year. The value

of imports of gold, non-monetary & monetary

(total) increased by 41.5% in 2008-09 as compared

to that in the previous year while that of iron &

steel rose by 25.4%, aluminium alloys & scrap by

11.8%, lead and alloys including scrap by 20.2%,

ferro-alloys by 15.5%, tin and alloys including

scrap by 25.7%, silicon by 30.4%, cobalt and alloys

(including waste and scrap) 51.5%, magnesium &

scrap by 54.1%, chromium & alloys by 38.6% and

mercury 35.2%. On the other hand, during 2008-

09, the value of imports of zinc and alloys

including scrap showed a decline of 38.6%,

followed by antimony alloys and scrap 37.3%,

nickel & alloys (including scrap) 34.8%, selenium

    30.9%, bismuth & scrap 27.2% and manganese &

alloys including waste & scrap 12.3% as compared

    to the previous year.

India imported metals & alloys from 184

countries in 2008-09 as against 183 countries in

    2007-08 (both figures include unspecified

country item). Bulk of the metals & alloys was

    impor ted f rom 29 coun t r i e s ( inc lud ing

unspecified country item) which accounted for

95.1% of the total value of metal imports in 2008-

    09. Switzerland occupied the top position with a

contribution of 22.2 % of the total value of metal

imports in 2008-09 followed by UAE in secondplace with a share of 16.3%. The countries next in

the order were Australia 10.3%, China 8%, South

Africa 7%, UK 4.4%, Rep. of Korea 4.1%, USA
