Don’t panic!
• Look at how much each section is worth, and divide your studying time accordingly
• READ THE QUESTIONS CAREFULLY!
• Eat and sleep properly the day of
• Once you’re in the exam, allot time to each section according to what it is worth
• EXAMPLES, EXAMPLES, EXAMPLES
• Refer back to the question you are answering constantly-are you addressing what is being asked of you?
• Thesis statements are IMPORTANT for the essay question-are you being asked to take a position on an issue? Are you being asked to make an argument?
• Make sure you are being CLEAR and FOCUSED when you are writing!
• Don’t forget about the flip side of the coin; are you comparing post-modernity to modernity, asked how things have changed?

• Benedict Anderson: Imagined Communities• The modern nation-state is an imagined
political community, imagined as both limited (with borders) and sovereign (self-governing)
• It’s imagined because even in the smallest nation, you’ll never know most of your fellow citizens
• Media like newspapers aid with these feelings of community
Structuralism vs. Post-Structuralism
• Structuralism: set of theories that emphasize the things that structure human behaviours and systems of meaning
• Cultural activity analyzed scientifically• Binary oppositions• Post-structuralism: theories that followed and
criticized structuralism. Examines practices left out of a structuralist view of society, moves beyond the closed system of structuralist logic
