INTRODUCTION

The 2010 Commonwealth Games, officially known asthe XIX Commonwealth Games, were held

in Delhi, India, from 3 to 14 October 2010.

A total of 6,081 athletes from 71 Commonwealth nations

and dependencies competed in 21 sports and 272 events,

making it the largest Commonwealth Games to date.

The initial total budget estimated by the Indian Olympic

Association in 2003 for hosting the Games

was 1,620 crore (US$294.84 million).

In 2010, however, the official total budget soon escalated toan estimated 11,500 crore (US$2.09 billion), a figure whichexcluded non-sports-related infrastructure development.

Business Today magazine estimated that the Gamescost 60,000 crore (US$10.92 billion).

The opening ceremony featured over 8,000 performers, andlasted for two-and-a-half hours.

It is estimated that 350 crores (US$77 million) were spent

to produce the ceremony.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games are reportedly the mostexpensive Commonwealth Games ever.

The reason they said is, if youre going to be

hosting thousands of foreigners in a city wherespicy Methi Matar Malai is the regional specialty,toilet paper is one commodity you dont want toskimp on.

Suresh Kalmadi, head of the organizingcommittee says a sum of

Rs 25,200 crore has been

allocated to hire a timemachine for Commonwealth

Games organizers.

When asked where the timemachine was, Kalmadi pointed

to a Raleigh Cycle parked at

the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium.
