  • CHAPTER 1: ACE & IZANA

VERSE OF THE SOLDIER WHO HAVE LOST HIS NAME

Izana was making his way through the burnt city. On the way, he encountered two

Byakko soldiers which he attempted to kill but unfortunately got wounded by one of them. He

persevered on to keep his promise of delivering the COMM system to Ace.

Flashback to a month ago, Izana's job in times of peace involves hunting down Coeurls

which are considered dangerous to civilians. After the job, he returned to the Peristylium to

report his work but found the Command Room to be in chaos. Military commanders and

officers are all busy flustering over a report that Byakko has been secretly developing military

weaponry and that it is highly possible that they will enter a full-fledged war. The Commandant

then interrupted Izana's conversation with his officer-in-charge and told him to be prepared for

    the worst.

After being dismissed, Izana lamented on the fact that he was over twenty years of age

and his magical powers are not as strong as those below twenty. Initially, he had aspired to

become a candidate but has failed the harsh examinations. He then decided that he might as

well go to the chocobo stables since he's already in the Peristylium anyway.

There he spotted Ace who was gently stroking a chocobo's head. When Izana asked him

if he liked chocobos, his expression hardened and coldly asked back if there's anything strange

about it. After learning that Izana too likes chocobos, he softened and said that people see him

as strange for showing concern to military tools. Izana then said that they can be friends to

which Ace replied that they just met. Izana said that "People who like chocobos cannot possibly

be bad." That was their Ace and Izana's first meeting.

They chatted briefly about Ace's past after the introduction. Izana commented about

how Ace has been a candidate for 10 years but not once has Izana ever seen him around. Ace

said that this was his first time coming to the Peristylium; all along he has been in the External

Bureau. Izana asked if he was a genetically modified human to which Ace laughed and said that

    he wasn't.

Later, Izana commented that Ace has a similar atmosphere as his brother does, saying

that his brother belonged to Class 2. Izana then voiced his opinion about not wanting his

brother to be involved in the war because he's too kind. Ace skeptically asked if anyone from

Class 2, a military-based class, can be considered 'kind'. Izana also said that he would rather the

  • fighting be left to the grown-ups, but said that it was impossible since in this country, the

younger ones are stronger. He also said that he wanted to be a brother who can be prided.

Ever since that day, Ace would appear in the chocobo stables from time to time. Izana

found Ace to have extensive knowledge on magic, military and war, but his knowledge on other

areas to be shockingly lacking. When Ace revealed that he is in Class Zero, Izana was surprised

as Class Zero is said to have ceased to exist for 100 years. As of that moment, Class Zero is

placed under the External Bureau and until the situation calls for it; their existence is still kept

as a top secret even from the army. It was then that Ace asked if Izana would support Class Zero

when the time comes. Izana hesitated at first but finally agreed.

As the person-in-charge of communicating with Class Zero, Izana trained relentlessly,

often with Ace. Ace's card is revealed to automatically replenish itself to 53 pieces. Izana asked

Ace what was his reason for fighting and Ace simply said that it was because Mother asked him

to. He has no fear of dying and forgetting the dead, saying that even if his friends die, the

crystal will make him forget anyway. Izana then requested that if he dies on the battlefield, Ace

shouldn't look back at him, saying that there's no time for that while at war.

Back in the present, on that fated day, Izana met Arecia who told him that only Class

Zero can destroy the crystal jammer and entrusted the COMM system to Izana. Had he been

able to use magic, Izana wouldn't have had problems fending off the Byakko soldiers.

As per the events in the game, Izana ended up riding Chichiri after it saved him. As he

rode, Izana remembered the past when his village was destroyed by Byakko. He was only 13 but

resolved to protect Machina and Rem. Rem ended up being adopted and when he was 15 he

took the candidate entrance test but failed.

As his consciousness gradually faltered, he fell off Chichiri's back and as 5-6 Byakko

soldiers approached him, he shouted for Ace. Ace came to his rescue along with Queen and

Nine and Izana successfully passed the COMM system to him. Attempting to fulfill his promise

to the dying Izana, Ace turned away from him, but at last turned back. Reading the anguished

expression on Ace's face, Izana finally realized that Ace wasn't as cold as he thought he was.

Glad of the fact, he finally made peace with dying and told Ace, Don't look back... Move

forward. Keep your eyes on the enemies beyond. And one day, topple Byakko and save this

    country.

  • CHAPTER 2: MACHINA AND REM

    MEMORIES OF THOSE WHO DISAPPEARED

As Ace's memories of Izana disappeared, a COMM from Arecia entered asking them to

destroy the crystal jammer located in the Arena.

As Ace, Queen and Nine entered the Arena, they met Machina and Rem, whom they ask

to leave the place immediately since they are unable to use magic. Eventually, they caused the

crystal jammer to explode but before they can confirm if Qun'mi is dead, she escaped.

Qun'mi later reported the existence of these "Red Magicians" to Cid Aulstyne. With the

failure of capturing Suzaku, Genbu and Sry would elevate the guards against Byakko, making

Cid's plan go awry. He then deployed Qun'mi for the "Northern Dawn Operation" which is the

setting off of the Ultima bomb in Genbu. Its a suicide mission. An operation she carried out

willingly to repay her debts to the High Commander before she lost her mind to the crystal

completely. Qun'mi who lost her parents in a territorial dispute entered the army to take

revenge on Suzaku. When she became an outstanding weapons researcher, Cid took notice of

her and took her under his wing.

4 hours after the Liberation Operation, Class Zero was talking to Arecia when the Ultima

Bomb cast a blinding light in the night sky. Plans for an alliance with Sry were quickly sealed.

Despite the impending danger, the l'Cie Zhuyu refused to take part in the war, forcing

the Parliament to deploy the candidates instead.

As Class Zero took up their seats in their classroom for the first time, Kurasame was

introduced to be their officer-in-charge. When Nine antagonized him, Kurasame punched him.

As Nine tried to fight back, Kurasame raised his Icy Sword against him, forcing him to stand

down. Queen reprimanded Nine, saying that Kurasame has gotten Mother's approval for this.

Kurasame later introduced Rem and Machina and left the classroom.

Left to their own greetings and introductions, the whole class introduced themselves

one by one. After which Machina and Rem offered to take them on a tour around the

Peristylium, to which only Ace agreed to come along. Ace later voiced his regret at not being

able to come earlier to save more people during the Liberation Mission. But Machina and Rem

told him that since they were facing lCie, it's understandable.

  • When they reached the graveyard, Ace voiced his puzzled opinion on why people should

come here mourning for the dead when no one can even remember them. Machina said that it

may be pointless but he wants to at least remember that someone who was close to him has

died. Ace's COMM suddenly rang after a brief story on Machina and Rem's past. It was Arecia,

asking him to come to the Magic Department for his regular check-up.

Before he could enter the Magic Department, voices can be heard. Arecia was arguing

with the Commandant of the deployment of Izana Kunagiri without his consent. Ace learnt that

he was the one who wished for Izana to be deployed. The Commandant then stormed off after

a stern warning to Arecia saying that the Magic Department doesn't have control over the

army. Ace hid from his sight as he passed.

Upon seeing Ace, Arecia returned to her motherly figure. Ace later admitted to Arecia

that he overheard the conversation. Arecia told him not to be bothered by people dying since

people can only move forward without being chained to the past. That's what the Death

    Memory Lapse is about.

As Ace returned to the classroom, he found Machina, Rem, Nine and Queen talking

about reasons for fighting, and joined them. Rem told them about how Byakko developed

biological weapons and how the virus spread to their village, killing everyone. Machina and

Rem is said to have immunity against the virus. Machina then said that his reason for fighting is

not to lose anyone important in Byakko's hands anymore.

The conversation then drifted back to the topic of Izana, making Ace uncomfortable. He

then asked what Machina's brother was like, confusing Machina since he doesn't remember

Izana. Machina then asked if Ace felt an empty space possibly due to having known Izana, which

Ace denied. The alarm then sounded denoting time for mission.

Ace's spontaneous question at Kurasame made Kurasame frown, asking if Ace knew

'manners'. Ace simply gave Kurasame a confused look, at which Kurasame gave up trying to

explain 'manners'. They are then briefed on the mission to take back 4 Suzaku cities occupied

by Milites. Ace ended up in a team with only Machina and Rem. He was taken aback by

Kurasame's decision since he has never been forced to operate separately from his 11

classmates before. He also felt that Machina and Rem are different from them who are raised

in the External Bureau. Nevertheless, he set off for McTighe City with them.

As they toppled enemies after enemies, Ace began to recognize Machina and Rem's

abilities, finally feeling that having to fight with them wasn't so bad after all. They later

encountered Qator Bashtar who challenged them on his mech, Gabriel. Gabriel came with a

magic wall defense system, absorbing magic. Rem later realized that the defense system does

not nullify all the magic. Part of it still causes damage. With Rem chanting the incantation for

  • Thundaga, Ace used all 53 of his cards to distract Qator, slowing him down. As the magic hit

Gabriel and cause him to fall, Machina created a hole in its armor at which Ace directed his 53

cards down at. Qator retreated and McTighe City was liberated.

As the 3 of them sat down at the city square as the soldiers and civilians are celebrating,

they talked. Ace admitted and apologized to Machina that it was his fault that Izana died.

    Machina and Rem were dumbfounded.

Ace: The responsibility of your brother's death lies with me. But....I want you to listen without

getting angry. Why do you care so much about the dead?

We are Class Zero, Suzaku's strongest candidates. We cannot stand still. We cannot afford to

reminisce and look back. Isn't that so?

Machina: It's not about looking back. It's about recognizing the gravity of what we have lost

and changing it to strength. There is no point in simply forgetting.

    Ace:.....

Machina: I lost my memories of my brother. Even though he must certainly be a good brother, I

can't even grieve for him. It's as if I lost one part of my heart myself... From here on, I am afraid

of losing someone important to me.

But that's why I want to protect those who are still living by my side. Rem, of course, and even

those who have just became my comrades. How about you, Ace?

Ace: I... I've been taught to throw away all those feelings. We cannot fight while being afraid of

    losing our comrades-

Rem: But Ace, you saved us didn't you? A little while ago. And the first time we met too.

Ace: Well, that's... I'll save whom I can save.

    Machina: .... Then that's fine.

    Ace: Eh?

Machina: You saved Rem and I. That's why, at that time, you definitely must have tried to save

my brother too. Its because you're that kind of person.

  • Ace: Even though we just met, what can you tell about me? Do you see me as that kind a

    person?

Machina: Yeah, I do. At first glance you're a cool person. But you're a good person.

    Ace: .... You're weird.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    CHAPTER 3: QUEEN AND KURASAME

THE QUEEN AND THE GRIM REAPER

Two months after Suzaku's reversal operation, Suzaku managed to regain control of

much land area which was occupied by Byakko.

Queen has been silently observing Machina and Rem since they were admitted to Class

Zero. Though doubtful at first, with people like Ace and Nine first warming up to Machina and

Rem, the others soon follow suit. But Machina and Rem aren't Queen's only worries.

Just then, Nine entered the cafeteria, where Queen, Ace, Machina and Rem were,

bickering loudly with Kurasame. Apparently, Nine's operation the previous night was nitpicked

by Kurasame. As Kurasame leaves, Nine complained that he was hungry and that Kurasame

followed him all the way here to lecture him. Concerned, Queen asked Ace, Machina and Rem

how they felt regarding Kurasame. Ace said that he's not as strongly opposed to him as Nine

was, but nevertheless he said that he kind of disliked him because Kurasame is excessively

strict. Machina said that he doesn't hate nor like him, but get a strong impression of not

knowing what he's thinking of. Rem, on the other hand, said that he's a good commander as he

gives good orders. While Queen herself felt that a commander being strict is reasonable, she

felt that the tension will become an obstacle if it carries on. Curious as to how the other classes'

relationship with their commanders, Queen sets off for the Arena with Machina and Rem to

    visit Machina's former Class 2.

Class 2's graduates have always become military officers prompting their commander to

take up a strict teaching style. Nevertheless, their commander beamed when Machina called

out to him and he explained that they (as commanders and candidates) simply have to trust in

one another. As Class 2's commander returned to his post, Rem explained about Class 7's

  • commander. Class 7 is a class specializing in support and majority of the students are female,

including their commander. Rem said that their class emphasized a lot on 'kindness'.

Machina then asked Queen why she bothers so much. Queen said that it is her duty.

Machina asked if she is like the Class President to which Queen said she wasn't. She said that

Class Zero consisted of many individualistic and unique people, and it somehow naturally fell on

her shoulders to take care of their well-being. She also mentioned Ace being stubborn and Nine

as impulsive and straightforward. With all sorts of personalities, it was hard to form a common

opinion. Just then a Moogle came bearing a message for Queen saying that Arecia was looking

    for her.

Queen poured out her feelings to Arecia, asking her why she chose Kurasame as their

commander. Arecia told her about the 'Four Heavenly Kings' and how one of them betrayed the

other three. She said that the truth as to why the traitor betrayed them remained forever

unknown because no one can remember him, not even Kurasame. And it is precisely because

Kurasame closed his heart from everyone else that Arecia found him suitable to take charge of

Class Zero. Class Zero being a special existence can be focused on in both a negative and

positive light by everyone else, but that wouldn't give Class Zero a good influence. But since

Kurasame doesn't take any heed of other people, he would remain unbiased no matter what.

And even though Arecia said that she doesn't care if the relationship between Class Zero and

Kurasame is bad as long as he carries out his duty, Queen resolved to improve the situation

    herself.

When Kurasame held a study session, half the class refused to turn up. Ace said that it's

not needed. Nine said that Kurasame is his enemy, and there's nothing to learn from an enemy.

Rem, observing Queen, asked if Queen liked Kurasame. Queen promptly denied it and silenced

    her.

On April 21st, Kurasame briefed them about a large scale operation to be held at

Togoreth Fort and warned them about the possibility of an encounter with a type A Byakko

l'Cie. He implored them to escape should they encounter the l'Cie, no matter what. The battle

then came to be known as the "Battle of Togoreth Fort".

Queen teamed up with Nine and Ace for the operation, first checking for survivors at the

prisons. Battles after battles, as luck would have it; they came face to face with Nimbus just as

Kurasame issued a command to withdraw. Nine winds up dead after attacking Nimbus

recklessly and Ace, in Nine's defense, stood up against Nimbus and was swiftly murdered as

well. Just as Nimbus was going to attack Queen, Kurasame appeared, shielding her. Kurasame

said that he came to buy time for Zhuyu who was heading to Togoreth Fort. The two held

Nimbus up for 57 seconds until Zhuyu arrived.

  • As the 2 lCie clash, Queen asked Kurasame to help her carry Ace and Nine's dead

bodies. A confused Kurasame asked why she wanted to burden herself with corpses. Queen

revealed to Kurasame that if they were brought to Arecia, they can be revived. She also asked

Kurasame if she can remember Ace and Nine, to which Kurasame said that he could.

As they headed out, Queen told Kurasame that she found him kind after seeing his

actions today and asked if he would display that kindness to other members. But Kurasame said

that it was pointless to display kindness in words only. Queen deduced that Kurasame didn't

believe in the value of words since those words can easily be forgotten.

Queen finally smiled at a puzzled Kurasame and said that she was glad that he was their

    commander.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    CHAPTER 4: NINE AND SICE

FEAR WHICH TRANSCENDS THE SPEED OF SOUND

The Battle of Togoreth Fort ends with Suzaku and Sry's joint victory. However, the

fort itself was completely destroyed in the battle between Type-LCie.

A week after the battle, Nine, Queen and Ace were sitting in the Class Zero classroom

discussing the war. When Nine gloated over his confidence in defeating Byakko in battle, Sice

cut in, reminding Nine that Byakko had a greater military force. They end up bickering and Sice

said that it is excruciating to think that they are comrades. After which she said that even

though they are all in the same class, she cannot rely on all of them, especially Machina and

Rem, the newcomers. Machina turned in shock and Rem stuttered an apology. Sice continued

saying that if they ever become a hindrance in battle, she'll kill them herself before storming

out of the classroom. Queen said that ever since they were still in the External Bureau, Nine and

Sice's cat-and-dog relationship has always been what worries her the most. Ace, being used to

    it, simply shrugged.

Their next mission came after another week with Kurasame showing them a photo of

Gabriel, Qator's mech. He explained that the mechs are dangerous and their mission involves

destroying them in Byakko facilities. The main team, Ace, Queen, King, Seven, Cinque, Trey,

Cater and Eight were to attack the factory with the other 3 teams of 2 attacking other facilities

  • as distractions. The other teams are Machina with Rem, Jack with Deuce and Nine with Sice.

    Nine protested to no avail.

After the briefing, Deuce approached Nine and asked him to take it easy on Sice, saying

that Sice isn't a bad person even with her harsh mannerisms.

Nine and Sice reached a facility containing garages of Colossuses all lined up. Nine

recklessly begun the attack, prompting the alarm to ring. They stood there, back to back,

fighting off Byakko soldiers to buy the main team time. Sice also fired Fire magic at the garages

of Colossuses as she fought, destroying them.

After finishing off the last enemy in the area, Nine said that Sice has been acting even

more irritable ever since the war begun. Sice then relented, saying that she has never spoken

about the past before, much so with him.

Sice told her about how she was abandoned by her mother when she was 7. Her father

was never around to begin with. In a town named Pamidora which has been wiped off the map,

she grew up stealing with a gang. When they got busted by Byakko soldiers, the gang betrayed

her. Wanting to know the whereabouts of her 'friends', Byakko soldiers took her out in the

snow where she collapsed. After which she was adopted by Arecia. Taken into warmth, given a

delicious soup, it was then that her loyalty stuck with Arecia.

Just then, a shot by a sniper struck Nine's leg. Yet the sniper cannot be seen. Digging a

hole with his lance, Nine pulled Sice into it to escape the sniper's scope. But staying there will

mean death if the sniper attracted more enemies to the area, hence the 2 decided to run in the

direction of the gunshot, and try their best to dodge the incoming bullets. As he ran, Nine

became reminded of his past. All he remembered was a fire and a man asking him to run away.

As they were nearing their targets, a bullet found its mark in Sice's leg. Without thinking,

Nine turned back for Sice but Sice shouted at him to go ahead. Nine dug up another hole and

pulled Sice in. It turned out that Sice had another wound on her abdomen and she soon passed

out. Nine then finished up his job.

Sice woke up to find herself on a bed in a village near the border. Nine had cured her

wound but admitting that he wasn't good with magic, asked her to check up with Arecia later.

Then, Sry appeared outside bearing a message from Andoria, informing them of the

ceasefire. Infuriated and confused, they set off to meet up with the rest.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • CHAPTER 5: DEUCE AND JACK

ONE DAY I'LL SHOW YOU MY REAL SMILE

Just as Nine and Sice did, Jack and Deuce encountered Sry as well, bearing the same

message from Andoria. Perplexed, Deuce communicated with Ace through COMM. However,

the connection was disjointed. Deuce barely made out Ace telling them that they're in the

Byakko capital, everyone was safe, the connection wasn't safe and asking them to come and

    group up.

As they reached Ingram, Deuce and Jack were taken to the 12th floor of Hotel Armada

where they met up with the rest of Class Zero. Ace told them of their encounter with Brionac

which was equipped with 8 ultima bombs. As they were discussing about the bad timing of the

ceasefire, Kurasame entered and told them that Suzaku higher-ups were in a meeting regarding

this. An infuriated Ace stood up and demanded to know why Suzaku agreed to the ceasefire at

a crucial moment like this. Kurasame said that Byakko has wholly stated their criteria for a

compromise and Suzaku has no reason to refuse. Deuce asked if Byakko was planning

something to which Kurasame said that as long as the treaty suited them, it would be their gain.

He added that until the conference the next morning, they are free to do what they want.

After Kurasame left, they discussed what could Byakko possibly be planning. King

suggested an assassination of Suzaku's higher-up. Queen stated that if it was so, Suzaku's

higher-ups would have suspected it. Furthermore with defenses like Kurasame, it would be

impossible. Eight suggested that they were buying time for further preparation but Trey said

that re-starting the war after a ceasefire would be pointless. But Deuce cut in Trey's long-

winded explanation, saying that there is a possibility of them trying to develop mechs like

Gabriel and the Crystal Jammer properly before re-starting the war. Gabriel and the Crystal

Jammer were only experimental products as of that moment. More discussion ensued to no

avail until Jack suggested taking a break by walking around Ingram.

The main team, along with Machina and Rem, were too tired and refused the offer. Nine

and Sice stated that they wouldn't want to be walking around enemy territories. In the end,

only Jack and Deuce took the stroll. Jack voiced his awe at the high-rise buildings that Byakko

built to which Deuce gave an explanation on Magiteks. The Byakko crystal, as she explained,

provided Magitek Energy to move machinery. Unlike the Suzaku crystal that ceased providing

powers to those above 20, Byakko civilians still continue to receive the crystal's blessings

without any age limits. Hence the average age in the Byakko army being higher than that of the

    Suzaku army.

  • As Jack asked why Byakko not uses such wonderful powers for the purpose of peace,

Qator suddenly appeared and answered that circumstances forced them into war. The infertile

lands of Byakko made the people hungry and their pleas for help to Suzaku and Sry fell on

deaf ears. Knowing that their only chance of survival was war, it was then, 10 years prior, that

Cid Aulstyne stood up as their leader.

As Qator took his leave, Jack commented that humans are savage creatures, that even

without the Death Memory Lapse, they will continue fighting. Deuce was saddened by his

    comment.

Deuce then remembered the past. Her parents died in a territorial dispute and as Arecia

took her in, all she did was cry. Jack approached her one day and asked her whether her

parents died. Deuce's first impression on him wasn't nice, but Jack went on to explain that his

parents were killed in a robbery of their family store. He then told her to smile, saying that even

a fake smile will turn into a real one someday. Since then, they became close friends. Whenever

Deuce plays her flute, Jack would dance along.

However, presently, Deuce felt that Jack has somewhat changed since 10 years ago. She

felt that Jack, although always cheerful, says cold-hearted statements sometimes.

As snow began to fall, Deuce and Jack who were unaccustomed to the cold weather

returned to the hotel storeroom (yes they are in a storeroom instead of a room). As they

reached the room, Andoria was standing in the middle of the room. Just as in the game,

Andoria warned them that continuing the war will bring about destruction. She added that she

is l'Cie, hence understanding the crystal's will. She also said that they are the most important

    cogwheels in this world.

Just then, Andoria was sniped. As Deuce tried to heal her, Andoria stopped her, saying

that this is within her predictions. Her final words were that this was her focus as l'Cie and

crystallized afterwards. An enraged Celestia jumped out of the window to pursue the sniper.

They quickly realized that they were to be the scapegoats in Byakko's plans and tried to

contact Kurasame to no avail. Left with no choice, they escaped.

Exhausted from their previous battle, only Deuce, Jack, Machina and Rem had any magic

left within them. Still, they fought with every ounce of their strength and tore out of the hotel

and through the city. When finally they encountered Ines, Qun'mi's subordinate.

Deeming Qun'mi's fate to be their fault, Ines seeks revenge against Class Zero on her

scorpion mech, Vajra. After a huge explosion, everyone except for King, Trey, Nine, Sice,

Machina, Rem and Deuce lay lifeless beneath a pile of rubble. As the fighting ensues, one by

  • one they fell until only Deuce was left standing. Bur before Ines can finish Deuce off, Jack

appeared from beneath the rubble and supported her. He reminded her that whenever she

plays the flute, he'll dance, making Deuce realize that he hadn't changed after all. With the

magic from Deuce's flute as support, Jack finished off Vajra.

As Jack collapsed, Deuce cried. Jack told her to smile, which she did, believing his words

to be true; that one day even a fake smile will turn real. Content, Jack closed his eyes.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    CHAPTER 6: MACHINA

    ANSWER

Machina was standing in the darkness when someone approached him. It was Izana

who came to ask him to choose whether he wants to continue living or leave with him. He

answered by saying that he wants to continue fighting. When asked why he can remember

Izana all of a sudden, Izana replied, "the mind forgets, but the soul remembers".

Machina was later woken up by a frantic Rem. He was, however, unable to remember

his dream. Rem said that they are on the outskirts of Byakko territory. Machina asked if Deuce

carried all of them all the way here, to which Rem said that Arecia transported them. She also

said that the 2 of them have only lost consciousness as opposed to actually dying. Machina

begun to feel unhappy about Arecia's attitude, thinking that she left her own children in enemy

territories. No matter how dangerous, he disagreed with Arecia's decision.

As he exited the house, he found the rest of Class Zero who voiced their worries about

Machina not waking up. He later asked if they don't feel bitter that they continue fighting and

training all their lives and yet the Suzaku higher-ups don't reward them at all. Ace replied saying

that he doesn't feel bitter at all. With everyone around, he in fact enjoys it. To which one by

one, all the other members voiced their agreement. Machina and Rem, however, were hurt by

their answer. They felt that these children never knew that other lifestyles exist for them to

choose from and they resolved to help them anyway they can.

Soon they changed shifts with those patrolling. Machina set off alone in the forest and

soon after found Qun'mi, looking as though she was going to topple soon. (She's not encased in

  • a rock here). Qun'mi told Machina that her focus was to choose the next l'Cie and offered

    Machina to be her successor.

Qun'mi: So choose, boy.... Your mind should be made up by now...!

Machina: No! I will not become l'Cie!

    Qun'mi: What....!?

Machina: My friends are human. Not magicians but full-fledged humans. That's why I'll remain

as a human, and fight until the end with them.

    Qun'mi: ....You'll regret it.

Machina: I don't mind. Even if I regret it, I'll overcome anything and someday reach our desired

    place together.

After which Machina released a fireball at Qun'mi.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    CHAPTER 7: MACHINA

    COGWHEEL

Ace was patrolling alone when he heard voices, that of the conversation between

Machina and Qun'mi. As Machina attacked Qun'mi, Ace approached them. But Qun'mi soon

rose back and drew the last of her powers to pass them on to someone else. Light from her

hand flew to the west and soon after, she crystallized.

The two then called back the rest of the members on patrol and regrouped at the

campsite. There, they discussed who mighty Qun'mi has passed her powers to. Judging from

the direction, they deduced it must be someone within the Byakko capital.

  • Just then, a COMM from Kurasame entered, all of them frantically tried to speak at the

same time until Kurasame requested for a rep to talk to. Ace stood up and Kurasame told him

that an airship will meet them at Juhanla Region. Kurasame also told them that as soon as they

return, they will be taken for questioning regarding the assassination of the Queen of Sry.

Shocked and angry, they, however, have no choice but to head out to the meeting point.

On the way, Queen told them that some of the Commandant doesn't get along well with

Arecia and probably used this event as a chance to grill them. With the army being dependent

on magic, Arecia can be seen as a central powerful figure in Suzaku. Machina and Rem then

promised to defend the others, not being Arecia's children and hence might be free from the

bias that the Commandant held against them.

Back at the Peristylium, the Commandant told them that to uphold the alliance with

Sry; at least one of them must become the scapegoat and be executed for the assassination

of Andoria, unless they can prove their innocence. Machina stood up saying that they have a

witness, Claes Celestia Misca Sancest. An envoy was then sent to Concordia to fetch Celestia to

    serve as witness.

Class Zero waited the whole night at the interrogation room until finally Celestia arrived.

She testified that she has caught the sniper who shot Andoria and that Sry knew the truth

that Byakko killed their beloved Queen, boosting the people of Sry's morale to fight the war.

Previously, they were reluctant to go to war. With Suzaku and Sry's alliance renewed, Class

Zero was finally allowed to leave, with Celestia remaining behind to discuss military strategies

    with the Commandant.

As they leave the room, they were greeted by Arecia. Between their happy cries of

reunion and being acquitted, Machina suddenly asked for a private word with Arecia.

At the school terrace, Arecia greeted Machina coldly, asking him to cut straight to the

point as she's busy. Machina demanded to know why Arecia left her children in enemy

territories back when they were escaping Byakko. Arecia said that she needed to prioritize her

not getting killed, or else they can't be revived either. Machina continued saying that Class Zero

are not her tools, they need love and care too. Arecia countered this, asking what he knows of

them, having only just met them. Machina said that even though Class Zero never once

complained, never once admitted that they're sad, scared, lonely, or bitter, he can feel it. Arecia

finally said that Machina is a threat to them. That he will make them weak for she believed that

only by throwing away emotions can they be strong. Machina subsequently asked her, what her

true motives are. Arecia replied that she wanted to see if those children could become Agito. As

Machina grabbed Arecia's shoulders, he saw a strange vision: Red sky, boundless land, corpses

everywhere. And on the piles of corpses lay those with red mantles, their eyes lifelessly staring

  • at his direction. The vision went as quickly as it came, but Arecia was nowhere to be seen.

Machina resolved to stay with Class Zero no matter what Arecia says.

In Ingram, Cid was in a discussion with Qator. Qator showed Cid a recording made by

Ines who proved Ace and Nine being alive despite being killed by Nimbus earlier. Qator then

mentioned that the preparation for the 'Ragnarok' operation was complete. Just then, Colonel

Faith announced his return from Genbu and reported that the extraction of the Genbu crystal

was completed successfully. Cid ordered it to be sealed.

Cid then announced the birth of a new l'Cie, Qator, to the people. Qator recalled being

beaten by Class Zero in battle and longed for greater power. He sets out to follow Qun'mi's

    path.

Miles away, in Suzaku's underground mausoleum, Arecia stood in front of the Suzaku

crystal. She addressed the 2 lCie there saying, "the cogwheels have turned faster than

expected... the time will soon come for you to move."

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    CHAPTER 8: TREY AND CINQUE

    A WORLD IN A SPIRAL

On the day after the interrogation, as Trey headed out of the dorms, Cinque called out

to him from behind, wondering if he overslept. As the 2 made their way to class, they met

Celestia in the entrance hall who said that she hasn't slept all night, discussing tactics with the

Commandant. While Trey gave a proper, formal greeting, Cinque left Celestia in a surprise when

    she called her 'Hime-chan'.

People like Trey and Queen who reads a lot, understood manners from books. But most

of the other members of Class Zero are completely ignorant of it. Nevertheless, Celestia wasn't

mad at her. The 3 chatted for a while when Andoria's last words drifted into Trey's mind.

Andoria had said that her being killed at that time was her focus as lCie. The bell suddenly

chimed, interrupting their conversation as Trey and Cinque rushed to class.

They were greeted by Kurasame saying that they were 3 minutes late. But the class

didn't last long since Kurasame gave them permission to take a long-deserved break. Nine got

excited and asked if anyone else wants to go out and have fun. Machina replied by saying that

  • he wants to make use of his time training in the Arena, a suggestion quickly agreed on by Ace

and Rem. Nine then turned to Sice who said that what she does isn't any of Nine's business. Ace

then asked Trey whether he wants to take part, to which Trey declined, saying there's

something he wants to research on.

As Trey left the classroom to go to the library, he found Cinque at his tail. He

immediately realized that Cinque wanted to help him research just so that she could get away

without being invited to train with the others. Trey explained to her that all these while he

thought that lCie only move in the crystals' interest, but he found Andoria's actions to be

unnatural. This makes him think that all the lCie move because of a certain motive which he

    wants to find out.

The more they researched, the more bored Cinque apparently becomes. Nevertheless,

she continued keeping her word to Trey that she'll help, until she finally found a notebook with

    the name 'Zhuyu Voghfau Byot'.

The note tells Zhuyu's story of becoming lCie and his subsequent gradual loss of his

heart until it stops, which is probably when he truly lost his heart. The entries also included one

where his Class Zero friends got caught up in his fight with another l'Cie and accidentally got

killed by him. Trey wondered why Zhuyu, who hadn't taken action when the Peristylium was

under attack, came to Class Zero's aid during the 'Battle of Togoreth Fort'. Then, an idea struck

him as he rushed out saying he wants to talk to Zhuyu with Cinque at his heels.

On their way to the crystal room in the Underground Mausoleum, Trey talked about

how he wants to know everything. Cinque said that she's stupid, and that she's unable to help

Trey's search. But Trey reprimanded her not to say such things. He said that not having

knowledge does not mean that one's stupid. Besides, Cinque complemented him in other areas

such as her superhuman strength. Cinque said that somehow doesn't sound like a compliment.

When they finally met Zhuyu, Trey asked him if the lCie move only so that people will

continue fighting. Qunmi has begun the war with her crystal jammer. Nimbus attacked Class

Zero and in turn Zhuyu attacked back. Andoria died so that her people have the will to fight.

Trey then demanded to know why to which Zhuyu gave nothing more than a statement of how

lCie only follow the crystal's will. As Trey turned to leave, saying that Zhuyu have lost all his

heart and cannot help them at all, Cinque stopped him. She turned to Zhuyu and said that since

Zhuyu is still wearing his uniform, there's a part of him that wants to remember that he was

    once human.

  • Cinque: So, what is it Zhuyucchi? Why won't you answer the question? Just because you're

lCie, does it not matter to you what we humans become?

    Zhuyu: ......

Cinque: That's not true isn't it? When you accidentally killed your friends, you were truly bitter

about it weren't you? Even though I can understand it, it's unbearable. If that feeling still lingers,

not matter how little, please answer Trey's question.

After a long silence, Zhuyu finally confirmed Trey's suspicions. It was then that Trey

realized that he couldn't have done it without Cinque and that it was another part of her that

complemented him. Just then, Trey was reminded of another thing that Andoria spoke of. That

if the fires of war continued to grow, the balance will be toppled and the world will be

destroyed. He turned to Zhuyu and asked if he felt that the crystals desire the world's

destruction. Zhuyu denied this saying that the crystals do not wish for destruction but to

temper/forge/train the people. When Zhuyu stopped halfway through his speech, his usually

expressionless face turned rigid as he said that Byakko was re-launching their attacks.

3 hours before that, in the Milites Capital, 12 Helldiver Magitek Armors equipped with

Ultima Bombs are lineup, gearing for attack. Although they were still in the development

process, Qator was to use his l'Cie powers to control them on a simultaneous attack on both

    Suzaku and Sry's capitals.

Back at present time, Celestia was in the company of Sry the dragon l'Cie when news

of Byakko's Magitek Armor came. While Sry stayed behind to try and fends them off, a

dragon was ordered to take Celestia to safety. Hurt by the explosions of the ultima bombs,

Sry finally fell and the ultima bomb annihilated Mahamayuri.

The reverberation of the explosion in Sry was felt where Trey, Cinque and Zhuyu

were. Caetuna then appeared and she and Zhuyu teleported out of the Mausoleum to try to

fend off the 'grim reapers'. Trey and Cinque rushed out of the Mausoleum.

Zhuyu attacked first, managing to destroy 3 of the Magitek Armors. But each blast from

the destroyed Armor wounded him until he finally crystallized after the 3rd. Caetuna cast her

summoning spell, summoning Ifrit, Shiva, Diablos and Golem. After the destruction of 2 more

Armors, she finally summoned Bahamut. With the blasts also hurting her, she finally crystallized

after the destruction of the last Armor with a smile on her face, knowing that the Peristylium is

    safe.

  • With both l'Cie gone and the ally kingdom destroyed, things weren't looking good for

Suzaku. Sry's people have lost control over their monsters and dragons now that their crystal

got destroyed. Trey explained his research and what Zhuyu told them to the rest of the class.

Fearing that they have to face Nimbus, the class shuddered when Kurasame entered the

classroom with a new battle plan, "The Battle on the Big Bridge". He also told them to absorb

dead bodies' phantoma should the need arise.

As the battle rages on, rain began to fall. Class Zero was divided into pairs sneaking

about destroying enemies. After a number of battles against Colossuses and Snipers, Trey and

Cinque finally encountered Gabriel, already stronger by the powers that Qator, now as lCie,

have. Failing to take Gabriel down, Trey and Cinque were finally knocked out by an explosion.

When they regained consciousness, they found themselves tied in room and found

Machina and Rem there together with them. The 2 explained that their squad was wiped out by

biological weapons deployed by Byakko, the same one which wiped out their town 8 years ago.

Cid Aulstyne soon came to pay them a visit, asking the question to which he so desperately

seeks the answer. Can they truly be revived? Trey confirmed it, knowing lying to be useless.

Satisfied, Cid asked who can revive them to which none of them is willing to implicate Arecia.

Saying that they have as much time as they need, he turned to leave before being stopped by

Trey. Trey asked him why he used the Ultima bombs and virus, and whether he's desperate for

victory. Cid replied saying that his true motive is not the unification of the world and ruling it

but to seal all the crystals and liberate humans of the crystal.

He also told them of the failed union that Byakko attempted with Genbu because

Nimbus wreaked havoc at the treaty signing, initiating the perennial hatred between Byakko

and Genbu. Cinque then commented that Cid's methods are wrong because with war, people

die and these people dont know what happen after the world is liberated of the crystals. Cid

said that it's not up to them to decide if his methods are right or wrong but the war will decide

    it, and left the room.

Trey felt that while he complemented Cinque's with 'knowledge', Cinque complemented

him with 'emotion' and resolved to protect her.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • CHAPTER 8: CATER AND EIGHT

BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES OF LOSS AND MEMORY LAPSE

While Trey and the others were being interrogated by Cid, Eight and Cater were fighting

their own battle against Colonel Faith and his mech, Blackband. After much effort, they

managed to defeat him, but the COMM soon rang with unfortunate news from Kurasame

informing them of Cinque, Trey, Machina and Rem's capture and requested that they return to

    the base camp immediately.

Back at the camp, they find many injured soldiers and candidates with the healer-

specializing Class 4 frantically doing their best to heal all the injured. But among the other

members of Class Zero, the only ones they found to have returned are King and Seven. King told

them that their squad was wiped out as they encountered Nimbus.

Kurasame soon deployed King and Seven to help Nine's group who was surrounded by

enemies and the 2 swiftly moved out. He then turned to Eight and Cater and informed them

that the Commandant has decided that, due to the extremely dangerous task of sneaking into

an enemy territory so close to Ingram, he has only permitted 2 members of Class Zero to be

deployed in the mission. Nevertheless, they are determined to save their friends.

Just then, Celestia came and offered them a ride on her dragons, saying that even

without the Sry Crystal, the dragons which have received her kindness continued to stay loyal

to her. She, however, can only provide them with a one-way trip. Kurasame would meet them

at a rendezvous point with chocobos for their return trip.

Eight, in a brief conversation with Cater, questioned his choice of whether he should've

picked up a stronger weapon. He asked Cater if she thinks he's strange. Cater replied that even

if it's strange, it suits him. He was then reminded of his childhood when Cater was the first to

greet him in a friendly manner, he who put up his guard around everyone at first.

As night fell and they were about to set off on their mission, they were approached by 3

Class 2 students, Asato, Hiruhata and Yano. They were infected with the biological weapon

which Byakko used and their condition was incurable. The 3 volunteered to join them in their

mission to make good use of their time left.

Cater, Celestia and Eight got on one dragon and the other 3 on another. On their

journey, Cater asked why Celestia chose to continue fighting when she could've settled down

and lived a quiet life instead now that Sry's destroyed. Celestia told them that she'd lost

everything; all that's left of her is her calling, will, fate as a military officer. Celestia in turn asked

them what they were fighting for, to which Eight replied that it's for their friends.

  • As they alighted, the 3 students of Class 2 gave up their lives to summon 3 Bahamuts,

(Summoning cost one his/her life, unless you're l'Cie) and the Bahamuts and Celestia continued

on to attack Ingram. Soon after, memories of the 4 disappeared from Eight and Cater's minds.

Eight soon brought back the subject of his choice of fighting with his fists. It was then

that Cater realized that this was his statement of rebellion against the rule of the world where

one has to forget the memories of the dead. That Eight had wanted to remember the pain that

his enemies endured while being killed by him. Still, Cater reprimanded him that this was not

the time to despair about the rule of this world but the time to fight and win the war.

Their tracks were unfortunately stopped by Blackband and a number of snipers who

anticipated their arrival. While Cater took care of the snipers on the rooftop, Eight challenged

Blackband and finally beat him. Colonel Faith's last words were that he died trying to fulfill what

he thought must be the wishes of his fallen underlings; to win the war. He added that Class Zero

who can be revived anytime would never understand the feelings of those who fight because

they're scared of losing those important to them. As he died, Cater and Eight moved on,

without memories of the dead man before them.

As they entered the concentration camp, they found Cinque and Rem in one of the

rooms. The tearful girls told them that the enemies took Trey and Machina for interrogation

after Trey and Machina adamantly tried to protect Cinque and Rem by saying that the girls

know nothing. They untied Cinque and Rem and set out to search for Trey and Machina, whom

they found in the last room, drenched in blood. It was too late to save Trey, but Machina,

    though severely weakened, was alive.

Up until now, Eight have disdained Machina, feeling that Machina and Rem who cannot

be revived are different from the rest of them and hence cannot be relied on. But seeing

Machina stake his life to protect Arecia, he uncovered a newfound respect for him.

He carried Machina while Cinque carried Trey's body and they made it out of the

concentration camp. On the way to the rendezvous point however, they found that they were

followed by the flying armors. Eight made a COMM message to Kurasame informing him of that

and asking him to change the point of contact. Kurasame, after a strange interruption, decided

to stick to the original plan.

With a herd of flying armors at their heels, they finally met up with Kurasame who

summoned Shiva. They watched in shock and horror as Shiva took care of the enemies. But as

they stared at Kurasame, the eyes peeking out of his mask were glowing red...

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • CHAPTER 9: KING AND SEVEN

    THE ABILITY TO INHERIT

Back at the base camp, Seven and King who have successfully returned with Nine and

Sice were waiting anxiously for Eight's team to return from their rescue mission. Ace, Queen,

Jack and Deuce have also returned and joined in the wait.

When they finally returned, Kurasame's actions aroused suspicion among those who

were waiting at the base camp until Eight leaked the news that Kurasame is now lCie. Leaving

the baffled group to rest, Kurasame headed back for the Peristylium to report the news.

The birth of a new l'Cie was great news for the Suzaku Parliament, but Kurasame alone

does not mean they have turned the tables since Byakko still have both Nimbus and Qator.

Kurasame proposed the use of the Ancient Eidolon, saying that it was their only chance.

Furthermore, the crystal has willed the use of the Ancient Eidolon and that became his focus.

But the summoning of said Eidolon requires great sacrifice; the soul of 1000 candidates.

The news soon travelled fast about the decision to summon the Ancient Eidolon and

they even reached Class Zero before they reached the Peristylium. Upon arrival, a COMM

message from Kurasame entered asking them to come for a final briefing at the Class Zero

    classroom.

He explained that they would have to lure the enemies to Rubrum area beyond McTighe

City where thousands of them will be obliterated at one go. He himself will perform the spell on

the terrace of the Peristylium. Left without a commander, Kurasame appointed King and Seven

as the new commanders of Class Zero. He explained that to be commander, one needs to be

able to analyze situations and make prompt decisions calmly, something which Queen is noted

to be lacking in when she asked if she can't take up the position instead.

As the class discussed Kurasame's decision afterwards, they observed that being lCie

seemed to be Kurasame's wish, since he would soon be unable to stand in the battlefield

    anymore with his deteriorating body.

Reminiscing the past, Seven recalled how she and King were the first ones to come

under Arecia's care. One by one the others came and King and Seven took part in taking care of

the younger members of Class Zero.

After half a month of preparation and luring, the day before the summoning finally

came. Qator caught wind of the plans for the summoning of the Ancient Eidolon and that the

  • process itself would take about 6 hours. If they turned back, the chance to get so close to the

capital might never come again, so he decided to break into McTighe City within the 6 hours as

they felt that Suzaku would not sacrifice the 150,000 people living within McTighe.

The next day, they fought bravely for 5 hours until their strength diminishes when Seven

and King called the rest back and stepped into battle themselves. After more battles, they

encountered Gabriel. Seven and King soon ordered the troop to pull back into McTighe and

counter-attack there. As they entered McTighe, they regrouped with the other members of

    Class Zero.

But a surprise awaited Qator; McTighe City was devoid of any signs of life. The 150,000

civilians inhabiting McTighe have been evacuated. Horrified, Qator ordered his troops to

retreat, but it was too late. Just then, a COMM message entered notifying Class Zero that the

Ancient Eidolon will be upon them soon.

As they rushed to escape from McTighe on chocobos, 13 Knights descended from the

sky, destroying everything in their paths. Some use swords, some with magic. Soon, the earth

was smeared red; the color of fire; the color of Byakko soldiers' blood; the color of Suzakus

    flag.

The 14 members of Class Zero rushed amidst the chaos to the terrace of the Peristylium

where they greeted Kurasame for the final time. Kurasame told them that this was his choice

and that they too should pick their own paths and live out their lives with all their strength. As

    he crystallizes, grief overcame them.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    CHAPTER 10: MACHINA AND REM

    WHEN THE ILLUSION ENDS

The Knights of the Round Ancient Eidolon summoned by l'Cie Kurasame raged for about

30 minutes, bringing about massive damage on the Byakko Army. The death count was

recorded as 238, 521 fatalities. Byakko's Type-B l'Cie Qator miraculously escaped and returned

to Ingram, but their Type-LCie, Nimbus, lasted 19 minutes against the summon before being

stabbed by a sword of a Knight. Taking advantage of the situation, Suzaku launched an all-out

offensive attack on Byakko, cutting their way to the Byakko Capital of Ingram.

4 months after the summoning, Class Zero was idly passing time in their classroom (a

scene similar to Ace's dream in the ending). Ace was sleeping. Queen was reading. Eight was

  • erasing the blackboard. Seven was trying in vain to reject a few underclassmen's request. Cater,

Deuce and Cinque gossiping. Sice was trying to stop Trey's long winded explanations. King

taking no heed of them yawned and Jack smiled as he looked out of the window, saying that it

was a nice weather. Suddenly, Nine burst into the room, looking as though he was trying to

escape from something. It turned out that he was being followed by a Tonberry which he had

helped on a mission the previous day. Machina suggested that the class keep it as a pet, to

which all the girls immediately approved. Queen remarked that the Tonberry's presence

    reminded her or Kurasame.

The conversation soon drifted into the topic of the closing final battle. Machina

remarked that he was glad he didn't bring down or become a hindrance to the class in any way.

But the whole class all refuted this, saying that Rem and Machina have helped them so much

that they couldn't possibly be a hindrance. Machina and Rem gratefully smiled at the praises.

At that moment, Carla came in looking for Machina, saying she wished to talk to

Machina (she was in Machina's previous Class 2). As Machina left with Carla, Rem got worried

and rushed off after Machina. She found them in the library, and after Carla left, Rem

approached Machina. Machina explained that he had asked Carla to help him find information

regarding Finis. Rem asked why he wants to research on that, to which Machina said that

Arecia's words about Finis has been bothering him. Arecia had told him that he weakens Class

Zero and that he will understand when Finis comes.

They found the verse "When time greets 9 and 9 with 9............" and tried to come up

with possible explanations for 9. A theory stated that it referred to the year 999, but Machina

felt that prefers the theory that 9 is a number denoting the end of something. Rem and

Machina then said that maybe it denotes a time when people were annihilated due to the war

continuing on and on. Then the verse "Caught within a spiral", they made it out to mean that

for the past 1000 years, Orience has always been engulfed in war. And the verse "the world

awaits Agito" they felt that it might mean that they Agito Candidates were the ones who should

end the war. Machina then mentioned another thing that Arecia said which bothers him that

the 12 members of Class Zero were brought up for the purpose of the "Battle that is to come".

The 2 then came up with the idea that even when the war ends, there are still lots of problems

yet to be solved, such as food, and that Arecia probably was referring to those problems.

3 days later came the command to set off for Ingram. As they were about to depart,

Arecia greeted them. After words of encouragement between the 12 and Arecia, she finally

turned to Machina and said "In the end, you came together until the final moment." but

Machina thanked her instead, saying that it was thanks to her who revived Class Zero again and

again that they can stay together until the end. Arecia replied that she did what she had to.

  • Machina replied back saying that he will too, together with her children, to which Arecia said to

take care of them. And they set off.

Half a month later, beyond the boundaries of Ingram, the 14 members of Class Zero sat

surrounding a bonfire and talked. They contemplated how far they've come and grown.

Machina and Rem both knew that Ace who used to say "cut off the past to move forward"

would sometimes visit Izana's grave alone. But both Machina and Rem realized this even

though Ace didn't know that they knew. Queen was so grieved at Kurasame's crystallization

that she admitted to Rem that she felt that she has grown weaker. Rem, however, felt that she

have grown more humane. It was then that Rem asked them what their ambitions were.

The flashback goes to the time before the final battle with Byakko and they are having a

meal around a bonfire when Rem asked them what they wanted to do once the war is over.

Nine said they should go back to Suzaku and report their victory to Mother and the

officials and then Rem corrected him and asked what they want to do after that. And....Trey

replied that they would continue studying as candidates, take exams and graduate....

Rem got impatient and asked what they wanted to do after graduating. They hesitated

at first, realizing that they can't forever stay in Class Zero as candidates.

Until at last Ace said that he wants to own a chocobo ranch. Not as war supplies or tools

but he wants chocobos to be raised as humans' friends.

Deuce then remarked bashfully then she wanted to be a musician.

Jack wanted to be a travelling comedian.

Cinque simply wanted to be an adventurer. To which Trey said that experience is vital

    for one's growth and development.

Trey then said that he wanted to be a scholar saying that that's his calling.

Queen agreed on his opinion about learning but said she'd rather teach. She then said

that she doesn't want to teach about fighting and war and quoted Deuce's line from the secret

ending. About the great people of the past, why flowers bloom, etc.

Cater said that she wanted to remain as a candidate since she didn't get to enjoy life as

one during the war. Playing, talking and experiencing love... To which all the boys stared in

    shock at her.

  • Eight then asked if she's actually thinking of love and she simply replied "is that a bad

thing?" Eight then said that he wants to be a martial artist, the competitive kind and not for

    war.

Seven said she wants to build an orphanage. With many children orphaned during the

war, she wanted to do the same for them as Mother did for Class Zero before. She asked if Sice

is interested in a joint venture.

But Sice remarked that it doesn't suit her even though she felt that it's an important

thing to do. She said she wanted to be a chef!! Because when Arecia brought her in, she gave

her a soup which she said she will never forget. Nine laughed at this and Sice said that Nine will

be her poison taster until she got good at it.

She then asked Nine what he wanted to do but Nine can't make up his mind and asked

Machina and Rem what would suit him. Machina said 'farmer'. XD saying that being a farmer

needs strength and since Orience may face food shortage after the war, it's meaningful.

King said he'd like to be a policeman.

    Machina wants to rebuild Orience.

Rem wanted to do the same thing as Machina but was too shy to admit it and said that she'll

start thinking from now on. Ace said that she has plenty of time to think.

That night, Rem and Machina who couldn't sleep talked outside their tents. They

remarked that everyone has changed. Machina admitted that at first, he was scared of Class

Zero who were raised as weapons, even when Ace admitted about being his brother's cause of

death, even though he said that he forgives him; he still found it disturbing in some ways. He

felt that Ace and the others who can be revived may not understand the value of life. But he

changed his mind when they talked on the night at the abandoned house, that the 12 members

of Class Zero were in fact not taught the importance of their own life. That's why, Machina

resolved to do all that he can to help them that this was now his main reason for fighting.

The next day, the classes were divided into 4 teams, 3 to destroy 3 crystal jammers on 3

different sides of the government building and 1 involving Machina, Rem (who are affected by

jammers) and Ace to cut through into the building the moment the jammers are destroyed.

One by one, the jammers are destroyed and Ace, Machina and Rem set off for the

government building. Ace saying along the way that he, who is brought up as a weapon, wants

to continue fighting so that people who cannot be revived wouldn't have to fight. Machina

  • countered this by saying that his reason to fight is also so that there wouldn't be people who

are used as weapons for the sake of war.

Beyond the fence, they encountered Qator on his mech Gabriel. Being Cid's last line of

defense, they were to defeat him. Becoming much stronger as l'Cie, Qator did not go down as

easily as he did. With the help of the other 3 teams who finally came, they finally defeated

Qator. After his mech was damaged, Qator got out of his mech and attacked with a saber.

Losing, Machina was about to stab him when Rem stopped him, saying that there was no need

for that since they have reached their goal anyway.

Inside the building, they came face to face with Cid Aulstyne. Cid told them that their

talk about creating a peaceful world is empty because the Death Memory Lapse made it

impossible for people to learn from the past. Then Rem made a shocking statement. If the

crystals are the root of evil, they will destroy them. Satisfied, Cid felt that his ambitions will be

achieved even if they were to be the ones who claim victory; he pulled the trigger, taking his

    own life.

But soon after, voices rang in their head, chanting the verse. "When time greets 9 and 9

with 9, in the depths of consciousness, something pulses. And when the first seal is broken, a

voice of thunder resounds. Saying we are upon you." (I based this on my memory of another

translator's translation of this verse, may be inaccurate but roughly, it's like this). Rem felt

something eating her heart, taking over her conscience and shouted for help. But Rem lost

control of her body and stepped near the window, turning the skies red and thunder resounds,

and from her own lips she said "We are upon you..."

    CHAPTER 11: ARECIA

    AGITO

13 Lulusath Warriors appeared before Rem who has become a Judge. Having lost herself

completely, Rem ordered the Lulusaths to attack Class Zero. Seeing their attacks have no effect

on the Lulusaths, Class Zero decided to retreat first after convincing a reluctant Machina.

Outside the Milites Government Building, King tried contacting Suzaku to which Naghi

gave him the information, that the whole world is facing the same crisis. Worried, they

contacted Arecia, only to hear her say her farewells to them. That they can no longer meet her

and nor can she help them anymore.

  • Then it dawned on Machina that this is the Finis that he had researched on. That each 9

in the verse refers to the end of a country. First, Genbu, then Sry and at last Byakko. It was

then that Qator joined in their discussion, telling them that it was for Finis that the world is

thrown into an endless spiral of war, to mold the people and prepare them for the end. He also

said that the reason that Rem was chosen as the Judge was probably because she has a strong

heart and that she desired to see an end to the war more than anyone else.

Deciding that they might have no choice but to become Agito by means of felling the

Judge, they decided to go to the Temple of Thousand Magic, first convincing themselves that

they are not felling Rem but releasing her. Qator offered to take them there on Gabriel since

the Temple is up in the sky. After finishing his task, Qator crystallizes.

Amused at their ability to come so far as the Temple, Rem sent the Lulusaths at them.

The first they felled, Machina drew Phantoma from it. But the next 4 they brought down were

revived before their eyes. A stunned Machina stood rooted to the spot as a Lulusath swung its

    huge sword at him.

    Blood splattered everywhere.

But it was not Machina's blood but Queen who had rushed forward to shield him at the

last moment. Rem reminded them that they had come to the Temple independent of Arecia,

hence the impossibility of a revival. It took some time before Machina finally realized that the

first Lulusath they felled wasn't revived because Machina had drawn its Phantoma. After a long

harsh battle in a circle surrounding Queen, protecting her, the Lulusaths finally lay still.

As Queen died, the rest of the class crowded around her. She said that she was scared of

dying and disappearing from everyone's memories. Ace held her hand and Nine tried to

encourage her and the girls all cried. As the last of Queen's memories disappeared, they only

knew that the corpse of the girl in front of them was their comrade.

The path to the Judge was clear, but everyone was severely weakened from the battle.

It took only a fierce bolt of thunder magic from Rem to bring down everyone but Ace and

Machina. Ace, knowing that he can't hold out much longer, told Machina to absorb all of their

Phantomas. The Phantomas would give him enough power to defeat Rem. Reluctant as he was

at first, Machina had no choice. As Ace dies, fulfilling Ace's request, he drew their Phantomas

before the last of his memories of Ace and their conversation disappeared.

With the strong souls of all 12 members of Class Zero blending into one with his,

Machina could hear voices of encouragement within him although he could not recall whose

voices were those. As he faced Rem, he could hear her true voice, begging him to stop her.

  • Using Rem's most powerful magic, Holy, the combined magic powers of Class Zero and himself

was able to bring down the Judge.

Rem, back to her true self, told him that she was glad that they were together in her last

    moments, before finally dying.

Left alone, Machina lamented over why things have turned out this way. He was angry

at himself, feeling that if only he was stronger, he would have been able to protect everyone he

cared about. If only he had the powers of lCie....

"In the end, we reached this conclusion...."

Arecia appeared before him. Not caring why or how she got there, Machina was at least

glad that Arecia was there. With no strength left to speak, Arecia read Machina's mind in a

conversation with him. Arecia told him the truth about the world, being rewound again and

again and that it always came down to being destroyed as Finis came. Even so, the people

change little by little. Even if they have their memories erased, their souls remember. And again

she told him that he weakens her children. At last, she asked him if he desired the rewinding of

this world again. Machina spoke up at last, saying that he wished for it and this time, he will not

    lose those important to him.

Arecia told him to rest until the time comes.

EPILOGUE: THE 12 MEMBERS OF CLASS ZERO

THE SECOND TRUTH FROM THE FINALE

Arecia stood silently facing the 14 dead bodies. In the end, this time, the Agito wasn't

born either. She contemplated the world, her machinery, with its entire people as its

cogwheels, existing to mold whoever becomes Agito. Arecia, who isn't human, never

understood people's hearts. And neither would she meddle with the flow of history. Bringing up

Class Zero is her only intervention.

But the bond formed between Machina and Rem and Class Zero, she felt, would weaken

her children. Over the course of events of this cycle, Machina has developed a thirst for power,

a fear of loss. Those feelings would surely be etched onto his soul. So that Machina would

  • distance himself from Class Zero, Arecia would have to make someone close to him weak. And

that would have to be none other than Rem. So she drew their Phantomas, and rewound time.

    -----

In the distant past, people of Orience had no powers at all. No magic, no machinery, no

ability to talk to beasts, and had weak bodies. Then one day, they discovered the 4 crystals.

Receiving the crystals' blessings allows them to wield powers, but it also marked the start of the

    thousand year war.

Then the final war came. As Byakko l'Cie Qun'mi attacked Suzaku with her crystal

jammer, a lone youth bet his life on passing a COMM system to Class Zero's Ace. His actions

subsequently led to Class Zero's victory over Qun'mi and her Jammer, as well as Suzaku being

    saved from destruction.

The people, completely ignorant about repeating the events of the previous cycle,

replayed history. They would once again replay their chance meeting when Machina and Rem

    enters Class Zero.

    -----

Machina stood in the Peristylium's graveyard, looking forlornly at his brother's grave.

Rem came calling out to him. Machina admitted to her that there's something bothering him

about his brother's death. But Rem told him that they'd be late if they don't hurry.

From outside the classroom, voices of anger and dispute can be heard.

"We won't take orders from anyone else other than Mother y'know? No one called you here!"

Machina and Rem glanced nervously at one another as the voices and some sort of blast

sounded from within the classroom. At last, Kurasame's voice sounded from within, ordering

    them to enter.

    Thus, the world was rewound.

The cogwheels have once again met. The doors to a new fate have opened.

This was the last story beyond the continuing spiral.

Facing the future transcending the end, they set off once more.

  • THE END
