Ad Design Guidelines

Ads featured in Sophie magazine need to reflect the smart, sophisticated style that readers have come to expect from our magazine.

For best advertising results we recommend that ad designs also abide by the following standards.

Elegant, uncluttered designs are preferred, where the imagery is the focal point instead of text–heavy designs.

The ad design needs to be able to capture the reader’s attention, offering not just a product or a service but a lifestyle for the reader.

Creating a strong brand image for your business can also help you in designing more successful and effective ads.

Please refer to the following design tips for more information on designing your ads for Sophie magazine.

Color

Deriving the color from the main image used in the ad is one safe way to create unity between the image and the rest of the ad. Select the main dominant colors and use them for the text and background of the ad.

Layout

Create good flow. The eye needs to travel across the main areas, as shown with the red circles in the ads on the right.

Create hierarchy. Decide on the main elements to emphasise. Narrow down any copy to a few sentences. Make sure the most important feature are the most dominant in some way either by color, size or shape, while the rest go down in size and importance.

Ad Design SamplesThe two examples below show a business advertising their monthly special. Rather than having several specials or a large copy of text about the business, selecting one special per month is advised. Make the special the dominant feature. Make the rest of the copy smaller in scale and only keep essentials: address, logo, motto etc.

Ad Design SamplesThese two examples below show an ad highlighting their motto. If your business has strong identity—when it comes to ad design, less is more. A clean, simple layout works the best. Remember, choose the elements to reflect your identity: the photograph, the logo, the font choice can work together to create a strong brand image.
