This project serves as a gathering place for people every-

where to discuss and solve the problem of human traffick-

ing. It focuses on creating a warm and comfortable work-

ing environment, achieved by the choice of materials that

inherently relate to the human senses; light, wood, lime-

stone, water and greenery, and a strong building structure

achieved by teh choice of Cross Laminated Building Con-

struction that evoke feelings of strenght and safety.

Human resilience is a three parts process that usually starts with the preparation for a tragedy, followed by the act of going through the tragedy itself, and ending with rehabilitation. As Human Resilience is in three folds, so is the design of this project.

This building is first broken up into three sections, with a central vertical relationship amongst the victims private reflection space in the basement, the exhibition space on the ground floor, and the auditorium on the second and third floor which is spatially the heart of our design.

The structure of the building makes use of the building’s three bars. It is composed of Cross Laminated Timber framing that not only is used to sequester carbon emissions, but also is a prevalent symbol of strength and warmth in this design.

The structure serves as a cradle for supporting the auditorium. The wings of the auditorium are load bearing walls. Named after the auditorium, “The Ribbon” has been designed to be a gathering space with the auditorium itself its primary symbol of Resilience.

As the object in space, the auditorium is seen through both the exte-rior and the interior spaces of the building. On the interior, it is a float-ing wood structure where people of all walks of life come together to discuss different ways to combat human trafficking, and from the exterior, it is a wooden ribbon that holds the forum of change.

The landscape waterfall allows for natural light to reach the basement’s private reflection space where the victims find

refuge, and help tie the building to its surrounding by connecting the public entrance from Michigan Avenue to the private

entrance from the Catholic University of America campus.

In this project, the objective was to create an open space best

suited for people to read and contemplate. It was necessary

to create a sequence of inhabitable spaces within a natural

environment that evoke feelings of comfort and relief.

Additionally, a sense of discovery that stimulates the brain and

evoke senses of excitement for learning and discovery was the

main drive for the site.

Water is a great source of tranquility. With the canopy, it becomes the main point of attraction where a sense of tranquility and discovery take place.

The space designed for this purpose was intended to inte-grate the natural environment using light and wind.

It serves as a shelter similar to a tree’s canopy that allows peo-ple to enjoy their surroundings.

The canopy then becomes an object in space for people to contemplate and use freely to read, dream and contem-plate.

Imitating the lighting that comes from tree canopies, a space to read is meant to freely connect people to nature, the most desirable place to read.

Dc brau is a museum designed to attract and celebrate the

lifestyle of its visitors. To create dc brau, the emphasis was to

celebrate the consumption of beer and its fabrication.

With that in mind, dc brau becames a place of development

where the hidden fabrication process is revealed and where

the public and the private spaces appear side-by-side, all re-

volving around the fabrication of beer.

The programmatic arrangement mimics the circulation pattern created

With the main space put at the center, and the public and private spaces on each sides, this museum empha-sizes the hierarchy of spaces

The rise of the “L” shape, provides a symbol of the life-style of its visitors while creating an interesting sequence of spaces

A courtyard provides this project with a central space
