TV TrailerTV TrailerOne common feature used in soap TV trailers is a collection of shots from various episodes within the soap series. This isintended to give the audience an idea of what will be appearing inthe soap, but not enough information to give away any plotsecrets. We have included this in our promotion and by doing thiswe hope to encourage people to watch by causing them to askquestions that can only be answered by watching the nextepisodes.

Another convention we have used in our trailer that is often found in soap promotions, is musicto stimulate certain emotions amongst our audience. We have chosen sad and somewhatromantic music in our piece that gradually buildsup in to a more dramatic feeling piece. We chosethis to show that what might look like a happyrelationship is actually supported by lies andscandal. We can see the use of emotive music is

also used in the ‘neighbours’ advert to show thefeelings of the characters in the situation,

Many soaps aimed at mid to late teenagers, such asHollyoaks , use young protagonists so that the audiencecan relate to the characters and the situations withinthe soap. Soaps also, often contain storylines such aslove triangles and criminal acts. We have used allyoung characters and stereotypical soap storylines inour soap advert in order to attract our target audience.

In Hollyoaks most of the

characters are young so as torelate to the target audience. This screenshot shows anexample of some of thecharacters.

This link goes to a TV trailer for Neighbours using aselection of shots from other episodes like we havedone in ours. This is a typical convention of a soapas it gives the viewer a broad taste of what theprogramme involves.

This link goes to our TV trailer;St Andrew’s Road.

We chose to make our soap slightly different to other soapsbecause even though many soaps have young characters in,they often have older characters too however our entire castwas young and we chose to base it entirely around their lives. We also set our soap at the later time of 9pm whereas mostsoaps are shown at prime time; around 6pm. This is becausewe intend for our soap to contain more realistic and possiblyexplicit scenes. However we still used the same charactersthroughout the series and had all the stereotypical conventions

such as regular places to meet, a stereotypical setting andcharacters, e.g. the betrayer, the ‘boyfriend stealer’ and thevictim.

TV Trailer cont…TV Trailer cont…We included short bits of text within our piece; thewords ‘How can one person change everything?’ Thisforces the audience to ask questions, thereforehopefully encouraging them to watch the programme. We also put the text before and after a scenesuggesting an arson attack, making the audiencequestion what could anyone do to drive a person towant to commit such a violent crime. This, again, isintended to be an incentive to watch the soap. This isnot always used in soap advertise, but most commonlyin film trailers. By using this in our piece it makes thesoap advertised seem that bit more epic and on alarger scale.

This screenshot is from a Neighbourstrailer asking the audience about the fateof one of the key characters, similar towhat we did in ours which can be seenbelow.

At the end of the TV trailer we used a street sign toadvertise the name of the programme making it standout and noticeable. We then also added the time, daysand channel logo for the channel it would be shown onso that the audience knew exactly when it would beshown. This is a technique often used in soap advertsso that the viewers know exactly when and where theprogramme will be shown.

This screenshot is from a Coronation Street trailer with thestreet sign with the title of the soap and also, underneaththe channel and time. To the right of this image are

screenshots of the titles for our soap also showing thename of the soap and the time it is on.

PosterPoster

Both posters include the title of the soap. The font onboth is similar to that of a street sign reflecting thesetting of the soap and making it easy to read. It isalso written in a colour that contrasts to the rest of theposter so that it stands out

Our poster includes aquestion aimed at theconsumer to encourage themto watch the forthcomingepisodes to find the answer.Any other soapadvertisements, such as theone shown, don’t and include

much less text.

Many posters advertising soaps use images depicting realistic situations or settings as we can see in the ‘Coronation Street’ example. However in our poster

we decided to use a false image with three of the main characters to show theaudience what is to come in upcoming episodes and hit at possible outcomes. Byhaving the characters in the pose that they are, it shows the audience they areoblivious to what is to come, which is shown by the flames in the background.

By using a picture of the setting of the soap it allows the target audience to see it is an ordinary neighbourhood whichthey can relate to, encouraging them to watch the programme. However we chose to show an event which has nothappened yet making the audience ask questions which is unusual for a soap to give information away via a poster. If we were to repeat the task we may use a picture of the setting so that the audience get an idea of where thecharacters are, and how they are similar.

By using the magazine, this allows the consumer an insight in to multiple storylines withinthe soap rather than a single storyline which is advertised in the poster. Magazines are

also another item which many of our target audience purchase and read so it works wellto promote our soap to the correct audience. By promoting the soap through magazineswe can attract many more viewers than if we just advertised on television because notonly do individuals purchaser magazines, if there is something of interest in one, theyoften lend it or show it to others which, through word of mouth, again attracts moreviewers. The poster helps to highlight a key storyline which was

hinted at within both the magazine and the TV trailer. Byputting it on a poster it exaggerates the drama of thestoryline making it sound exciting and engaging. The poster informs the consumer that it will be one of the threecharacters in the picture which will be involved in theincident; this gives the target audience more information than

just the trailer, but not enough to answer all questions posedby the promotion, therefore still encouraging them to watch.

The Trailer is the central piece to the promotion of our soap. This means that it is important for it to cover manyof the different issues raised in the soap so that the targetaudience know exactly what it is. The soap leavesenough untold so that the magazine and poster can addto the information given in the soap feeding the interest of the target audience and encouraging them to watch on.The trailer also poses the question ‘How can one personchange everything?’ Which again causes the consumer towant to watch upcoming episodes and encourages them

to buy the magazine to see if the answer is inside. This isalso the same purpose as having a question on theposter as well.

This is a screenshot from our soap trailer for St Andrew’s Road .

Over all, I feel the combination of the 3 promotional products we worked on was successful. This is because all threeshowed different aspects of the soap, and gave away small pieces of information that causes questions for the targetaudience. By using all three it gained access to various target audience members that perhaps, not all of the productscould have done individually. Also, our advertising methods opened up new advertising methods such as word of mouthwhich is very successful in promotion.

All of our pieces show the same three characters telling the target audience that they will bekey characters in the upcoming plot. By showing them in all three advertisement methods theconsumer will be able to figure out the they are important and something of a large scale willhappen involving them. But, the consumer doesn’t know what thus, encouraging them towatch the forth coming episodes.

stages? – Research & Planningstages? – Research & PlanningWhen planning our TV trailer we used an animaticstoryboard. This allowed us to easily view the individualshots that we would be taking for our production. It alsomade deleting or adding shots much easier than if wehad produced it in another programme such asMicrosoft Word. We used Premiere Elements to editour anomatic storyboard and deleted or cut shots wereneeded which was much easier than doing it using aWord document as it did not mean changing the entirefile. This meant, when it came to filming, we knewexactly what we were doing.

This link shows you the Animatic Storyboard used to help our planning.

This year we were introduced to a website called‘Wet Paint’. On this wiki we uploaded and organisedall of the stages of the production of our finalproducts. This allowed us to upload first drafts of various pieces and see what improvements we couldmake and have made. It is also a convenient place todisplay all of our media work and makes it easy for others to access.

This is a print screen of one of the pages of our wiki.

When looking at similar media products we used websites sucha Youtube to help us find similar films. Using this website madefinding helpful clips easy and they were also easy to access. Allvideos came with an embed code which was extremely helpfulas it meant sharing them on to our wiki was very straightforward.

To edit our work we used Premiere elements. This made it easy to cut or add scenes or music. The program was easy to use and allowed us to create an animatic storyboard which was veryuseful in the planning for our TV trailer. Premiere Elements also made adding text and music toour piece very easy as well. However, the program often ran very slowly which meant simpleediting tasks could take longer than necessary and we were sometimes unable to make certainedits because of this. For example we wanted to cut the long scene showing the malecharacter discovering a text message on his cheating girlfriend’s phone. We wanted to

add a shot of the phone just after the character notices she has a message and then cut to the row. However problems with Adobe meant we were not able to edit the film or eve nopen our project, but if we were, we would have added the extra film.

To film our production we used a hand-held Samsung video camera. This meant that it was very easy to film in various locations as therewas not a large amount of equipment to carry around as the only other piece we used was a tripod. The cameras were very easy to use andstored all of our footage on to SD cards, which made the transferral of work from camera to PC very easy and quick. The tripods meant thatwe were able to get stable and level shots for each of our cameraangles. The pivot also meant that we were able to move the cameraeasily whilst filming and it enabled us to get the spinning shot of thetrees very easily and successfully.

We made rough cuts of our TV trailer so we could get avague idea of how the finished product would look. Thishelped us to decided any additional cuts that needed tobe made and give us ideas for possible transitions thatwe could use. We used Adobe Premiere to edit our production and add all transitions and Youtube toupload and embed all of our film.

This camera is very similar to the one that we usedwhen filming our soaptrailer.

This screenshows AdobePremiere, whichis the programwe used to editour work.

We can see from this graph that 100% of our targetaudience asked, said that they felt that the musicwas well suited to the trailer and the scenes withinit. When editing our film we made sure that themusic and the emotions the music portrayedmatched the emotions shown by the characters inour piece; this audience feedback tells us that our technique worked.

Here we can see that all of our target audience askedsaid that the poster was relevant to the storyline of theplot. This is important because all of our ancillary taskshave to relate strongly to the soap to avoid misleadingor confusing the target audience. If the consumers areunsure about the topics within the soap they are lesslikely to watch it. When producing our poster we chosethe main protagonists and one of the main eventswithin the soap to attract our target audience.

We asked several people from our target audience aged 15 – 20, to look at all of our tasks and decided how effectively theyfelt they worked together and whether they would be interested in any of them. We then collected the results to see howsuccessful we had been with our products.

This graph shows us that 100% of our target audience, that we asked, said that the TV trailer made them wantto watch further episodes. This is important becausethe trailer is designed to give the consumer smallpieces of information about the storyline, but notenough to give any key information away, encouragingour target audience to watch. We did this by askingquestions during the advert, and leaving themunanswered and also showing quick shots of differentscenes from the soap to give the consumer an idea of

what’s to come.

Here we can see that two of our target audience

members felt that speech could have improvedour trailer. Therefore, if we were to do the taskagain, we would, maybe, produce a piece like theNeighbours trailer (shown on the second slide)where a small amount of speech is used showingthe emotions a particular character is feeling anddemonstrating the situation they are in .

This graph shows that not all of our target audienceunderstood the storylines shown in our TV trailer. Therefore, if we were to do the piece again, we coulduse more speech and/or text to explain what variousshots showed.

This shows that 100% of our target audience

asked said that the magazine cover madethem want to watch the full soap. We used asimilar technique as in the TV trailer; we gavethe consumer small amounts of informationabout upcoming episodes, causing them to askquestions which could only be answered bywatching the soap. We can see from theseresults that the technique worked.

These results show that not all of our target audiencethought that the poster really showed what the soap wasabout. This means, that if we were going to do the taskagain, we would try and show more of the storylines withinthe soap so that it didn’t mislead the target audience. In our poster we showed only one of the storylines, not giving theconsumer an idea of the range of topics that would befeatured in future episodes.

For our audience feedback we asked several members of our target audience ranging from 15 years to 20 years old. Weasked them to look at our film and ancillary tasks and asked them how effective they felt that they were. By doing this we

hoped to gain a perspective of our target audience and how the perceive our work. This has helped us to better our workand make it more relevant and appealing to our target audience. Over all our feedback was good and we found it veryhelpful with our work. Audience feedback is very important with media products, such as the ones that we have produced, because it allows us to see what we can do to improve our products in order to get ultimate consumer satisfaction. If weare able to please are consumers with our pieces then future products can be better and much more successful, ultimatelybenefiting us or a production company.
