Welcome to Turin!

Turin has been chosen to host Near Surface Geoscience 2015. The 2015 event will host the 21st European Meeting of Envi-ronmental and Engineering Geophysics, the First European Airborne Electromagnetics Conference and the First Confer-ence on Proximal Sensing Supporting Precision Agriculture. The conferences have their own technical programme and are aimed to attract people specialized in the conference topics as well as people with a broader Near Surface Geoscience focus. The combination of conferences offers participants from dif-ferent disciplines a chance to follow a technical programme specialized in their area of expertise whilst also being exposed to other disciplines.

Delegates can register for the conference of their interest. The registration gives them access to the technical programme of that specific conference. Moreover, they are free to also at-tend the technical programmes of the other conferences and visit the exhibition. The social programme, consisting of a wel-come reception and a conference dinner, is also included in each full conference registration.

The exhibition is the central place where companies from all dis-ciplines display their products and services. The coffee breaks and welcome reception take place at the exhibition and provide excellent networking opportunities in an informal setting.

About the City

Turin is located in the north-west of Italy, at the margin of the Padana Plain and close to the Alps. Sited at the meeting point of both the Dora River and the Po River, Turin is famed for its rich Baroque character and many spacious boulevards. Turin is also home to more than its fair share of historic arcades, grand architecture and street cafes.

21st European Meeting of Environmental and Engineering Geophysics

The 2015 conference is a special occasion: in September 1995 the first Environmental Engineering conference was held in Turin and now, twenty years later, it is with pride we proclaim that this event has become a successful reference meeting for near surface geophysicists. There is an increasing demand by geoscientists to develop ac-curate technology for slope investigation and geotechnical and soil characterization; near surface geophysical methods are rapidly increasing in environmental issues, landfill man-agement and monitoring and contaminated site assessment and clean up monitoring activity. Moreover, with Italy being a seismicity country, applied geophysics is a relevant topic to focus on the main geological features associated with earth-quake mechanisms and seismic hazard. Because of the rich-ness of its history, remote sensing and applied geophysics are widely adopted in archeological issues as well. All these topics are included in oral and poster sessions as a starting point for interesting and innovative discussions.

First European Airborne Electromagnetics Conference

EuroAEM provides a European forum for innovative research and novel applications in the field of airborne electromag netic (AEM) geophysics. Even though European research groups provide a significant part of the global AEM development, no geophysical conference on European ground has recently been dedicated to this important geophysical method. Eu-roAEM aims to fill this gap. The conference further balances the five-year rhythm of the international AEM workshop, held last in 2013 and planned again in Denmark in 2018.

First Conference on Proximal Sensing Supporting Precision Agriculture

Precision agriculture applications need high detailed informa-tion in respect to spatial and temporal variability of soil prop-erties, hydrology, and crop evolution. The benefits of precision agriculture to farmers are maximized crop yields and reduced input costs, allowing a farm field to be divided into different management zones for the overall purpose of optimizing eco-nomic benefits and environmental protection.A great variety of soil and crop sensors have been developed and used in the last decade, to provide these maps by non-invasive, quick and relatively cheap methods. State of the art of these technologies is in continuous evolution such as the related data interpretation and elaboration. The conference will therefore provide an interdisciplinary fo-rum for researchers, professionals and engineers from all over the world to show their latest researches and to share experi-ence in the fields of proximal sensing in agriculture.

Workshops

Workshop on Advances in Imaging for ArchaeologyThis workshop will address advances in new and novel ap-proaches to acquisition, processing, interpretation, representa-tion, including high-resolution tomographic techniques. Case histories are also sought, particularly those demonstrating the role of geophysical studies in improving the effectiveness of a comprehensive archaeological and historical problems.

Workshop on Geophysics for the Characterization of the Critical ZoneThis workshop will present the state of the art for geophysical characterization of the CZ, and discussion shall be elicited to indicate the possible ways forward. Special attention will be given to the integration of geophysical (time-lapse) data with distributed eco-hydrological modelling.

Field Trips

The Langhe RegionThis field trip to the Langhe Region, the famous hills of wi-neries, will focus on the geology of the region. The Langhe landscape covers five distinct wine-growing ar-eas with outstanding landscapes and encompasses the whole range of technical and economic processes relating to the winegrowing and winemaking that has characterized the region for centuries. The area is also affected by interesting translational soft-rock slides; unstable rock volumes slide along planar surfaces running appreciably parallel to, and often co-inciding with, the dip direction of the bedding. These land-slides are continuous, over the area, both in space and in time. The tour will include:• Morning: leaving from Torino, Langhe tour with sightseeing

of outstanding vineyards landscapes and a visit to one of the few still visible planar slidings.

• Afternoon: tour of the vineyards

The AlpsThe field trip will focus on Punta Helbronner on the Mont Blanc massif (3 450 m a.s.l.) and the visit to the FMS - Safe Mountain foundation in Entreves, at the foothill of the Mont Blanc. Punta Helbronner, located at an elevation of about 3.462 m asl, will be reached in the morning by means a modern cable-way; it offers a unique view of Mont Blanc summit (4810 m asl) and the other major peaks at the border between Italy and France. From the top you will enjoy the view on the Glacier du Géant which joins to the Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice) which is the second largest glacier in the Alps. In the afternoon, FMS Safe Mountain foundation will show us their activities on risks assessment, monitoring and manage-ment of glaciers, deglaciated areas, glacial lakes, rockfalls-monitoring plan.

Short Course

Geophysical Investigation of River EmbankmentsPrior to the Near Surface Conference a brand new EAGE Short Course will be presented by Dr Ernst Niederleithinger. His course will shed some light of the most important safety belt for people, farms and industry in flood prone areas. The failure of river embankments has cost thousands of lives and caused a billion Euro damage in recent years. Geophysical in-vestigations are excellent tools for structural and condition as-sessment of river embankments, but the selection of methods, interpretation and integration with other techniques has to be done properly. The course will give guidance into the various ways to design, perform and interpret geophysical survey for river embankments.Dr Ernst Niederleithinger is a senior scientist at BAM and a professor at RWTH Aachen. He has 25 years’ experience in engineering geophysics and non-destructive testing in civil engineering. He has lead a national research project on the evaluation of geophysical techniques for river embankment investigations and is co-author of the corresponding hand-book.
