Towards a better future

Since I can remember I have always been around construction. Both my granddads worked in construction. Almost all my uncles work in con-struction. So naturally, it also became my trade. 2008 was a year that the U.S. will never forget because it was the start of the modern recession. I lost my job as a self-employed construction worker, where I managed home building projects. This was also the year I decided to go back to school and get my G.E.D. It did not take long to get it. This was the start of my new life. It was the beginning of a new future for my family.

Once I got into college, I knew was that I was going to go all the way with it; I am in it for the long haul. It was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. I want to break the family tradition of dropping out of school. I don’t want to continue the tradition of working in the con-struction field of building and only taking orders. I want to be the one giving the orders. I want to see what I can accomplish. In the words of a preacher called Eric Thomas, “I want to see how far I can go, I want to see what I can accomplish, I want to see what I can do, what I can be, what I can have. I want to see”. Those words are burned into my head. So I decide to go to school and study something meaningful. That is why I chose to study architecture and I intend to study at Texas Tech University School of Architecture at El Paso, Texas.

When I went to the first advising meeting at Dona Ana Community College the advisor asked me that if I was sure that I wanted to study Archi-tecture, without a doubt in my mind I said, “Of course, I do”. I knew that I wanted to study Architecture because that is what I envisioned for my life. Initially I was in the drafting program at Dona Ana Community College. I was blown away by the computer programs. Then after seeing that students were building models and doing presentations, I wanted some of that action too so, I switched major to the Pre-Architecture. Since then I became proficient in AutoCad. I learned how to use AutoCad Achitecture, SketchUp, Revit and Other programs such as Photoshop and Inde-sign. In Dona Ana Community college I was also a member of the American Institute of Architecture Students, where I participated with Habitat for Humanity, where I applied my construction skills to help the cause. Always looking for a new challenge, I know that I’m ready for the next level. I know that Texas Tech University School of Architecture will prepare me for the rough world out there. I only hear great things about this school, and I want to be a part of this. I have seen what this school can do to for student. I know it can help a student grow with knowledge of architecture. I am ready for my journey at Texas Tech University School of Architecture. Thank you for your time.

INTRODUCTION TO ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING

Instructor: Aaron Benefiel

This was a class that I enjoyed very much because we had the opportunity to make not only hand drawings but models as well. In this assignment our task was to design a floor plan focusing on the circulation. We were given the planes and we had to manage with certain restrictions.

The Latin Cousin

Objective: Based on the research of our given Latin American country we had to design a Renovation/Extension to the Nason House. The Nason House was designed by O.H Thorman under the wings of Henry Trost and was built in 1918 on the grounds of New Mexico State University. Nason House now is the Center of Latin-America & Border Studies at New Mexico State University. The country that I got to research was Ecuador. When I dived in to research it I found that Ecuador was very rich in history and traditions. I focused on a Hacienda called Ingapirca. This place was the sun temple for the Incas when they were around.

They built this place of only stone the same way they also built Machu Pichu. These cubed like stones were laid on top of each other without the use of adhe-sive. The local government encourages architects build-ing new buildings to have that connection, to use the concept of the “Cubes”. The “Cube” was my initial parti. So I played around with some cubes and came up with this design.

In the initial assignment we had to research an architect that was chosen by the instructor. We had to investigate buildings that the ar-chitect had designed and somehow combine two to three buildings into a collage and hand draw it. I chose The Shard in London, England because it was going up at the time and I just thought it is such an amazing building that is very functional.

Then we used the same architect and had to answer these questions, “What is it about this architect that made him so special? If he designed a place for gathering, what would this architect design? Again using the same architect we had to design a 25’x25’x25’ cube which was to be used as a gathering place.

Objective:To design a habitat at a camp site in the Dripping Spring Natural Area, in Las Cruces, New Mexico of no more than 100 sq ft. that will pro-mote the recharging of the mind, body and soul. A place of rest and relaxation that allows campers to rejuvenate overnight for the day ahead. Strongly consider the connection with the land.

Dripping Springs

Dripping Springs Natural Area is located 10 miles east of Las Cruces, New Mexico, on the west side od the Organ Mountains. We went up one of the trails that this spectacular place has to offer. Upon arriving to our camp site we discovered the kind of vegetation that grows and the type of wildlife that are found in the area and looked at any other piece for inspiration for our design. I chose the Red Hawk for my concept. I used the shape of the hawk’s beak and the way their wings open and close. I envisioned a hawk cover-ing its head for protection.

Objective: To design an information Hub and Arts installation park for students, visi-tors and tourists to New Mexico State Uni-versity Campus. The center will showcase art from students; promote New Mexico State University Campus and the hobbies and activities crucial to tourism industry in the Mesilla Valley. This park will provide the opportunity for the development of a Green Space that promotes art, art instal-lations and the circulation of a series of shady open air spaces; promotes family friendly community interaction and con-nects to the New Mexico State University campus physically and visually. This pro-posed information hub/arts installations had to be a maximum 1200 sq. ft. and can be multiple stories. All drawings are Hand-drawn. The program included:
