The Outdoor School By: Ethan

On Tuesday April 10, the fifth grade embarked on a thrilling adventure to the outdoor school. After an hour and thirty minutes of driving, we finally arrived at our destination in Marble Falls. The buses were filled with the screaming of all the anxious boys and girls ready to start the fun. The first impression of the camp was awesome, and the second impres-sion was even better. We were sleeping in cabins on a lake! So cool!

The first the thing we learned about was universal respect. Basically, universal respect means: respect yourself, others, teachers, nature, and counselors. In our free time, a new game was discovered. “Ga Ga” ball became the hit activity in free time. It’s like soccer, but you use your hands. If the ball hits you below your knees, you’re out.

4th graders, prepare yourselves for the totally awesome experience of the OUTDOOR SCHOOL. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, we also learned about science.

It’s Almost Over!

By: Ethan

The last day of school, on May, 25, is closing in. In five weeks we will all be playing outside and enjoying ourselves. School will be OVER. For all of us 5th graders, it won’t just be another year over, it will be a time of change, the last day of elementary school. We will move on up to WALSH and become a Wild-cat, instead of a Star Texan. Al-though it might sound weird, I don’t want school to end. I’d be leaving the only school I’d ever been to. It’s definitely going to be a big change, so 4th graders, pre-pare yourselves for the challenging experience of moving on up.

Steam is a digital download service that lets you download PC versions of games. Most of the games you have to buy, but it’s worth it. Let’s say that you can’t find the PC versions of Portal (Valve, 2007) and Portal 2 (Valve, 2011) in store. No problem for Steam. Just search the game on the Steam Store, buy the game, and let the game download and BAM! You have the PC version of both games, ready to play whenever you want. There are many dif-ferent games on Steam, some free to play. So if you have finished all of your video games, look on Steam. You may find your new favorite game!

Did you know these so called ‘Mosquito Eaters’ do not ac-tually eat mosquitos? They eat decaying plants but will eat mosquito larvae. They are also called mayflyers and come with wet weather. May-flyers only live a couple weeks and are in the family of Tipuladae. Some of these species are aquatic, but none of them bite humans. These insects can do damage to plants by eating them. Some people think they are huge mosquito’s, but they just just look like them. Now you know the truth.

cation Book Summary by

Elizabeth Written By Mark Walden

H.I.V.E. is a fast paced adventurous book that was introduced to me by a friend of mine named August. It is about a boy named Otto who woke up on a plane with a splitting headache and an Asian boy named Wing. They have to stay at the in-stitute for 6 years and are not allowed to have contact with the outside world. Otto will try the impossible: Escaping! With help from his new friends will he be able to do it? That is for you to find out, because honestly I don’t know yet. There are 7 books in this series and I expect them all to be amazing!

Congratulations to Brooke Butler for winning the 2012 Youth Volunteer of the Year for Old Town Ele-mentary! She volunteered for things like Peer Media-tion, Peer Mediation Read-ing, Old Town Times, Choir and more stuff like that. She will be missing a couple hours of school to attend the awards presentation program. She will eat a breakfast, and receive a token of their gratitude, and attend the awards ceremony.

Check out what the first grad-ers did on their free art day! They also measured their creation using a pair of scis-sors

Smells Like Dog By: Katelynn

OK, I know that there are a ton of awesome books out there, but this book is BEYOND the best. Smells Like Dog was written by an amazing author named Suzane Selfors. I have read this book and recommend it to 3rd graders and up .This book is about a boy [Homer Pudding] who is given 2 things, a Basset Hound with no sence of smell, and the mystery of how his uncle died. If this book does not sound interesting, then there are 2 other books called To Catch a Mermaid and For-tunes Magic Farm. No matter what book you read, HAPPY READING!!!!!!!

Harry Potter Jokes

Chapter 4

I have been avoiding James. He looks at me with a concerned face. I smile like everything is O.K, but it is not. My wound is healing slowly, so I cannot walk yet. I am stuck. Trapped, perhaps. Trapped inside a nightmare, where each direction is wrong.

“Beaux, I feel like you are avoiding me.” James said softly. I smile. “No, stop smiling and talk.” Darn, he ratted me out.

“Well, I just do not want to talk right now, and you have no reason to tell me what I should or will do.” I shoot back defensively. The tears are brimming over my eyes. I hate that he acts like my boss, but is that a good reason? Hate is a strong word and may not be the right definition for my feelings. “GET OUT!” I scream. I had figured out my feelings. It is not hate or anger. It is love.

Hunting in Rechester Chapter 3

By: Peyton

The searing pain paralyzes me. My eyes are wide with fear, so wide I can barely see the soft brown eyes staring at me. The bearer of the brown eyes had a face with a gentle smile and handsome features. Soon, I feel a shift and I am lifted off the ground.

When I wake up, rough bandages cover my ribs. The boy is telling me that my injuries are not lethal, but I am not going to be able to move for a couple of days. He keeps me company over the days. I learn that his name is James and he lives at ‘The Coin’, a wealthy neighborhood. He is very intelligent and has a huge heart.

James starts to explain why l got shot. He tells me my dad discov-ered somewhere before the U.S, and got lost there. Tarnation dad, what did you get yourself in to? I ponder around the thought. A burn-ing sensation rises in my chest. I secretly hate James for what he has just told me.

Chapter 5

Feelings are a strange thing. So is love. It teeters back and forth from true happiness to insanity. It can leave you screaming or day dreaming. It is an awful thing.

I express my feelings to James by throwing vases at him. When he leaves, I congratulate myself. It is a very good expression strategy. He is clearly mad at me.

James. Such a sweet, innocent name. It fits him so well. James… “Beaux, snap out of it,” I tell myself. He walks in , smiling like nothing has ever hap-pened. Oh, how confusing feelings are.

Susan Symes Project

BY: Ekaterina

This is to honor Susan Symes, a teacher who taught 5th grade at Old Town, loved reading, and tragically died. To enter you have to read any 20

books (which you probably already have) and write a 3 to4 sentence summary for each book .

You can only do this if you are a 5th grader!!!!! Then choose one book, and then do a very crea-tive project on the book. Here are some exam-

ples, Powerpoint

Photostory Model out of clay Display a model of the setting of the book Find something special in the book and do a

The 4th graders were going to the Alamo this march 30th, 2012, but it got canceled be-cause one of the buses was running late, and there was a wreck on the highway. That was really disappointing to one of my friends. She almost cried when she heard and it

was also disappointing to me to. How would you feel if your big field trip got canceled? I would be sad, wouldn’t you? I hope the field trip is fun when we go again!! Luckily the field trip got re-scheduled to April 30th!!!!

Photo Stories By: Wesley

In 5th Grade wrote autobiographies in writing class. Teachers are allowing us to use windows Photo Story 3 to publish . 4th graders listen up. It Is an awesome project. You have to make sure that you

bring in pictures of the defining moments of your life. Be sure to use plenty of nar-rative voice and you’re good to go! Show-ing the Photo Story was a little embar-

rassing, but it was worth it.

Empty Bowls Festival Review By: Brooke Butler

The Empty Bowls Festival was a big HIT!!! In fact, Mrs. Westfall’s bowl was entered in the silent auction and sold for $100! We beat last year’s total which was $10,221! Also, the RR Serving Center said the real victory was the increase of participating students. The RR Serving received the money, and used it to serve meals for people who can’t afford it. I hope this rate continues year after year. The fourth grad-ers who’ve participated have made a huge impact on hunger.

By: Kylie Have you heard of the new game on Coolmath.com called Farafalla? It is a very addicting game. WARNING: Once you start this game, it's going to be very hard to stop (this warning is from the actual Cool math website). All you have to do is collect balloons to get through the colored walls and save the little purple guy’s girlfriend at the end of the level. The game is one big level and does not re-member your progress. You have to literally have to learn and memorize the game. Have fun playing Farafalla!

On Friday, the 4th grade recess soccer game, the Fence team (shooting at the fence) brought their best. They started off by punting the ball. Then, the Play-ground team (shooting at the play-ground/forest) brought the ball back and tried to score, but the ball was blocked. Liam dribbled down the field and shot the ball,

but Adrian saved it. He made an amazing punt down the field. Ca-den kicked it back and Calum acci-dently kicked the ball over the fence. Mrs. Mustain came and got the ball for the players. When she punted it, the Fence team kicked it out of bounds. The playground team threw it in, but Liam got the ball, shot it, and Tomas missed

the save. Tomas then punted the ball back into play, and Conner got down the field and scored. Caden then punted it, and Calum got the ball, passed to Liam, who passed back to Calum and scored. In the end, the Fence team won by 2-1.
